What should have been an easy Sox win turns horribly wrong in the 9th inning. Since the Sox scored a run in the top of the 9th, I went with Manny Delcarmen rather than Jonathan Papelbon because it was no longer a save situation. Delcarmen strikes out the first batter, but then the Indians go walk-single-walk to load the bases. I bring in Papelbon, but he walks in a run, gets a strikeout, and then allows a 3-run walkoff homer to Victor Martinez.

Kason Gabbard pitches another maddening game - 5 2/3 innings, 2 hits, 7 walks. It will be his last start in a Red Sox uniform.

2 former Indians (Manny Ramirez and Coco Crisp) had 3 hits each for the Sox in the losing effort.

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Grady Sizemore robbed Wily Mo Pena of an extra base hit.
Top 7th: Victor Martinez blocked the plate, saving a run!

Right fielder Franklin Gutierrez had 2 base hits at Jacobs Field as the
Cleveland Indians came back dramatically to top the Boston Red Sox by the
score of 6 to 5.

Cleveland came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning when they scored 5 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Victor
Martinez who made the crowd come alive when he lofted a three-run bomb (his
20th of the season). Cleveland won despite being out-hit by Boston 11 hits
to 6.

The victory was credited to Jensen Lewis(1-1) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Jonathan Papelbon(1-2) suffered the loss in relief.

'What a game!,' Lewis said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't
believe it!'
