October 29, 2007: The Red Sox win their 2nd World Series of my replay era with a 5-1 win over the Rockies in game 5. The Red Sox also won in 2002, beating the Atlanta Braves. The Red Sox join the Houston Astros as two-time replay World Champions.

Curt Schilling pitched masterfully, much as he had done in game 1. He pitched 6 shutout innings and only allowed a run after tiring in the 7th. Fortunately, his teammates had already given him a 5 run lead to work with and the 5-1 score would hold thanks to an inning each out of fellow veterans Julian Tavarez and Mike Timlin.

The Sox got a big inning in the 2nd off Rockies starter Jeff Francis, scoring 3 runs when Manny Ramirez led off the inning with a double and Mike Lowell singled to score him, followed by a Jason Varitek 2-run home run. The Sox would add a run in the 3rd on a Manny single following a critical error from Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, then would add another in the 5th on back-to-back-to-back singles from Lugo, Pedroia and Youkilis.

A lot of gaudy offensive numbers in this series make it hard to pick an MVP. Manny Ramirez hit .333 with a homer and 5 RBI, Jason Varitek was a pleasant surprise at .368 with a homer and 4 RBI, Dustin Pedroia hit .421 and David Ortiz hit an otherworldly .533 with 2 homers and 5 RBI. However, my World Series MVP is Curt Schilling, who turned back the clock with a 1.26 ERA over 2 starts, both wins. In both starts, Schill pitched shutout ball for the most of the game and only gave up a run in the late innings when he was tired and his team had a lead.

This is the first time in my replay history that the real world champion has won in my replay as well. This is also the first time that both teams were the same as in real life, meaning the loser also matched for the first time ever.

The Boston Red Sox toppled the Colorado Rockies by a 5 to 1 score at Coors
Field.

Curt Schilling(3-0) had a solid outing for Boston. He went 7 innings
surrendering 6 hits and 4 walks reducing his ERA from 3.21 to 2.57. Boston
rapped out 9 hits for the night.

Jeff Francis(1-2) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hits
and 3 walks.

The Red Sox are one win away from history after a 12-9 win over the Rockies. The Sox made it easy for Jon Lester in this one, scoring 6 runs in the first inning before Lester even took the hill. The first 7 Red Sox batters all reached base (6 singles and a walk) before an out was recorded on a Julio Lugo force play ground out. The next batter was Lester, who laid down a bunt and beat it out for another single! This brought out the hook for Rockies starter Aaron Cook, then the Sox got one more single (from Jacoby Ellsbury, his 2nd of the inning) before Latroy Hawkins retired the next 2 hitters to end the inning. The Sox would lead by 10 runs before the Rockies even got on the board, and Lester would go on to throw 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs.

However, the Rockies weren't done. Kyle Snyder took the hill for the 7th, and the Rockies gave him pretty much the same treatment that the Sox gave Aaron Cook in the first. Snyder gave up a single and 2 walks to load the bases, then a single, fly out, double and single before getting yanked for Javier Lopez. Lopez would give up an RBI double to Todd Helton that enabled the Rockies to pull within 3, but that would be as close as they would get. Jonathan Papelbon gets the save, his 8th of the postseason and his 3rd of this World Series.

The game 1 starters will once again face off in game 5, Jeff Francis vs. Curt Schilling.

Jacoby Ellsbury had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox topped the Colorado
Rockies by a score of 12 to 9 at Coors Field.

Boston took the lead off Aaron Cook in the first inning scoring 6 runners on 8
hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Manny Ramirez who helped
quiet the crowd when he delivered a base-hit plating two runs. Jonathan
Papelbon was perfect in the ninth giving him his 8th save on the season.

The win was credited to Jon Lester(1-0) who went 6 innings allowing 3 runs.
Cook(0-1) was tagged with the loss.

The first ever World Series game in Colorado turns out to be an instant classic for the home crowd, as the Rockies blow a 3 run lead in the 8th only to come back and tie the game, then win it in the 10th.

Daisuke Matsuzaka had another mediocre playoff start for the Sox, lasting just 5 innings while giving up 9 hits and 3 runs. The Sox got 2 runs in the 1st on a Big Papi homer, but the 3 runs given up by Dice-K makes it 3-2 Rockies until the 7th, when the Rockies tack on 2 more runs when Yorvit Torreabla hit a triple off Manny Delcarmen after 2 walks. The Sox took the wind right out of the Rockies' sails in the top of the 8th, when Ortiz contributed a 2nd homer and was followed by a Manny Ramirez single, which brought Matt Herges out of the Rockies bullpen. Hergest walked Lowell, then gave up a 3-run bomb to JD Drew which gave the Sox a 6-5 lead. However, the Rockies tie it right back up in the bottom of the 8th when pinch hitter Willy Tavares led off with a single and was moved to 2nd on a Kaz Matsui bunt. The speedy Tavares scored on a Troy Tulowitzki single.

