| The Nationals slug their way to a win over the Phillies in their penultimate game of the season. Dmitri Young returned to the Nats lineup with a 3 for 4 day and 2 home runs; Ryan Zimmerman and Wily Mo Pena also contributed longballs. Zimmerman has the Nats team lead in homers with 26, 2 more than he had for the 2007 season in real life. The NL playoff race got a little bit clearer today, as an Astros loss to the Braves eliminated them from playoff contention. The Cubs, Brewers and Mets were all winners, meaning the Cubs retain their one game lead over the Brewers, who retain their one game lead over the Mets in the wild card. However, this situation means that the Cubs have clinched a playoff spot and have in fact clinched the division by virtue of a better head-to-head record than the Brewers. If the Cubs lose and the Brewers win tomorrow, they would tie for the division lead but the Mets would be eliminated. The Cubs, with the better head to head record, would be the division champion and the Brewers the wild card. If the Brewers lose and the Mets win, they would play a one game tiebreaker for the wild card. This also means that the Cubs will be the Nationals' NLDS opponent, with the Brewers or Mets playing the Rockies. |

WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Aaron Rowand robbed Ryan Church of a Homerun!
Dmitri Young rocketed 2 homeruns and scored 3 times as the Washington
Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 8 to 5 at
Citizen's Bank Park.
Young provided the offensive punch. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the
2nd inning, doubled in the 4th inning and hit a bases-empty home run (his
12th of the season) in the 5th inning. Washington banged out 10 hits on the
afternoon.
Matt Chico(10-9) got the win allowing 4 runs in 5 innings. Chad Cordero gained
credit for his 34th save. Adam Eaton(7-10) was the loser. He served up 4
homeruns in his 4 and 2/3 innings.
