A surprise pitcher's duel between rookies John Lannan of the Nationals and Tim Lincecum of the Giants. Lincecum outlasted Lannan, but the Nationals finally broke through and put 3 on the board in the 9th. It would be all the scoring in the game once Chad Cordero got the 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th for his 21st save.

Luis Ayala(2-2) handcuffed the San Francisco Giants batters at AT&T Park in an
evening game. The Washington Nationals scored 3 runs for the
win.

Washington had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 3
hits. Dmitri Young led off and he drew a walk. Tim Lincecum then let a
pitch get away from him. Austin Kearns then doubled plating a run. After an
out was recorded, Brian Schneider came to the plate and doubled driving in
one more runner. D'Angelo Jimenez stepped into the box and delivered a
one-base hit. One out later, Jack Taschner came to the plate and threw a
wild pitch scoring the final run of the inning. Washington finished with
just 6 hits in the victory.

Chad Cordero recorded the save, his 21st. Lincecum(3-10) was the loser. He
allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox remain perfect on their west coast swing with a 7-3 win in 10 innings. Curt Schilling made his return from the DL and gave the Sox 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 2 home runs. The Sox got isolated runs in 3 separate innings, the tying run coming on a 7th inning Kevin Youkilis home run. The Sox left the bases loaded in both the 7th and 8th, with Jason Varitek striking out in the 7th and David Ortiz grounding into a double play in the 8th. Fortunately, Mike Timlin and Hideki Okajima held the Angels at bay with 3 shoutout innings.

In the 10th, Varitek led off with a walk. I attempted a bunt with Coco Crisp, but it was misplayed by Angels 3B Chone Figgins and the runners ended up on 2nd and 3rd. With lefty Darren Oliver on the mound, I pinch hit for Julio Lugo with Wily Mo Pena. The Angels countered with righty Justin Speier, but Pena still greeted him with a shot to the left field seats. The Sox would get another run in the inning on an Ortiz homer, and new face Eric Gagne would get the 3 outs in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the win.

WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Mike Lowell robbed Chone Figgins of a base hit.

Designated hitter David Ortiz jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as
the incredible Boston Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles(AL) Angels in 10
innings by a score of 7 to 3 at Angels Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Boston won it in the
10th inning. The highlight belonged to Wily Mo Pena who deflated the crowd
as he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 2nd of the season).
Boston ended up with 13 hits for the game while Los Angeles(AL) had 9.

The win was credited to Hideki Okajima(3-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings
allowing no runs. Darren Oliver(4-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He
allowed 2 runs and no hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Boston continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 82-30. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. Los Angeles(AL) can't
seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8
record over the last couple weeks.

The Nationals take over sole possession of first place in the NL East for the first time since May 22nd with a 6-3 win over the Cardinals and a Mets loss. The Nats fell all the way to 4th place in late June, but got hot in July and went from 4th place with a 7.5 game deficit on July 2nd to a tie for first on July 19th. The Nats and Mets have been tied on 3 other dates since then, but today they take the sole lead.

As for the game, the Nats won thanks to 2 seperate 3 run innings. The offense was well spread, with 6 different men scoring each of the Nats' 6 runs. Matt Chico gets the win, his 8th, while Chad Cordero gets his 20th save. Cordero was an adventure as always, loading the bases with a single, HBP, and walk before getting the 3rd out.

The Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 6 to 3
at RFK STADIUM.

Washington jumped on top of St. Louis in the 4th inning when they tallied 3
runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Dmitri Young who came through for the
home fans when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Both teams finished
the game with 8 hits.

Matt Chico(8-7) allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Chad
Cordero recorded the save, his 20th. Adam Wainwright(7-11) ended up with the
loss.

Josh Beckett earns his 18th win as the Red Sox complete the sweep of the Mariners. Alex Cora was the big hitter for the Sox, hitting a 3 run homer in the 4th and a triple in the 6th. Mike Lowell also had a good day, going 3 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored.

At SAFECO Field the Boston Red Sox easily handled the Seattle Mariners by the
score of 6 to 2.

The Seattle fans didn't appreciate the big day Alex Cora had. He belted a
three-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 4th inning, tripled resulting
in a run in the 6th inning and lined a base-hit in the 8th inning. Boston
out-hit Seattle for the game, 13 hits to 9.

Josh Beckett(18-1) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Miguel
Batista(8-6) was given the loss. He was touched for 9 hits and 2 walks in 5
and 1/3 innings.