The Sox go down in order in the 9th, but so do the Rockies. Dustin Pedroia led off the Sox 10th with a single and was replaced at first by Alex Cora on a fielder's choice. Manny walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd, but Mike Lowell grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Rockies led off the 10th with pitcher Manny Corpas, but he singles! That is followed by singles from Matsui and Tulowitzki, and the Sox are in serious trouble with the bases loaded and no outs. I bring in Papelbon from the bullpen and he strikes out Matt Holliday, but Todd Helton drops one into center to score Corpas and send the home fans into a frenzied celebration.

Jon Lester makes his first postseason start for the Red Sox in game 4. He will be opposed by Aaron Cook, who won 13 games for the Rockies during the regular season but hasn't made a start since August.

48,638 fans were treated to a fine game at Coors Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Colorado Rockies won by the
slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.

The score was tied at 6 after nine. Colorado was victorious in the 10th
inning. Manny Corpas stroked a base-hit. Kaz Matsui stepped up next and he
smacked a single. Troy Tulowitzki then delivered a single to load the bases.
Matt Holliday stepped in and he grounded into a double play. Todd Helton
stepped into the box and stroked a one-base hit making Colorado the winners
and sending the 48,638 fans home happy. Colorado ended up with 17 hits for
the game while Boston had 9.

Corpas(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Hideki
Okajima(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. Colorado now has a record
of 8-5. With this loss, Boston has a 7-3 record of late, 9-4 overall.

Another one run win for the Red Sox gives them a 2 games to none lead in the World Series. The Rockies got on the board in the first on doubles from Kaz Matsui and Todd Helton. Not to be outdone, the Sox scored a run in the bottom of the inning on 2 doubles from Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz. The Rockies got another run in the 2nd, this time on a Troy Tulowitzki single, Yorvit Torreabla run advancing ground out, and a Ryan Spilborghs single. The Rockies would only get one inning to enjoy their first lead of the World Series, as the Red Sox got 2 in the bottom of the 3rd and knocked Ubaldo Jimenez out of the game. Jimenez got the first 2 outs of the inning, but then a walk, double, HBP and 2 more walks brought out the hook. The 2 walks (to Mike Lowell and JD Drew) were both with the bases loaded and brought in the two runs.

Josh Beckett and Rockies reliever Taylor Buchholz then got into matching zeros, with only one runner on each side getting as far as 2nd base from the 4th through the 7th. In the 8th, with Beckett still in the game, the Rockies get a leadoff single from Willy Tavares and he is advanced to 2nd on a Kaz Matsui sac bunt. A bit worrisome with the Rockies big hitters due up, but Beckett strikes out both Matt Holliday and Todd Helton and gets out of the inning unscathed. The Sox load the bases with one out in the bottom of the 8th, but pinch hitter Bobby Kielty and Julio Lugo both fail in the clutch off Rockies reliever Jeremy Affeldt.

It comes down to the 9th, and Papelbon again gets the call for the Sox. Garrett Atkins leads off and he singles. Brad Hawpe is next, but he strikes out. Troy Tulowitzki singles, moving Atkins to 2nd. The Rockies pinch hit for Torreabla with Seth Smith, but he pops out to the catcher. It comes down to Ryan Spilborghs with 2 outs, and he grounds to short...but Lugo misplays it and the bases are loaded for Willy Tavares! The Rockies pinch hit with Cory Sullivan, and he hits an X chance ground ball to 2nd...but thankfully Pedroia fields in without issue and the Sox walk off the field with a win!

The series takes a day off before travelling to Colorado. Daisuke Matsuzaka gets the call for the Sox against Josh Fogg of the Rockies. This is the same pitching matchup as the real 2007 game 3.

