Joel Hanrahan pitches shutout ball over 6 innings in his major league debut, and the Nats bats come up big as the Nats sweep the doubleheader and move into a tie for first by beating the Mets, 9-2. Hanrahan looked to be in trouble early, issuing 3 walks in the first 2 innings and getting high in the pitch count, but he settled down and went 6 without allowing a run. His counterpart Mike Pelfrey also got into walk trouble, but Pelfrey allowed a run in the 3rd and then allowed the floodgates to open when he allowed 4 straight hits after issuing a walk in the 4th. The Nats would end up scoring 5 runs in the inning, and would cruise to the 9-2 victory.

The bulk of the Nats offense came from the 8-9-1-2 part of the order. Ryan Langerhans was 2 for 4 with a walk and 3 runs scored, Hanrahan helped his own cause with a 2 for 3 day, D'Angelo Jimenez spelled Felipe Lopez at the top of the order and contributed a 2 for 5 day, and Ronnie Belliard showed signs of breaking his recent slump with a 3 for 5, 3 RBI day.
