| Jon Lester's 2nd start since his return from lymphoma is much like the first one - pitches well, leaves with a lead, the bullpen blows it, Red Sox come back to win the game. This time, Lester went just 5 innings and was already over 100 pitches, but allowed just 2 hits and one run while walking 4 and striking out 7. Manny Delcarmen blew the 2 run lead in the 6th when he coughed up a tying homer to Greg Norton, but Mike Timlin entered with 2 out and 2 on and got a ground out from Brendan Harris to end the threat. The tie score would hold until the 8th when the Sox scored 4 runs, 3 of them on a Jason Varitek home run. Julio Lugo also had a good day, going 3 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBI. |

At Tropicana Field the Boston Red Sox easily handled the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
by the score of 7 to 3.
Boston came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning when they
tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Jason Varitek who helped
quiet the crowd when he smacked a three-run homer (his 13th of the season).
Boston had 10 hits for the afternoon while Tampa Bay had 6.
The winning pitcher was Mike Timlin(3-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. James Shields(11-4) was charged with the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3
innings allowing 7 hits and 2 walks.