37,621 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox
topped the Colorado Rockies by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Josh Beckett(5-0) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 8
innings. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

Beckett got relief help from Jonathan Papelbon who gained credit for his 7th
save. Ubaldo Jimenez(1-1) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around
pretty good, giving up 3 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Curt Schilling proves that he's still got a big game or two left in him, pitching shutout ball into the 8th and leading the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Rockies in game 1 of the 2007 World Series. The Sox got a run in the first thanks to a Dustin Pedroia leadoff single, a Kevin Youkilis double, and a Manny Ramirez sac fly. Manny got his 2nd RBI of the game in the 6th on his first home run of the postseason. Schilling got goose eggs on the scoreboard from the Rockies until the 8th, when Troy Tulowitzki led off the inning with a walk, then Ryan Spilborghs and Willy Tavares singled after a strike out. That got a runner in for the Rockies and put the tying runner on 2nd, but Hideki Okajima entered and got both Kaz Matsui and Matt Holliday to ground out. Okajima would also get a ground out from Todd Helton as the first batter of the 9th, then would give way to Jonathan Papelbon who got the final 2 outs for his 6th postseason save.

The Rockies will hope for Ubaldo Jimenez to even up the series in his game 2 start. He will be opposed by Sox ace Josh Beckett, who allowed an uncharacteristic 5 runs in 7 innings in a June start against the Rockies in Fenway in a game that the Red Sox came back to win on a 3-run Mike Lowell home run in the 8th.

Curt Schilling(2-0) and Jeff Francis(1-1) treated the Boston fans to a fine
pitching duel at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox eventually emerged as
victors over the Colorado Rockies by the score of 2 to 1.

Colorado fell behind quickly as the Boston offense came through in the first
inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Dustin Pedroia ripped a base-knock.
Kevin Youkilis came next and he doubled. After another out, Manny Ramirez
stepped in and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. Both teams finished
the game with 5 hits.

Jonathan Papelbon earned his 6th save.

The Boston Red Sox are World Series bound for the fifth time in my 7 years of SOM replays, this time for a replay of the real life world series against the Colorado Rockies. Josh Beckett goes 7 innings for the win, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs and 0 walks while striking out 6. The Yankees briefly held the lead in the 2nd, scoring 2 runs on a Melky Cabrera triple following singles from Hideki Matsui and Robby Cano. Unfortunately for the Yanks, those would be the only 2 runs they would score in the game and the Sox would strike right back with 3 in the bottom of the inning. The Sox loaded the bases thanks to 2 HBP and a walk, then got singles from Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo and a walk from Big Papi to score 3 runs. They got another in the 4th on a Pedroia sac fly, then took a 4 run lead with 2 more runs in the 6th. Javier Lopez and Mike Timlin each contributed an inning of relief to preserve the win.

The ALCS MVP is David Ortiz, who hit .417 and had 3 homers with 6 RBI.

The World Series will start October 24th in Boston. Jeff Francis will get the call for the visitors, while veteran Curt Schilling takes the mound for the Sox. I've also decided to let fantasy imitate reality, replacing Tim Wakefield on the Sox roster with Jon Lester. Wake battled back troubles late in the real 2007 season and only started one game in the postseason, an ALCS start that did not go well. Considering his poor start in game 3 of my ALCS (2 IP, 7 R) I decided to assume that his injury problems extend to my replay and preclude him from playing in the World Series. Lester will start game 4, I'm still undecided whether Dice-K or Beckett will get the call in game 2.

The Rockies also make a roster change, adding Aaron Cook to start game 4, as they did in real life. Cook was injured during the regular season and has not started since August. The Cook-Lester game 4 matchup will be the same as in real life, while the others are mixed up due to changes in my Sox rotation in the earlier series.

The Boston Red Sox cruised to a 7 to 2 victory over the New York (AL) Yankees
at Fenway Park.

Boston tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That scoring would be
all that was needed. Boston finished with 12 hits while New York (AL) ended
up with 6.

Josh Beckett(4-0) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Andy
Pettitte(0-2) was given the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 5
walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

What was a 4-1 lead for the Rockies going into the 7th almost turned disastrous, but then the Colorado lumber company came back to take the game and punch the Rockies ticket to their first ever World Series.

The 7th was when it all happened in this game. The Cubs rallied off a tired Ubaldo Jimenez, getting a triple and a double after an out was recorded. That brought Brian Fuentes out of the bullpen, who got the 2nd out of the inning but also allowed a pinch hit RBI double to Matt Murton and walked 2. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Taylor Buchholz got the call from the bullpen, but Mark Derosa greeted him with a double to score 2 more and give the Cubs a 2 run lead. Geovany Soto was intentionally walked, but Ryan Theriot lined out to end the inning.

Not to be outdone, the Rockies had some tricks of their own to show in the 7th. Jeff Baker led off with a single, his first hit of the postseason. Bob Howry struck out the next 2 batters, but a Troy Tulowitzki single and a Matt Holliday walk would load the bases. This brings Cubs closer Ryan Dempster out of the bullpen to face Todd Helton, and wouldn't you know it Helton puts one over the fence for the grand slam home run to give the Rockies an 8-6 lead! Matt Murton homered for the Cubs in the top of the 8th to pull within a run, but ultimately Cliff Floyd would strike out with runners on 1st and 3rd. In the bottom of the 8th, the Rockies put the death blow on the Cubs when Tulowitzki hit a 3 run home run.

