| The Nationals seem to be stuck on 81 wins, losing their 4th straight game today in extra innings to the Braves. The Braves complete the series sweep and the Nats division lead is now down to 5 1/2 games over the Mets, while the Braves jumped both the Marlins and Phillies to move to third place, 10 games back. The Nats have nothing but division games left on their schedule - 3 @ FLA, then home for 3 vs ATL, 3 vs NYM, 4 vs PHI, then close on the road with 3 in New York and 3 in Philly. This game looked great in the 3rd and 4th, when the Nats combined for 6 runs thanks to big flies from Ryan Zimmerman and Wily Mo Pena. The Braves struck right back with 5 in the 5th on 3 homers, then tied it when Jeff Francouer led off the 6th with a solo shot. The deadlock would hold until the 10th, when the Nats would get 2 walks and then score a run on an Austin Kearns single. With the lead I go to Chad Cordero out of the bullpen, and he gives up a gopher ball to Mark Teixeira, the first batter of the inning. He gets the 3 outs and we go to the 11th, the Nats fail to score, and Cordero coughs up another one to light hitting Willie Harris for the win with 2 out in the inning. In other league news, the Colorado Rockies join the Red Sox as 2007 division champs. The Rockies clinched it with a 5-0 Josh Fogg shutout over the 2nd place Padres. It will be the Rockies' first playoff appearance in 7 years of my SOM replays. The next closest to clinching are the Angels, who have a 9.5 game lead and a magic number of 10. The closest division race is in the AL Central, where the Twins led from early May until 4 days ago, when the Indians caught them and took the lead. The Twins regained it and now have a 1 game lead. |
