Billy Traber is a hard luck loser in his first start of the year, a fine 6 inning effort which falls short against a finer 6 inning effort from Aaron Cook. The lone Nats run comes in the 4th on a Ryan Zimmerman solo homer.

Aaron Cook came through with a solid 6 innings as the Colorado Rockies beat
the Washington Nationals by a score of 2 to 1.
Colorado tallied 1 run in the 5th inning. Latroy Hawkins was perfect in
relief and gained credit for his 3rd save.
Cook(12-5) went 6 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Billy Traber(1-2)
ended up with the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings.
You would think that allowing 8 hits, 4 walks and 6 runs over 6 innings would earn Josh Beckett his first loss of the year. However, you would be wrong! The Red Sox offense turns a 6-1 deficit into a 9-6 advantage, and Beckett ends up with his 16th win of the season. Beckett was not sharp through the first 4 innings, although 2 of his runs allowed were unearned due to errors by Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek. The Red Sox comeback started in the bottom of the 4th, when the Sox loaded the bases with no outs and got a sac fly from Eric Hinske that turned into 2 runs when Chicago centerfielder Jerry Owens misplayed the ball. They would get a third run on a Julio Lugo single. They would get the 2 runs to tie it in the 5th off one swing by JD Drew with Big Papi on base by way of the walk. At this point, the Sox had tied the game, assuring Beckett would not take the loss. Beckett was up around 95 pitches and I debated whether to bring him back out for the 6th. I decided to leave him in, and he struck out the side! The Sox hitters responded by scoring 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning to make Beckett the pitcher of record for the win. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon preserve the lead, although Paps gave up a homer to Jim Thome. The Sox were active on the basepaths today, with 4 steals.

In a two run game the strong Boston Red Sox got by the Chicago (AL) White Sox
by the score of 9 to 7.
Josh Beckett(16-0) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He
surrendered 8 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings. Beckett struckout 8 Chicago
(AL) batters and was touched for 2 homeruns. Due to a poorly pitched
ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for Chicago
(AL) to come away with the victory.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded the save, his 29th. Jose Contreras(5-7) took the
loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Chad Cordero almost blows this one for the Nats, but ends up getting the win when the Nats score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. Cordero entered in the 8th after Chris Schroder had given up 2 runs, enabling the Rockies to move within a run. With 2 outs and the tying run on 1st, Cordero gave up 3 straight singles which enabled the tying run to score and loaded the bases for Jamey Carroll, who thankfully grounds out for the 3rd out. The Nats go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th and Cordero amazingly keeps the Rockies from scoring in the 9th. Brian Schneider grounds out to lead off the Nats 9th, and I pinch hit with Nook Logan to face lefty Jeremy Affeldt. The Rockies counter with righty Taylor Buchholz, who gets a ground ball from Logan but misplays it to put Logan on 1st. Nook is fast and quickly swipes 2nd for his 16th steal of the season. With the pitcher due up, I pinch hit with Tony Batista which brings out another Rockie pitcher, Matt Herges. Batista singles, and Logan scores on a 1-16 chance to send the 32,693 fans home happy.

Ryan Church hit a homerun and had 2 RBI at RFK STADIUM as the Washington
Nationals won a thriller over the Colorado Rockies in, 5 to 4.
Washington won the game with a run in the 9th inning. After an out was
recorded, Nook Logan reached on an error. Logan stole second with some
aggressive base running. Tony Batista then delivered a base-hit resulting in
an exciting win for Washington and a wild post-game celebration by the home
town fans. Washington won despite being out-hit by Colorado 12 hits to 8.
Chad Cordero(3-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Taylor
Buchholz(4-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a
batter allowing no hits and no walks.
The Pale Hose come to town and win the battle of the Sox, 9-7. Daisuke Matsuzaka was not sharp in this one, giving up 9 hits and 5 runs in 6 innings. With the Red Sox down by 2, Kyle Snyder gave up any chance at a comeback when he allowed a grand slam to Tadahito Iguchi in the 8th inning. Fortunately for Snyder's ERA, all 4 runs were unearned thanks to an error...by Snyder. The Red Sox do come right back with 4 in the bottom of the 8th, including a 2-run Manny Ramirez homer, but woudn't be able to get the 2 more runs they needed.