Despite a .309 batting average, pitching was ultimately the downfall of the Cubs in this NLCS, with a 6.14 team ERA. The trio of Howry, Dempster and Wuertz combined for 10 2/3 IP, 24 hits, 18 runs, 5 HR, and 5 BB with 11 K. That's a 15.19 ERA, and that's not going to get you to the World Series.

There are a number of Rockies deserving of series MVP honors, with Garrett Atkins' .500 BA for the series topping Todd Helton's .458 and Matt Holliday's .455. However, you can't deny this is Helton's award when you consider his 3 home runs and 10 RBI in the series, including the grand slam that gave the Rockies the lead for good in this deciding game 6.

The Rockies will get 5 days to head east, with game 1 of the World Series set for October 24th in either Boston or New York. If the Rockies and Red Sox face off, it will be the first time the real life World Series opponents meet in my replay Series. In fact, there only 2 teams (out of 12) that made my replay WS in the same year they played in the real life WS - the 2004 Red Sox and 2005 White Sox. Both teams won in real life but lost in my replay!

Troy Tulowitzki blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Colorado Rockies
defeated the Chicago (NL) Cubs by a score of 12 to 7 at Coors
Field.

Tulowitzki had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the
park in the 1st inning, banged out a single in the 7th inning and lofted a
three-run bomb (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Colorado managed
15 hits in their victory.

The winning pitcher was Taylor Buchholz(2-1) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an
inning. Bob Howry(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an
inning giving up 2 hits and 1 walk.

'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Tulowitzki said.
'Whenever I would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

A Red Sox-Yankee battle for the ages goes to extra innings and ends up as a 6-4 Red Sox win that puts them just one game away from the World Series. That puts both real life 2007 world series combatants up 3-2 in my replay playoffs!

The Sox and Yanks played a cat and mouse game in this one. The Red Sox scored single runs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings, and the Yankees countered with a single run in the bottom of all 3 innings. The Yankees took their first lead of the game in the 7th on a Jason Giambi home run (his 2nd of the game), but the Sox get one right back in the top of the 8th when Mike Lowell goes deep. The Yankees would get a runner on in both the 8th and 9th, but couldn't get past first base. In the 10th, Manny Ramirez leads off with a single. Next up is Lowell, who once again puts one in the seats to give the Sox a 6-4 lead! Lowell picked the right time to get hot, as he had been hitting just .150 for the playoffs before the 2 homers. The Yankees got a leadoff double from Derek Jeter in the bottom of the inning, but Jonathan Papelbon gets the 3 outs after that for his 5th postseason save.

The series returns to Boston for game 6, with the Yanks throwing Andy Pettitte against Sox ace Josh Beckett.

Third baseman Mike Lowell ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red
Sox defeated the New York (AL) Yankees in 10 innings 6 to 4 at Yankee
Stadium.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Finally, Boston pulled the game out in
the 10th inning. Manny Ramirez led off the inning for Boston when he banged
out a single. Lowell stepped up next and he blasted a two-run home run (his
3rd of the season). A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Hideki Okajima(1-0) went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded the save, his 5th. Luis Vizcaino(0-1) took the
loss in relief.

This is the type of game that would make me believe in curses if I were a Cubs fan. Carlos Zambrano pitches 8 shutout innings, but the Rockies score 3 runs in the top of the 9th off the Cubs bullpen and a 2-0 Cubs lead turns into a 3-2 Cubs loss. Here's the ugly details:

Wuertz has been the Cubs de facto closer in the playoffs due to the complete ineffectiveness of Ryan Dempster. Dempster actually looked like he was going to get out of it with 2 strikeouts with the bases loaded, but Ryan Spilborghs comes through with a single to score the tying and winning runs. The Cubs managed just a single in the bottom of the 9th off NL Cy Young award winner Manny Corpas.

The series travels back to Colorado, where Ubaldo Jimenez will try to put the Rockies in the World Series for the first time ever. Rich Hill will try to pull the Cubs even.

In a great finish the Colorado Rockies came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the Chicago (NL) Cubs by a score of 3 to 2 at Wrigley
Field.

