| The Yankees punch their ticket to the ALCS with a 4-1 win over the Angels in game 4. Mike Mussina was on for the Yanks in this one, going 6 2/3 and allowing just 5 hits and 1 run. The Yankees got 11 hits in 6 2/3 off Angels starter John Lackey, and strung together 3 hits and a walk in the first for a run and then 4 hits for 2 runs in the 4th. The Angels would get on the board in the 7th, but could only manage one run and go on to lose. The series MVP is team captain Derek Jeter, who had just 2 RBI in the series but they were on a home run that ended up being the margin of victory for game 3. Jeter had 7 hits and a .389 average for the series. Jeter was one of 5 Yankees with 2 RBI in the series; teammate Alex Rodriguez led the team with 3. The Yankees will await the winner of the Red Sox-Twins series. The Yankees and Red Sox have met twice in the ALCS in one of my replays, with the Yankees losing in 7 in 2001 and in 5 in 2004. The Yankees also lost the ALCS in 2006, losing to the White Sox in 6 games. |
