Despite being outhit, the Red Sox hold on for the 3-2 win in game 1 of a day-night doubleheader with the Angels. Clay Buchholz gets the win in his major league debut, allowing 7 hits but just one run over 6 innings. The game was tied at 1 when Buchholz finished the 6th, but the Sox rally in the bottom of the 6th by loading the bases with 2 outs before Coco Crisp singles to put the good guys up by 2. Eric Gagne would try to give it away in the 8th, but the Angels would get only one and couldn't get a runner past 2nd in the 9th. Jonathan Papelbon earns his 36th save. This is the Red Sox 90th win of the year, which puts them on pace for 120 wins. They have a 26 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Yankees and may clinch the division before September 1st. Their magic number is 15.

The Red Sox outlast the Devil Rays in a 17 inning marathon to stay perfect against them on the year. The Sox were down 3-1 in the bottom of the 8th when Manny Ramirez tied it with a 2-run homer. That score would hold up until the 17th, when Carlos Pena would go deep for the 2nd time in the game and give the Rays a 4-3 lead. Thankfully, the Sox would pull of a winning rally when Kevin Youkilis walked, David Ortiz singled, and Manny singled to bring in both runners for the win. The Sox had 9 doubles in the game, including 3 by Youkilis.

WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Nook Logan robbed Pat Burrell of a Homerun!
Center fielder Nook Logan had 2 base hits at RFK STADIUM as the Washington
Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 2 to 0.
Shawn Hill(4-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 3
hits and 3 walks in 7 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.77 to 2.43. The
pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score
again.
Chad Cordero was credited with his 24th save. Kyle Lohse(4-5) was the losing
pitcher. He pitched 7 innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk.
Two dominant lefties face off in a game in which both had their out pitch working. Through 6 innings, both pitches had combined for 22 strikeouts (11 each) and allowed just 7 hits (2 for Lester, 5 for Kazmir). Unfortunately for Jon Lester, both of those hits had led to runs, and he was facing a 2-0 deficit. The 7th inning was a different story, however. Lester once again put the Devil Rays down 1-2-3, adding 2 K's to his strikeout total. Kazmir got the first 2 outs, including his 12th strikeout, but then allowed a single to Coco Crisp. Wirth big righty Wily Mo Pena due up, manager Joe Maddon goes to Gary Glover out of the pen. Glover allows a single to Pena, with Crisp advancing to third. This brings Grant Balfour out of the pen, but he allows a 3-run bomb to Julio Lugo, giving the Sox the lead. Eric Gagne would pitch the 8th, the Sox got an insurance run in the 8th, and Jonathan Papelbon gets his 35th save with a perfect 9th. Lester gets his first win of the season, and the Sox move to a perfect 8-0 against Tampa for the year.

Jon Lester struck out 13 batters as the mighty Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays by a score of 4 to 2.
Lester(1-1) was very good in the win. He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks
in 7 innings lowering his ERA from 4.64 to 4.13. Boston had 11 hits for the
game and Tampa Bay had 3.
Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 35th. Grant Balfour(1-3) was the losing
pitcher in relief. Lester was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I
had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on.
The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can
only do that again in my next outing.'
A day after getting shut out by the DBacks, the Nats return the favor with a combined shutout from Mike Bacsik, Saul Rivera and Chris Schroder. Bacsik benefitted from 3 double plays turned by the Nats in his 6 innings of work.

Designated hitter David Ortiz connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI as the
incredible Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 12
to 3 at Camden Yards.
Baltimore was unable to claim the lead after Boston went ahead in the top of
the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. Boston rapped out 13 hits for
the afternoon.
Curt Schilling(9-4) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 6 innings. The
loss was charged to Steve Trachsel(8-9). He was not very effective,
surrendering 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.
This win by Boston continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are a division
leading 86-31. Baltimore can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now
they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.
Despite outhitting the D-Backs by an 8-5 margin, the Nationals fail to score any runs and fall by a 2-0 score. Brandon Webb scattered 7 hits over 7 2/3 innings, while Nats starter John Lannan allowed a 3rd inning home run to Orlando Hudson for the only run in his 7 innings of work. Arizona would add a 2nd run with an inside the park homer in the 8th by Justin Upton off Jon Rauch.