Colorado came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs utilizing 2 base hits. Matt Holliday led off and started the rally when
he delivered a base-hit. Todd Helton next to the plate and he drew a walk.
Garrett Atkins then drew a walk to load the bases. Brad Hawpe followed and
he was hit by a pitch knocking in a run. Yorvit Torrealba was next to the
plate, but was promptly struck out. Cory Sullivan was the next batter, but
he struck out. Ryan Spilborghs stepped up next and he stroked a single as
another two runners scored. Colorado had a total of 8 hits for the game.

The victory went to Taylor Buchholz(1-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
Buchholz got relief help from Manny Corpas who gained credit for his 3rd
save. Ryan Dempster(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 1
inning and surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Holliday said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'

The Red Sox score 8 runs for the 2nd straight day, but this time instead of scoring 16 runs the Yankees score just 4 and the Red Sox tie up the ALCS at 2 games a piece. The Yankees took the early lead on a Robby Cano home run in the 2nd, but the Sox took the lead back in the top of the 3rd with 2 runs on 4 hits. The Yankees then hit Schilling for 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, with the big hit being a bases loaded double from Jorge Posada. The Sox got one right back in the top of the 4th when JD Drew went deep, but the 4-3 Yankee lead would hold until the 6th when the Sox struck for 3 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks and an HBP off a tired Mike Mussina. The Sox would hold the 6-4 lead and would actually add 2 more in the 9th when Mariano Rivera entered the game. Kevin Youkilis greeted him with a single, then David Ortiz went deep to make it 8-4. Manny doubled next and Rivera was out of the game. Rivera is having a very atypical postseason - in 6 appearances he has 2 saves, one loss, and has allowed 12 hits and 8 runs in 4 innings. He has allowed 3 hits in all 3 of his appearances in this ALCS.

The teams will take a day off, then resume here at Yankee Stadium with Daisuke Matsuzaka looking for his first postseason start. It will be a rematch of game 1 starters as Chien-Ming Wang takes the hill for the home team.

Right fielder J.D. Drew hit a homerun as the Boston Red Sox topped the New
York (AL) Yankees by a score of 8 to 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Curt Schilling(1-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He surrendered 9
hits and 1 walk in 6 and 2/3 innings. Boston ended up with 13 hits for the
game while New York (AL) had 10.

Mike Mussina(1-1) took the loss. He allowed Boston 6 runs in 5 and 1/3
innings of work.

Not exactly a pitchers duel today in Yankee Stadium for game 3 of the ALCS. The Yankees get 7 runs in the first 3 innings off Tim Wakefield, and essentially coast their way to the 16-8 win. The usually non-clutch Alex Rodriguez was a big part of the offense, knocking in 5 of the first 6 Yankee runs with a 2 run and 3 run home run. Jorge Posada follows the 3 run homer with a solo shot of his own for the 7th run, and that's when Wakefield was mercifully pulled from the game. Julian Tavarez did 3 innings of mop up work, allowing 2 runs of his own, and the rest of the Sox bullpen were also unable to stop the bleeding.

The Sox gave a glimmer of hope in the 6th, when they chased Clemens from the game with 3 straight hits and eventually got a grand slam home run by Kevin Youkilis off Edwar Ramirez to pull within 4 runs. The Yankees would come right back with 2 in the bottom of the inning, then put a 5 spot up in the 8th. The key hit in the 8th was a bases loaded triple off the bat of former Sox Johnny Damon. The 7th was the only inning that the Yankees did not score in.

Curt Schilling makes his first start of the playoffs in game 4 for the Sox. Mike Mussina will take the hill for the Yanks.

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Yankee
Stadium as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 16 to
8.

Rodriguez had a great evening at the plate. He had the crowd cheering his
every move. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 1st inning,
smacked a three-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 3rd inning and
doubled in the 6th inning. New York (AL) provided plenty of action in the
3rd inning with 4 runs on 5 hits and the 8th inning with 5 runs. The New
York (AL) offense man-handled the Boston pitching staff as they scored in 7
of the 9 innings.

The victory went to Roger Clemens(2-0) who went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Tim Wakefield(0-1) suffered the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 2
innings.

It's all evened up in the NLCS as the home team wins again. The Cubs were getting one hit by Rockies starter Franklin Morales through the first 5 innings, but Morales falters in the 6th by allowing 3 straight hits after getting the first out. This brought in Mark Redman, who walked 2 (one intentional) and committed a balk, which brought out Taylor Buchholz to face Matt Murton with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Cubs up by 1. Murton doubles, scoring both runs, and the 4-1 score would hold up to the end. Here's how it happened:

The teams will enjoy an off day before game 5, which will be a battle of aces between Jeff Francis and Carlos Zambrano.
