The Nationals win their 6th straight with another come from behind victory. Ronnie Belliard was again the hero, this time going 4 for 4 and knocking in 4 of the 5 runs, including the 2 key runs in the 8th on a 2 run homer. The Marlins got a leadoff double in the 9th from Matt Treanor and he would advance to third on a balk, but he would be erased on a failed squeeze play.

Ronnie Belliard had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Washington Nationals topped the
Florida Marlins by a score of 5 to 4 at RFK STADIUM.
Belliard made sure the Washington fans enjoyed themselves. He smacked a
single in the 3rd inning, laced a one-base hit in the 5th inning, laced a
base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 6th inning and bombed a two-run
dinger (his 11th of the season) in the 8th inning. Florida had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.
Jesus Colome(6-3) was the winner allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Chad Cordero
earned his 31st save. Harvey Garcia(0-1) was given the loss in relief.
Washington won for the 6th straight time.
A potential pitchers duel between Josh Beckett and Roy Halladay ends up decidedly one-sided, with the Red Sox eventually winning it by the score of 14-0. The Red Sox drew first blood in the 2nd when Mike Lowell doubled and then scored on a Kevin Youkilis single, but the real killer was the 3rd when the Red Sox scored 7 runs. The big blow was a Jason Varitek grand slam home run which chased Halladay from the game. Halladay's line: 2 1/3, 7 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 2 K. The Red Sox would greet Brandon League right after Tek's shot with back to back doubles from Coco Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury, which would add another run to the Sox tally. Ellsbury would add 2 more in the 5th with his first major league home run, while Crisp would score 3 runs in a 4 for 4 day. Not to be outdone, Big Papi hit his 31st homer in the 7th inning, resulting in the Sox' 12th, 13th and 14th runs of the game. Beckett ends up going 7 innings before giving way to Kyle Snyder, who upholds the shutout.

WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Jason Varitek blocked the plate, saving a run!
What an evening for the Boston Red Sox! They shellacked the Toronto Blue Jays
pitching for 14 runs while Josh Beckett(22-1), with relief help from Kyle
Snyder, throttled Toronto.
Boston went ahead for good in the 2nd inning scoring one runner using 3 hits.
That was all the offense they were to need. Boston had 19 hits for the game
and Toronto had 6.
Roy Halladay(15-9) was the loser. He was not very effective, surrendering 7
runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Boston continued their winnings ways improving
their record to a division leading 105-34. They are 8-2 in their last ten
games. Toronto has a record of 68-70 after the loss.
Deuces were wild in this game, as all the runs were scored in pairs. The Blue Jays got 2 in the top of the 1st, which the Red Sox countered in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Jays came back with 2 in the 2nd (on back to back homers from Aaron Hill and Gregg Zaun) which gave them a 2 run lead that would hold until the 5th. The Sox got 2 in the bottom of the 5th to tie it, then broke the tie in the 8th when Dustin Pedroia knocked in 2 with what else, a 2 base hit. Jonathan Papelbon shut down the Blue Jays in the 9th for his 41st save. Mike Timlin got his 6th win against no losses; Timlin has shown a remarkable knack for being the pitcher of record when the Sox come back in the late innings.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park as
the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays by the count of 6 to 4.
Mike Timlin(6-0) came through for Terry Francona with an excellent relief
stint. He did not allow a baserunner in his 1 inning. Boston totaled 7 hits
on the night.
Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 41st save. Brian Tallet(4-5) was
charged with the loss in relief. The winning ways continue for Boston. They
now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. With the loss, Toronto has a record
of 6-4 lately, 68-69 overall.
Ronnie Belliard comes through with the winning hit in extra innings for the second straight day. Fortunately for the Nats bullpen, this time he does it in the 10th inning, instead of the 20th. Ryan Zimmerman led off the 10th with a double, but Dmitri Young hit a fly out and Austin Kearns popped out. The Marlins intentionally walked Wily Mo Pena, who had homered earlier in the game, which brought up Belliard, who doubled to bring in Zimmerman with the winning run. Chad Cordero gets the win after pitching a scoreless 10th; he was the only bullpen pitcher that didn't appear in yesterday's 20 inning marathon.

WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Dan Uggla robbed Felipe Lopez of a base hit.
Dmitri Young went deep as the Washington Nationals defeated the Florida
Marlins in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at RFK STADIUM.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Washington ended up winning it in the
10th inning. Ryan Zimmerman doubled. Two outs later Wily Mo Pena stepped up
to the plate and he was walked intentionally. Ronnie Belliard then doubled
resulting in an exciting win for Washington and a wild post-game celebration
by the home town fans. Washington and Florida each finished the afternoon
with 7 hits.
Chad Cordero(4-3) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
Chris Seddon(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2
hits in 2/3 of an inning.
The Nationals finally come up victorious in a marathon 20 inning contest vs. the Giants. The Nats tied the score at 2 in the 8th with back to back doubles from Felipe Lopez and Ryan Zimmerman, then neither team scored for 11 innings. Finally in the 20th, Ryan Church walked and then advanced to 3rd on a suprise single from pitcher Chris Schroder (who was getting pulled for the next inning, but there were no bats left on the bench). With Schroder on first and Church on third, Ronnie Belliard singled up the middle to score Church with the winning run.

One run was the difference at RFK STADIUM as the Washington Nationals defeated
the San Francisco Giants in 20 innings 3 to 2.
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Washington ended up
winning it in the 20th inning. After an out was recorded, Ryan Church drew a
walk. One out later, Chris Schroder stepped up to the plate and he lined a
one-base hit. Ronnie Belliard then lashed a single making Washington the
victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Washington managed 16 hits
in their victory.
The winning pitcher was Schroder(4-2) who allowed no runs in 4 innings. Steve
Kline(2-4) was the loser in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 2 walks in 2 and
2/3 innings.
The Red Sox crush the Orioles again and wrap up a series that was pure domination, outscoring the O's by a total of 24 runs to 1. The Orioles scored a run in the first inning of the first game of the series, then failed to score over the next 26 innings. Today, it's 7 innings from Jon Lester and an inning each from Bryan Corey and Hideki Okajima for the combined shutout. For the Sox offense, doubles were the name of the game, with 6 total including 2 each from Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell. Jacoby Ellsbury got the first stolen base of his major league career, and scored twice thanks to a single and 2 walks.

Ronnie Belliard blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Washington Nationals
topped the San Francisco Giants by a score of 12 to 3 at RFK STADIUM.
Joel Hanrahan(4-1) pitched well for Washington in their victory. He was
reached for 4 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. San Francisco was
out-hit by Washington, 13 hits to 5.
Jonathan Sanchez(3-2) was the loser. He allowed 6 runs and 4 hits in 1/3 of an
inning. This win by Washington continues their recent hot streak. In their
last ten games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are a
division leading 78-58. With the loss San Francisco now has a record of
62-74, worst in the division.
Everything was coming up Red Sox in this game, much like in real life when Clay Buchholz pitched a no-hitter in his 2nd major league start. Brian Roberts took away all hope of a replay no-hitter by doubling to lead off the game, but Buchholz would scatter 5 hits over 6 shutout innings and the Sox would beat on the Orioles to the tune of a 12-0 final. Dustin Pedroia had 3 RBI on the day, while Jason Varitek had a rare triple to plate 2.

Dustin Pedroia had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox
embarrassed the Baltimore Orioles by the lopsided score of 12 to 0.
Boston claimed the early lead in the first inning with 3 runs using 2 hits.
After an out was recorded, Pedroia was the sparkplug when he drew a walk.
One out later, Mike Lowell stepped in and he drew a walk. Kevin Youkilis
then doubled plating a run. Jason Varitek followed and he drew a walk to
load the bases. Garrett Olson then fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared
to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed
ball plating another run. Bobby Kielty kept things alive and delivered a
base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. That was all Clay
Buchholz(2-0) needed. For the game Boston out-hit Baltimore 11 to 7.
Olson(0-6) was charged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 6
walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
The standings as of the end of August. Other than the Red Sox who already clinched and the Rockies who have a 20+ game lead, the rest of the divisions should at least come down to the last week of the season.

Julian Tavarez came through with a solid 7 innings and Dustin Pedroia had 4
hits and 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles by a score of
4 to 1.
Boston jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning scoring one runner on 3 hits.
The early run support proved sufficient for Tavarez(12-6) and Boston. That
was all the run support Tavarez required. Jonathan Papelbon was perfect in
the ninth giving him his 40th save on the season.
Radhames Liz(0-2) was the losing pitcher. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed
10 batters in 6 innings.