In a game for the baseball purist, Brandon Webb(13-7) and John Lannan(0-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Arizona Diamondbacks finally emerged
victorious over Washington Nationals, 2 to 0.
Arizona took the lead for keeps in the 3rd inning scoring one runner. That
early run support was enough for Webb and Arizona. Arizona won despite being
out-hit by Washington 8 hits to 5.
Jose Valverde recorded his 27th save.
Josh Beckett earns his 19th win as the Sox just squeak by the Orioles. LOL The game was a laugher from the start, as the Sox had a 7-0 lead before an out was even recorded in the 2nd inning. The 7-0 lead (and the death blow for O's starter Garrett Olson) was a Manny Ramirez grand slam home run, a feat he would duplicate in the 6th inning. Now you might be saying "wait a minute, didn't someone else just do that?" Correct, Wily Mo Pena did it just 2 days earlier in a 20-9 whupping of the Angels. Interestingly enough, Ryan Church of my Nationals also did it earlier this season. For the record, just 12 men have done it in major league history! (The last 2 were both Red Sox - Bill Mueller in 2003 and Nomar Garciaparra in 1999). Manny's 2 grand slams were part of a 3 for 5, 9 RBI day in which he scored 5 runs. Kevin Youkilis went 3 for 5 and scored 4 times, while David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia both scored 3 times. In fact, those 3 men scored on both of Manny's slams - the first one was Pedroia walk, Youk HBP, Papi walk; the second went walk/single/walk. The Orioles issued 12 walks in the game to go along with the Sox' 15 hits.

Top 8th: Brian Roberts robbed Eric Hinske of a base hit.
Left fielder Manny Ramirez cracked 2 homeruns at Camden Yards as the Boston
Red Sox belted the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 18 to 3.
Ramirez was in a groove all day. The Baltimore fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun
in the 2nd inning, stroked a single in the 5th inning and cleared the bases
with a Grand Slam homerun (his 23rd of the season) in the 6th inning. Boston
provided plenty of action in the 2nd inning scoring 4 runs and the 6th inning
which saw them plate 5 runs on 3 hits. Boston simply wore out the Baltimore
pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.
The winning pitcher was Josh Beckett(19-1) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings.
Garrett Olson(0-3) suffered the loss. He allowed 4 hits and 5 walks in 1
inning.
'I felt great out there today' Ramirez said. 'I was seeing the ball
perfectly, and I was right on it with my swing.
This game ended up a nail-biter even though the Nats had a 4 run lead going into the bottom of the 9th. It seems that every time they got a lead, they wanted to give it right back. It started in the 3rd, when the Nats loaded the bases and got a run on a fielder's choice. They gave the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a 2-out single. In the 5th, the Nats broke through for 4 runs off old friend Livan Hernandez with 4 consecutive hits. In the bottom of the 5th, Matt Chico gives up back-to-back-to-back bombs to Orlando Hudson, Eric Byrnes, and Conor Jackson before being pulled with just a one run lead. The Nats would get isolated runs in the 6th, 8th and 9th, and would go into the bottom of the 9th with a 4 run lead and Billy Traber on the mound. Traber would quickly get the first 2 outs, but then pinch hitter Chris Snyder walked. Augie Ojeda followed with a single, then Chris Young doubled to bring in a run. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and pinch hitter Tony Clark representing the tying run at the plate, I go to the closer, Chad Cordero. Cordero allows a single to cut the lead to two, then throws a pitch to Byrnes that catcher Jesus Flores mishandles for a passed ball which allows one more run to score. Finally, Byrnes lines out to end the game and strands the tying runner at 2nd. Since the Nats never gave up their 5th inning lead but starter Matt Chico only went 4 2/3, Luis Ayala gets the win with 2 innings of hitless relief.

Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Washington
Nationals topped the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 8 to 7 at Chase
Field.
Washington scored 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning when they had 4 base
hits. The big moment was provided by Austin Kearns who deflated the mood of
the partisan fans when he doubled plating two runs. Washington out-hit
Arizona for the game, 13 hits to 8.
Luis Ayala(3-2) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Chad Cordero
recorded the save, his 23rd. Livan Hernandez(6-7) was charged with the loss.
He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.
With this win, Washington has a division leading 64-52 record. They have been
7-3 lately. With the loss, Arizona has a record of 5-5 lately, 57-60
overall.
The Red Sox come up just short in a late inning comeback and lose to the Orioles by a run. The longball was the downfall of the Sox today - Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed 3 two run homers, one each to Miguel Tejada, Aubrey Huff, and Brian Roberts. Then Mike Timlin gave up a solo shot to Kevin Millar in the 8th, and went on to give up another run. That 8th run would be the decider, as Mike Lowell would hit a 3 run shot to make it 8-7 in the 9th but the Sox would fail to get that last run they needed. A big missed opportunity in the 7th, as the Sox chased starter Erik Bedard from the game and had the bases loaded with just one out and Manny Ramirez due up. Paul Shuey enters the game, and Manny grounds into a double play!

Erik Bedard dominated striking out 10 Boston batters and shortstop Miguel
Tejada went yard and had 2 RBI as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston
Red Sox 8 to 7 at Camden Yards.
Bedard(13-8) pitched well for Baltimore in their victory. He surrendered 6
hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Boston threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.
Jamie Walker earned the save, his 10th. Daisuke Matsuzaka(12-8) was tagged
with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work.
Bedard was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my
pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got
into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again
in my next outing.'
Persistence pays off for the Nats in this one, as they fail to score until the 8th inning but still come away with the 3-1 win. The Nats got singles from Felipe Lopez and Nook Logan to start off the 8th, then Austin Kearns knocked them both in with a double after a Ryan Zimmerman fly out. Kearns would be stranded at 2nd. In the 9th, the Nats would get an insurance run thanks to a Ryan Langerhans solo homer. Jon Rauch gets the win in relief, his 6th.

In a two run game the Washington Nationals got by the San Francisco Giants by
the score of 3 to 1.
Jon Rauch(6-0) earned the victory with a fine relief performance. He did not
allow a baserunner in his 2 innings. Washington totaled 11 hits on the
afternoon.
Chad Cordero got the save, his 22nd. Patrick Misch(2-3) ended up with the
loss. He allowed 2 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings.
| The Red Sox end up a perfect 6-0 on their west coast trip after scoring 20 runs in a wild win in LA. The Red Sox had the benefit of completely boneheaded bullpen management by Mike Sciosia - pitcher Greg Jones, who has a suggested pitch count of 16, was left in to throw a mind-boggling 121 pitches in 4 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up 8 hits and walked 8, and gave up 5 runs in both the 8th and 9th inning. Wily Mo Pena was responsible for 8 of those 10 runs with a grand slam in BOTH innings! Pena now has 4 homers and 13 RBI in his last 3 games. Mike Lowell also had a big day with 4's across - 4 AB, 4 runs scored, 4 hits and 4 RBI! The Angels were also clearing the fences, chasing Jon Lester in the 5th after 3 home runs and 6 runs. Although the Sox were up 10-6 at the time, Lester doesn't get the win because he didn't go 5 complete. Eric Gagne ends up with the win after entering the game with a 12 run lead and one out in the 9th. Even though Gagne allowed an inherited run to score and loaded the bases before getting the last out, in a case like this SOM gives the win to the pitcher with the lowest ERA for the game. Gagne gets that distinction because he was the only Sox pitcher to not have a run charged to him. Here's the Sox 8th and 9th. Wily Mo Pena launched 2 homeruns as the spectacular Boston Red Sox destroyed
the reeling Los Angeles(AL) Angels by a score of 20 to 9 at Angels
Stadium.
Pena was in a groove all evening. The Los Angeles(AL) fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He doubled in the 7th inning, caught a hold of
a bad pitch for a Grand Slam homerun in the 8th inning and depressed the
partisan hometown fans with a grand slam home run (his 5th of the season) in
the 9th inning. Boston lit up the scoreboard in the 8th inning which saw
them plate 5 runs on 3 hits and the 9th inning with 5 runs. Offensively,
Boston was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Eric Gagne(3-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Dustin
Moseley(3-3) suffered the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 5 hits in 1 and
1/3 innings.
