| A 16 hit attack for both teams, but it is the Cubs who come out victorious in game 3 of the NLCS. The Cubs did all their scoring in 2 innings, a 5 run 3rd and a 4 run 7th. In the 3rd, the Cubs got 5 hits and a walk to chase Rockies starter Josh Fogg from the game. Aramis Ramirez and Cliff Floyd had back to back doubles in the inning. In the 7th, Floyd hit another RBI double but the big hit was a 3 run homer off the bat of Geovany Soto. That made the score 9-6, but the Rockies weren't done as they got a solo homer from Todd Helton to pull within 2 runs in the 9th. This summoned closer Ryan Dempster, who did little to fan the rally when he allowed a homer to the first batter he faced, Garrett Atkins. Seth Smith would reach base as the tying runner after a pinch hit single, but ultimately the rally falls short and the Cubs get the win. Ted Lilly allowed 10 hits and 6 runs in his 6 innings of work, a far cry from his MVP performance in his 2 NLDS starts. Jason Marquis will get his first start of the playoffs for the Cubs in game 4, and will try to continue the trend of the home team winning every game in the series. Franklin Morales will oppose him and try to break that trend. |