The Nats ride the big 8 run 1st inning to the eventual 11-7 win over the Cardinals. Joel Pineiro makes his first start of the year after recently being acquired by the Cardinals from the Red Sox, and the outcome is not pretty...he gives up 4 hits, 2 walks and 5 runs before being pulled with just one out in the first. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Nats pitcher Joel Hanrahan would greet reliever Brad Thompson with a triple, hanging 2 more runs on Pineiro. Felipe Lopez would follow with a single to knock in Hanrahan with the 8th run of the inning.

Despite earning the win, Hanrahan was relatively mediocre for the Nats, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs (on 3 homers) in 5 2/3.

At RFK STADIUM the Washington Nationals easily handled the St. Louis Cardinals
by the score of 11 to 7.

Obviously without his best stuff, Joel Hanrahan(2-0) still hung on to pick up
the win. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings and was touched
for 3 homeruns. Washington totaled 11 hits on the night.

Hanrahan got help from Jon Rauch who was credited with his 7th save. Joel
Pineiro(2-2) was given the loss. He surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks in 1/3 of
an inning.

Daisuke Matsuzaka no-hits the Mariners for 7 2/3 innings on his way to a 3-hit shutout and his 12th win of the year. Raul Ibanez spoils the no-no with a double, but the Red Sox already had a 7 run lead by that point.

David Ortiz had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Daisuke Matsuzaka carried a no-hitter
into the 7th inning at SAFECO Field where the amazing Boston Red Sox beat the
Seattle Mariners 7 to 0.

Matsuzaka(12-7) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Seattle
hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings lowering his ERA to 3.76. The right-handed Matsuzaka lost his no-hit
bid when Raul Ibanez doubled with two outs in the 7th inning. Boston had a
total of 13 hits for the game.

Jarrod Washburn(6-12) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 3
walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Boston now has a record of a division leading
80-30. With the loss, the Seattle ballclub's record is 47-61, worst in the
division.

Tacoma, WA native Jon Lester takes his first loss of 2007 in the first game of a west coast swing through Seattle and LA. Lester allowed 5 hits in a 3 run 5th, which would be all the runs that Horacio Ramirez would need.

Fun fact: There were 17 hits in this game between both teams. 15 of them were singles.

Left fielder Adam Jones left the yard at SAFECO Field as the Seattle Mariners
beat the Boston Red Sox 3 to 1.

Seattle came up with all the runs they needed in the 5th inning scoring 3 runs
utilizing 5 base hits. Jones was the sparkplug when he smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' (his 1st of the season). Jose Lopez came next and he laced a
single. Yuniesky Betancourt then hit a single. Ichiro Suzuki stepped in and
he lined a one-base hit to load the bases. After an out was recorded, Jose
Guillen came up and he ripped a base-knock adding another two runs to their
total. Seattle had 9 hits for the night.

Horacio Ramirez(2-5) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 5 and 1/3
innings. Ramirez got help from J.J. Putz who earned his 26th save. Jon
Lester(0-1) was given the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 7 hits
and 2 walks.

The Nationals ride a big 6 run 2nd inning to an 8-3 win. The big hit was a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double from Ronnie Belliard. Reds starter Phil Dumatrait was the loser in his major league debut.

All 3 Cincinnati runs scored on solo home runs, 2 from catcher Dave Ross.

Shortstop Alex Cora cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox
defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6 to 2 at Fenway Park.

Boston jumped on top to stay in the 3rd inning plating an isolated run on 2
hits. After an out was recorded, Kevin Youkilis doubled. One out later,
Manny Ramirez came to the plate and doubled scoring the run. Overall Boston
out-hit Baltimore 14 to 8.

Tim Wakefield(13-5) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory.
Jeremy Guthrie(8-7) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Boston,
allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

Boston now has a record of a division leading 79-29. Baltimore has a record
of 58-49 after the loss.

The Nationals earn their 2nd straight win over the Reds in their last at bat, this time on a Dmitri Young home run to lead off the 9th.

The real story of the game was the 8th inning Nats rally that wasn't...with the score tied at 2, Felipe Lopez singles and is moved to 2nd when Ronnie Belliard walks. With their 3-4-5 hitters due up, it looks like the Nats might do some damage, but instead Ryan Zimmerman lines sharply to the third baseman. The third baseman wings it to 2nd to catch Lopez off, then the ball goes to 1st where Belliard is out to complete the triple play!

