| The Nationals move to within a game of the Mets with their 2nd straight late inning win. This game was another pitcher's duel, this time between Tim Redding and Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez. Redding blinks first, allowing a Mets run in the 7th when he walks Moises Alou and then allows consecutive singles to Lastings Milledge and Shawn Green. The 1-0 lead looked like it could stick, but a tired El Duque allows a one out single to Austin Kearns before giving up a bomb to Ryan Church. Jon Rauch gets the call for the save, and he gets the easy 1-2-3. It looked like the Mets were going to score early when they loaded the bases with no outs in the 4th, but Redding gets Moises Alou to ground to Felipe Lopez, who then fires the ball home for the 1st out. Catcher Jesus Flores then fired it to first to complete the double play, and Redding answered his defense's stellar play by striking out Lastings Milledge to end the inning. |

WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Austin Kearns robbed Shawn Green of a Homerun!
In a dramatic ending the Washington Nationals staged a comeback and held on to
win over the New York (NL) Mets by the count of 2 to 1.
Washington won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Austin Kearns keyed
the rally when he smacked a single. Ryan Church was next and he cracked a
two-run shot (his 17th of the season). The teams had been locked in a
scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
Luis Ayala(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Jon
Rauch recorded his 6th save. Orlando Hernandez(4-3) took the loss. He
pitched 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 walks.
'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Hernandez said. 'The bottom line is I
didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'
