| Despite being outhit, the Red Sox hold on for the 3-2 win in game 1 of a day-night doubleheader with the Angels. Clay Buchholz gets the win in his major league debut, allowing 7 hits but just one run over 6 innings. The game was tied at 1 when Buchholz finished the 6th, but the Sox rally in the bottom of the 6th by loading the bases with 2 outs before Coco Crisp singles to put the good guys up by 2. Eric Gagne would try to give it away in the 8th, but the Angels would get only one and couldn't get a runner past 2nd in the 9th. Jonathan Papelbon earns his 36th save. This is the Red Sox 90th win of the year, which puts them on pace for 120 wins. They have a 26 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Yankees and may clinch the division before September 1st. Their magic number is 15. |
