| The Yankees outlast the Angels in 10 innings, although the Yankees win is as much due to the runs the Angels didn't score as it is due to the run the Yankees did score in the 10th. The Yankees had a 1-0 lead when the Angels got back to back doubles from Vlad Guerrero and Garrett Anderson to tie it up at 1 in the 6th. This chased Yankee starter Chien-Ming Wang from the game in favor of Kyle Farnsworth. In the 7th, Farnsworth gets the first 2 Angel hitters before allowing singles to Reggie Willits and Chone Figgins. This brings Joba Chamberlain into the game. Chamberlain walks Orlando Cabrera to load the bases for Vlad Guerrero, but then strikes out Guerrero to end the inning. In the 9th, the pattern would repeat - 2 outs, then Willits and Figgins get on base. This time, Cabrera singles and Willits tries to score from 2nd, but is thrown out at the plate! In the top of the 10th, A-Rod walks and then steals 2nd. Jorge Posada comes up next and also walks. At this point I override the computer manager and pull starter John Lackey for Darren Oliver. Oliver gets Hideki Matsui to ground to short, but Cabrera misplays it to load the bases. Robby Cano hits a deep fly to center, A-Rod scores, and the Yankees go on to the 2-1 win! Mariano Rivera gets the save. Kelvim Escobar will try to even it up in game 2, while Andy Pettitte will try to make it a 2-0 Yankees series lead. |
