| Carlos Zambrano does on short rest what he didn't come close to doing in game 1, giving the Cubs a win and in the process tying the series at 2 games a piece. Zambrano didn't even get out of the 1st inning in game 1; this time, he goes 7 2/3, giving up just 1 run. The Nats had runners on 1st and 3rd when Scott Eyre entered the game in relief of Zambrano, but Brian Schneider flies out to end the inning. Jason Bergmann gave up just 3 hits in 7 innings of work for the Nats, but the 2 runs he allowed are enough for the Cubs to get the win. The Nats leave 11 runners on base in the loss. The series returns to Washington for the winner take all game 5, with Matt Chico facing Ted Lilly of the Cubs. Lilly pitched a complete game in the Cubs game 2 win, striking out 13. |

At Wrigley Field, the Chicago (NL) fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Carlos Zambrano(1-1) finally bested his Washington opposite, Jason
Bergmann(0-1), by the score of 2 to 1.
Washington was unable to recover after Chicago (NL) went ahead in the bottom
of the 4th inning scoring a single run. Despite losing, Washington out-hit
Chicago (NL) 8 to 3.
Carlos Marmol recorded his 1st save. Bergmann was the loser. He pitched 7
innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk. 'He gutted it out' Lou Piniella
said of Zambrano. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.'
