Nationals 2007 stats

The final stats for the 2007 Nationals. The Nationals hit .257 as a team, which is lower than the 2006 Nats who hit .260 as a team. Still, the Nats seemed to get the hits when it counted.

The good: Dmitri Young was my most consistently solid hitter, hitting .311 while primarily batting in the cleanup spot. His 12 home runs for the year is rather low for a cleanup hitter, but the Nats don't exactly have a lot of good hitters with power. Young's biggest downfall was his defense - he is a 5 fielder at 1B, and committed 16 errors on the season. I was thankful for the interleague games just so he could DH! Ryan Zimmerman led the team in both homers (26) and RBI (109) as the Nats #3 hitter. The biggest surprise was Nook Logan, who hit .329 in part time duty. Logan hit .265 in real life. It's not surprising that I gave him about 50 extra AB's over his real 2007 output.

The bad: maybe not bad, but disappointing. Austin Kearns was the catalyst of the 2006 Nats as a trading deadline addition, but this year disappointed in his first full season with the Nats. He hit .245, about 20 points lower than his real 2007 output. He did outperform his RBI total, though. Ryan Church was an even bigger disappointment with the bat - he hit .272 in real life, but managed just a .234 in my replay. He did hit 22 homers, good for 2nd on the team.

So what made a mediocre hitting team into a 92 win playoff bound team? The pitching. The Nats 3.73 team ERA led the NL, despite having no dominant starter. Matt Chico was the only starter to make more than 21 starts, and the only pitcher to reach double digits in wins, with 10. However, the Nats pitching depth was their true strength, with 21 different pitchers who earned a win during the year. Starter Shawn Hill was 7-0 in 16 starts, while Jon Rauch was 8-0 out of the bullpen while leading the team in appearances (68), saving 7 games and posting a 1.58 ERA.

The one stat that truly tells the story of how good the Nats bullpen was? The bullpen had 46 wins, the exact same total as the starters! Starters were 46-49 with a 4.03 ERA, relievers were 46-21 with a 3.25 ERA.
