| The Nationals close out the season by closing out a series sweep of the Phillies. The Nats struck early for their 5 runs, then squeaked out a win as the Phillies valiantly tried a comeback. The Nats got 4 runs in the 2nd on back to back homers, a 3 run shot off the big bat of Wily Mo Pena followed by a solo shot by Ronnie Belliard. The Phillies scored 2 in the 8th to pull within a run and had the bases loaded in the 9th, but Chris Coste grounded out to end the game. The Nationals will have home field advantage in their NLDS series against the NL Central champion Cubs. The Cubs clinched yesterday by virtue of a tiebreaker with the Brewers, but they didn't even need it since they won today. The Brewers also won to clinch the wild card, although they didn't even need the win since the Mets got beat badly by the Marlins. The Brewers will face the Rockies in the other NLDS series. |

20,574 fans were treated to a fine game at Citizen's Bank Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Washington Nationals won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
Wily Mo Pena had a big day against Philadelphia. He doubled in the 2nd
inning, clubbed a three-run home run (his 12th of the season) in the 3rd
inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 5th inning. Philadelphia threatened
in the 9th but Washington was able to put down the rally.
Jason Bergmann(6-7) allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory.
Jesus Colome got the save, his 2nd. Jamie Moyer(16-13) was given the loss.
He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
