The Nationals snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, as a 3-0 lead after 7 turns into a 5-3 loss. Joel Hanrahan was cruising, pitching a 2-hitter through 7 innings. In the 8th, he allowed a home run to Jimmy Rollins to make it 3-1 but otherwise escaped unscathed. In the 9th, Chad Cordero came in from the Nationals and the wheels came off. The gory details:

2 1 3 C.Utley 2-10 1 5 Single 3-H 1-2 b-1
2 12 P.Burrell 3-11 18 3 Pop Out b-0

Notice it was tied when Rauch came in with runners on 1st and 3rd, he got 2 outs and I thought he would weasel out of the jam but then he allowed singles to Rollins and Utley to score 2. Brett Myers got the Nats 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th.

The loss and the last week of the season don't mean much for the Nats, as they will almost certainly host the Central winner in the first round of the playoffs. The Rockies have 101 wins, the Nats have 89 and the Brewers and Cubs both have 83. The wild card will almost definitely come from the East or Central, so the Rockies will host that team. Currently, the Cubs have a 1 game lead over the Astros in the wild card race, with the Mets 2 1/2 back. The Brewers have just a half game on the Cubs and a game and a half on the Astros. Should be an interesting final week!

The Philadelphia Phillies came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil
the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 5 to
3.

Philadelphia had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they
scored 4 runs on 4 hits. Philadelphia finished with 8 hits in the victory.

Geoff Geary(5-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Geary was helped out by Brett Myers who recorded his 12th
save. Chad Cordero(4-5) took the loss in relief.

Manny Acta was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Charlie Manual will be glad to talk
about the game as long as you have questions to ask.'
