| The Mets gain a half game on the idle Cubs in the wild card race with a win over the Nationals. The deciding run was scored in the 5th when Carlos Delgado went deep. The Nats almost pulled off a 9th inning tie - with one out, Ryan Zimmerman singled. Ryan Church was up next and he doubled, with the runner at a 1-11 chance to score. I keep him at third. The next play was a groundball to the shortstop from Austin Kearns, this time with a 1-14 chance for Zimmerman to score. I go for it, the throw goes home, and the roll comes up a 19! Robert Fick flies out for the third out. In other NL playoff race news, the Brewers lost so they are now tied with the Cubs for the division/wild card lead, with the Astros just one game back and the Mets 2 back in the wild card. |

25,330 fans were treated to a fine game at Shea Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The New York (NL) Mets won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
New York (NL) jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring
one runner. Washington made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to
push the needed runs across.
The victory went to Mike Pelfrey(3-5) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. Billy Wagner earned his 38th save. Matt Chico(9-9) was the losing
pitcher. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks
in 5 innings.
