| The slugging Nats get 3 home runs to help knock off the best team in the National League by a 9-4 score. The Rockies had an early 1-0 lead thanks to a Matt Holiday solo homer, but the Nats came roaring back in the 5th with a solo homer from Ronnie Belliard and a grand slam from Ryan Zimmerman. The Rockies would pull within one, but the Nats would counter with 4 runs in the top of the 8th. Dmitri Young led off the inning with a triple, then scored on an Austin Kearns sac fly. Wily Mo Pena doubled, which brought a pitching change with Matt Herges out of the pen. Herges would get Ronnie Belliard to fly out, but with Jesus Flores up against the righty Herges the Nats would pinch hit with lefty Ryan Church. He would be intentionally walked to bring the pitcher up to bat, so I pinch hit with lefty Brian Schneider (who would be coming in anyway to replace Flores). Schneider cracks one out of the park, a 3 run shot and the Nats' 8th run of the game to score on a longball. Zimmerman's grand slam is his 2nd of the season, the 18th man to do that this season. He joins teammate Ryan Church, who had 2 in one game. Jorge Posada of the Yankees leads the league with 3. |
