Bot 7th: Robinson Cano robbed Maicer Izturis of a base hit.

The Los Angeles(AL) Angels scored 6 runs in the 8th inning and defeated the
New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 7 to 3 at Angels Stadium.

Darren Oliver(1-0) got the win with a nice relief outing. He surrendered no
hits and 1 walk in 1 and 2/3 innings. The teams had been locked in a
scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Mariano Rivera(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 3 hits
and no walks without retiring a batter.

Daisuke Matsuzaka takes the loss in his first ever playoff start. The longball was his downfall in this one, as he gives up 3 bombs that account for all 4 Twins runs. Manny Ramirez ruined a golden opportunity in the 6th, he came up with runners on 1st and 2nd and just one out but lined into a double play! Manny is now 0 for 8 in the series.

Tim Wakefield will take the mound in Minnesota against Matt Garza for game 3.

At Fenway Park the Minnesota Twins outscored the Boston Red Sox 4 to
1.

Minnesota had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 3rd inning. That was
all the runs Carlos Silva(1-0) needed. Boston could do no damage in the
bottom of the 9th.

Joe Nathan got the save, his 1st. Daisuke Matsuzaka(0-1) was charged with the
loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work.

The Yankees outlast the Angels in 10 innings, although the Yankees win is as much due to the runs the Angels didn't score as it is due to the run the Yankees did score in the 10th.

The Yankees had a 1-0 lead when the Angels got back to back doubles from Vlad Guerrero and Garrett Anderson to tie it up at 1 in the 6th. This chased Yankee starter Chien-Ming Wang from the game in favor of Kyle Farnsworth. In the 7th, Farnsworth gets the first 2 Angel hitters before allowing singles to Reggie Willits and Chone Figgins. This brings Joba Chamberlain into the game. Chamberlain walks Orlando Cabrera to load the bases for Vlad Guerrero, but then strikes out Guerrero to end the inning. In the 9th, the pattern would repeat - 2 outs, then Willits and Figgins get on base. This time, Cabrera singles and Willits tries to score from 2nd, but is thrown out at the plate!

In the top of the 10th, A-Rod walks and then steals 2nd. Jorge Posada comes up next and also walks. At this point I override the computer manager and pull starter John Lackey for Darren Oliver. Oliver gets Hideki Matsui to ground to short, but Cabrera misplays it to load the bases. Robby Cano hits a deep fly to center, A-Rod scores, and the Yankees go on to the 2-1 win! Mariano Rivera gets the save.

Kelvim Escobar will try to even it up in game 2, while Andy Pettitte will try to make it a 2-0 Yankees series lead.

Third baseman Ryan Braun had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Milwaukee Brewers
defeated the Colorado Rockies 5 to 3 at Coors Field.

Milwaukee came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
with 2 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Johnny Estrada keyed the
rally when he doubled. Geoff Jenkins was the next batter, but he struck out.
Rickie Weeks then drew a walk. J.J. Hardy was up next and he banged out a
single driving in a run. Hardy took second on the throw. Braun stepped into
the box and stroked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning.
Milwaukee out-hit Colorado for the game, 13 hits to 7.

Derrick Turnbow(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Francisco
Cordero was credited with his 1st save. Taylor Buchholz(0-1) was given the
loss in relief.

2 3 R.Weeks 4- 6 19 6 Ground Out b-0

Oh and that Rickie Weeks ground out that ended the game with the tying run on third? It came on a 19 on a 1-18 single, 19-20 ground out chance.

The Rockies had a 5-1 lead thanks to a 4 run 3rd, when Todd Helton and Garrett Atkins hit back to back doubles with 2 out and the bases loaded.

Franklin Morales of the Rockies takes on Dave Bush of the Brew Crew in game 2.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Cory Sullivan robbed Rickie Weeks of an extra base hit.

First baseman Todd Helton had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Colorado Rockies
outscored the Milwaukee Brewers 5 to 4.

Jeff Francis(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He allowed only
4 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. Milwaukee threatened in the 9th but
Colorado was able to put down the rally.

Manny Corpas recorded his 1st save. Yovani Gallardo(0-1) took the loss. He
was touched for 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Josh Beckett comes out the winner in a duel between the majors only 20 game winners, but it didn't always look like it was going to turn out that way. Beckett and Santana were both throwing up goose eggs through the first 3 innings, but the Twins strike first in the 4th with doubles from Jason Kubel and Justin Morneau. The Twins add another in the 6th on a Morneau single following a Joe Mauer double. Meanwhile, Santana was continuing to mow them down. The Red Sox missed a golden opportunity in the 6th when they loaded the bases with one out for Manny Ramirez, but Manny strikes out and then Mike Lowell flies out to end the inning.

Finally in the 7th, the Red Sox get something going with a leadoff double from JD Drew. Jason Varitek is up next, and he hits it deep for a 2 run game tying home run over the Green Monster! If that wasn't enough, Julio Lugo gives the Sox the lead 2 batters later with a solo shot. Okajima in the 8th and Papelbon in the 9th, and the game one win belongs to the Red Sox!

The Boston Red Sox nipped the Minnesota Twins 3 to 2 at Fenway Park in a hard
fought contest.

Josh Beckett(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Boston. He was
reached for 7 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. Boston finished with 8 hits in
the victory.

Beckett was helped out by Jonathan Papelbon who recorded his 1st save. Johan
Santana(0-1) was given the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 7 hits in 6 and 1/3
innings.

The Nationals make easy work of the Cubs in the 8-2 game 1 win. The Nationals batted around in the first and chased Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano from the game with 6 hits and 5 runs. That was all Matt Chico would need, as he pitches 5 shoutout innings before tiring in the 6th and giving up a couple runs. The Nats bullpen took over at that point and coasted to the eventual 8-2 win. Every hitter in the Nats lineup had a hit with the exception of Nook Logan, who still scored the 1st run of the game thanks to a leadoff walk.

Ted Lilly of the Cubs will face Shawn Hill of the Nats in game 2.