The game was won by Washington with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Dmitri Young smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 6th of the season) giving
Washington the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Washington
rapped out 8 hits for the night.

Jon Rauch(5-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Victor Santos(1-5)
was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 hit and no walks in 1
inning.

The Red Sox were down 6-0 in this one, but came back with 6 runs...too bad they allowed 2 more in the 9th.

Julian Tavarez got the start and continued his recent troubles, this time getting torched for 4 long balls in giving up 5 runs and 6 hits over just 4 innings. Meanwhile Steve Trachsel was holding the Sox at bay, but finally in the bottom of the 6th the Sox wear him down with 2 doubles and a single. Trachsel leaves in favor of Rob Bell, but Bell allows another double and an RBI ground out to make it 6-3 O's.

In the 9th, Mike Timlin was given the ball for the Sox but could get just one out in the 5 baserunners he faced. Eric Gagne then made his Red Sox debut, and he got 2 outs with just one pitch...a double play, obviously.

In the bottom of the 9th, the Sox bats were lively once again and made it 8-4 with 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd for David Ortiz. The Orioles brought in lefty Jamie Walker, but it didn't matter to Ortiz as he ripped a double to make it 8-6. This brings up Manny as the tying run, which brings Chad Bradford out of the 'pen for the Orioles. Unfortunately, today was not Manny's day to be the hero...Bradford gets him to pop up to the catcher to end the game.

In a tight game it was the Baltimore Orioles 8, the Boston Red Sox 6 at Fenway
Park.

In the 2nd inning Baltimore went on top for good scoring 2 runs on 2 hits.
Kevin Millar led off and started the rally when he delivered a one-base hit.
Miguel Tejada next to the plate and he smashed a two-run homer (his 10th of
the season). Baltimore ended up with 11 hits for the game while Boston had
8.

Steve Trachsel(8-7) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Trachsel got relief help from Chad Bradford who gained credit for his 4th
save. Julian Tavarez(11-5) was the losing pitcher. He served up 4 gopher
balls in 4 innings.

It takes 10 innings, but the Nationals put away the Reds by a 5-4 score. This was the Nook Logan and Felipe Lopez show, as both had 4 hits and between them scored 4 of the 5 Nats runs. In the 10th, it was Logan who led off with a single (his other 3 hits were doubles) and quickly stole 2nd. Jesus Flores pinch hit for the pitcher but struck out, followed by Lopez who flied out (his first time not reaching base in the game). Luckily, Ronnie Belliard was able to come through with a big double to send Logan home as the winning run!

Ramirez(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and no walks

Beckett did not allow a hit until the 5th, when Miguel Tejada led off with a single. He would not allow another hit until the 9th. In the meantime, the Red Sox finally got on the board in the 7th when Mike Lowell walked with one out and Kevin Youkilis followed up by planting a ball in the Monster seats. The Orioles would get a one out double in the 9th from Brian Roberts, then after the 2nd out was recorded Nick Markakis and Kevin Millar would get back-to-back singles. With a run in and runners on 1st and 2nd, Jonathan Papelbon is called from the 'pen to face Tejada. Tejada would ground out, preserving Beckett's 17th win and earning Paps his 32nd save.

Josh Beckett went 8 and two third strong innings as the strong Boston Red Sox
defeated the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 2 to 1 at Fenway
Park.

Beckett(17-1) gave Boston a solid outing. He allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk
in 8 and 2/3 innings. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.

Beckett was helped out by Jonathan Papelbon who recorded his 32nd save. Erik
Bedard(12-7) took the loss. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 12 batters
in 7 and 2/3 innings.

The Boston ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 78-28.
Baltimore has a record of 57-48 after the loss.

The Mets get a walkoff win to salvage the final game of their 4 game series with the Nats and regain sole possession of 1st place in the NL East in the process. The Nationals got 2 runs in the 2nd on a Brian Schneider home run and it looked like enough, as starter Billy Traber went 7 strong innings giving up just one run. Instead, the normally dominant Jon Rauch gave up a run in the 8th on a walk, stolen base, and a double from David Wright. Then Luis Ayala entered in the 9th and it all went south - Moises Alou single, error by Austin Kearns on a Damion Easley fly ball, and a Raul Castro single pushes across the winning run.
