| A day after being the goat that blew a lead in a game that the Red Sox would go on to win in extra innings by a score of 4-3, Eric Gagne is the hero who gets the save in a game that the Red Sox won in extra innings by a score of 4-3. It is Gagne's first save in a Red Sox uniform. In this one, the game was tied at 2 at the end of 9 innings. The Red Sox would score a run in the top of the 11th thanks to an error following a hit batsman and a single, so I brought in Jonathan Papelbon to hopefully preserve the win. Instead, AJ Pierzynski would lead off the bottom of the 11th with a solo homer to tie the game. Paps would get out of the inning otherwise unscathed. The Sox loaded the bases in the 12th for Big Papi, who drew a walk to once again break the tie. This time, I went with Hideki Okajima with 3 lefties due up in the bottom of the 12th. Oki would strike out Jim Thome but walk the other 2 lefties, clearly tired from being used in 3 games in 2 days. With one out, runners on 1st and 2nd, and a righty up, I take my chances with Gagne. He gets Josh Fields to ground into a double play, and the game is over! It's Gagne's 12th save of the year. Papelbon gets the blown save (his 4th), but also the win (his 3rd). |
