| October 29, 2007: The Red Sox win their 2nd World Series of my replay era with a 5-1 win over the Rockies in game 5. The Red Sox also won in 2002, beating the Atlanta Braves. The Red Sox join the Houston Astros as two-time replay World Champions. Curt Schilling pitched masterfully, much as he had done in game 1. He pitched 6 shutout innings and only allowed a run after tiring in the 7th. Fortunately, his teammates had already given him a 5 run lead to work with and the 5-1 score would hold thanks to an inning each out of fellow veterans Julian Tavarez and Mike Timlin. The Sox got a big inning in the 2nd off Rockies starter Jeff Francis, scoring 3 runs when Manny Ramirez led off the inning with a double and Mike Lowell singled to score him, followed by a Jason Varitek 2-run home run. The Sox would add a run in the 3rd on a Manny single following a critical error from Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, then would add another in the 5th on back-to-back-to-back singles from Lugo, Pedroia and Youkilis. A lot of gaudy offensive numbers in this series make it hard to pick an MVP. Manny Ramirez hit .333 with a homer and 5 RBI, Jason Varitek was a pleasant surprise at .368 with a homer and 4 RBI, Dustin Pedroia hit .421 and David Ortiz hit an otherworldly .533 with 2 homers and 5 RBI. However, my World Series MVP is Curt Schilling, who turned back the clock with a 1.26 ERA over 2 starts, both wins. In both starts, Schill pitched shutout ball for the most of the game and only gave up a run in the late innings when he was tired and his team had a lead. This is the first time in my replay history that the real world champion has won in my replay as well. This is also the first time that both teams were the same as in real life, meaning the loser also matched for the first time ever. |
