| The Nats tried a valiant late-inning comeback, but it was too little too late as the Cubs take the deciding game 5 by a 6-3 score and will go on to face the Rockies in the NLCS. The Cubs got runs in the 1st and 2nd, then put the death blow on the Nats with a 4 run 4th. Ryan Theriot and Geovany Soto both had 2 doubles for the Cubbies, while Aramis Ramirez had 3 hits. Ted Lilly pitched 7 shutout innings before tiring in the 8th. The Nats get 3 runs in the 8th and had the bases loaded when Ryan Langerhans hit a fly ball with a ballpark home run chance...and the ball was caught by Cubs right fielder Matt Murton for the out. The Nats got a double in the 9th from Ryan Zimmerman, but otherwise went down quietly. The Nats starters, who were a liability at times during the season, were the downfall of the team in the series loss. Starters had a 5.14 ERA, while the bullpen had a 1.13 ERA. The team also had a power outage with no home runs in the series, despite a .256 BA which was very similar to their team batting average for the season. Ted Lilly is the series MVP. He went 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA, and struck out 21 in his 16 1/3 innings of work. I forgot to mention the MVP for the Red Sox-Twins series - it is closer Jonathan Papelbon, who saved all 3 Red Sox wins without allowing a single hit. |