In a two run game the Chicago (AL) White Sox got by the Boston Red Sox by the
score of 9 to 7.
The Boston fans didn't appreciate the big day Tadahito Iguchi had. He doubled
bringing in two baserunners in the 2nd inning and caught a hold of a bad
pitch for a Grand Slam homerun (his 6th of the season) in the 8th inning.
Chicago (AL) totaled 10 hits on the night.
The winning pitcher was Javier Vazquez(10-5) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Bobby Jenks was credited with his 22nd save. Daisuke
Matsuzaka(10-6) was the loser.
The Royals come away with a win in 13 innings, the first time in 8 tries that the Red Sox have not been victorious in extra innings. The Red Sox had to play comeback 3 times in this one: the Royals took a one run lead in the 9th, but JD Drew tied it with a solo shot; the Royals again scored a run in the 12th, but Jason Varitek tied it back up with a solo shot; finally, the run in the 13th sticks for Kansas City. Plenty of missed opportunities in this one, as the Red Sox left 13 men on base.

Billy Butler had 5 hits and 3 RBI and Jimmy Gobble had a strong outing at
Fenway Park where the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox in 13
innings by the score of 7 to 6.
The score was tied at 5 after nine. Kansas City came out the victor in the
13th inning. Mark Grudzielanek doubled. After an out was recorded, Butler
came to the plate and laced a base-hit scoring the run. A wild affair, this
game saw the lead change 7 times.
The victory was credited to Ryan Braun(1-1) who went 1/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Octavio Dotel earned the save, his 7th. Joel Pineiro(2-1)
was the losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 2
innings.
The Nationals put a whuppin' on the Astros to take the rubber game of their 3 game series. This one was over before it started, as the Nats countered the Astros 1st inning run with 4 of their own. The big hit was a 3 run homer from Ryan Church. Austin Kearns would also come through for the 2nd straight day, with a 2-run homer on the 3rd and 2 more RBI's from a 5th inning double.

WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Austin Kearns robbed Eric Munson of a Homerun!
Top 8th: D'Angelo Jimenez robbed Morgan Ensberg of a base hit.
Austin Kearns lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI as the Houston
Astros were badly beaten by the Washington Nationals, 12 to 1.
It was a good day for Washington thanks to Kearns. He lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run (his 9th of the season) in the 3rd inning and
doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 5th inning. For the game
Washington out-hit Houston 11 to 4.
Jason Bergmann(3-5) went 6 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Jason
Jennings(2-6) took the loss. He gave up 4 runs in 2 innings of work.
Tim Redding makes his third start of the season for the Nationals, and while he has pitched well in all 3 games this is the first time that he gets a win. He threw shutout ball until tiring in the 7th, while the Nats put up 6 runs for him to work with. The offense was led by Austin Kearns, who hit a 2 run homer in the 2nd and contributed an RBI single in the 4th. The Nats were also helped by the poor fielding of Astros 3B Mike Lamb, who committed an error that helped lead to Nats runs in both the 4th and 5th innings.

At RFK STADIUM the Houston Astros were battered 6 to 1 by the Washington
Nationals.
Washington took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on
1 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Washington had 8
hits for the night.
Tim Redding(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 innings. The loss
was charged to Chris Sampson(6-6). He gave up 6 runs and 8 hits in 6
innings.
Tim Wakefield throws 8 shutout innings for his 11th win, and Jonathan Papelbon adds one more for his 28th save. Red Sox starters have now pitched 24 straight scoreless innings and have had 3 straight games in which the starter has not thrown a complete game but has left the game without allowing a run. The Sox got one run in the 2nd when Youk was hit by a pitch and would come around to score on back to back singles from Doug Mirabelli and Julio Lugo, then would add 2 more in the 8th on a Jason Varitek pinch hit sac fly and another Lugo single.

WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Julio Lugo robbed Alex Gordon of a base hit.
Tim Wakefield had a strong outing at Fenway Park as the strong Boston Red Sox
beat the Kansas City Royals 3 to 0.
Wakefield(11-5) was virtually untouchable. He gave up just 4 hits and no
walks in 8 innings. For the game Boston out-hit Kansas City 9 to 5.
Jonathan Papelbon earned his 28th save. The losing pitcher was Leo
Nunez(0-1). He gave up 1 run and 7 hits in 6 innings. The Boston ballclub's
record now stands at a division leading 71-22. With the loss, Kansas City
has a record of 4-6 lately, 36-57, worst in the division overall.
The Red Sox hold on for a 3-2 win over the Royals, who are making their first and only trip to Fenway Park this year. Kason Gabbard was once again impressive, holding the Royals hitless until a 5th inning single by Alex Gordon. Gabbard allowed just 3 hits over 7 shutout innings, walking 3 and striking out 6. Gabbard has allowed no runs in 3 of his 5 starts this season, but walks are his downfall - in fact, opposing hitters are more likely to walk (21 in 37 innings) or strike out (23) than get a hit (17) against Gabbard. Once Gabbard leaves, Joel Pineiro contributes a less that impressive 8th inning, allowing a 2 run home run to Mark Teahan to cut the deficit to a run. Papelbon gets the day off after 2 straight 9th inning saves, but Hideki Okajima proves up to the task by striking out the side in the 9th. The Sox got solo homers from both a likely source (David Ortiz) and an unlikely source (Julio Lugo) in the win.

35,049 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The incredible Boston
Red Sox topped the Kansas City Royals by the slimmest of margins, 3 to
2.
Boston jumped on top of Kansas City in the 4th inning plating an isolated run
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, David Ortiz cracked a solo
homerun (his 23rd of the season). Hideki Okajima pitched a perfect ninth and
was credited with his 3rd save.
The victory went to Kason Gabbard(4-0) who went 7 innings, allowing no runs.
The losing pitcher was Brian Bannister(3-7). He pitched 7 innings allowing 7
hits and no walks.
The Nationals complete the series sweep of the Marlins with a 9-3 win. The Marlins jumped out to an early lead in this one, but the Nats tied the score and eventually took the lead thanks to some downright sloppy play by the Marlins. In the 6th, the Nats scored 2 runs to take a 5-3 lead when the Marlins commited 3 errors in the inning, 2 by first baseman Mike Jacobs. The Nats would bat around and score 4 more in the 8th. The Marlins intentionally walked the bases loaded twice in the inning; once was followed by a wild pitch to score a run, the other followed by a balk to score a run. The win was the Nats 5th straight and gives them 9 wins in their last 10 games.

The Washington Nationals put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning and
had very little trouble at Dolphins Stadium downing the Florida Marlins. The
score was 9 to 3.
Jason Simontacchi(6-5) had a steady outing. He went 5 innings allowing 5 hits
and 3 walks. Overall Washington out-hit Florida 10 to 7.
Armando Benitez(2-4) took the loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss
despite not allowing an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
The Red Sox end up with a series split with Toronto after taking the final game of the 4-game series by a 3-0 score. Josh Beckett wins his 15th game without a loss with 7 shutout innings. That surpasses another hard-throwing Texan who won 14 games for the Red Sox in 1986 before being dealt his first loss of the season. Despite a relatively low pitch count, Beckett started to tire in the 7th and gives way to Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon, who make it look easy in preserving the shutout. David Ortiz' 2 run homer in the first was all the offense the Sox would need, although they would add a run in the 4th on an RBI double from Doug Mirabelli.

loss, Toronto has a record of 4-6 lately, 44-47 overall.
| The Nationals take down the Marlins for the 2nd straight day. Whatever's been in the water that has suddenly made the Nats starters good is working on Matt Chico, who goes 7 innings and allows just 1 unearned run, same as his last outing. The Nats add 2 runs in the top of the 8th on a Ryan Langerhans homer, which puts Chico in line for the win if the Nats can hold the lead. After yesterday's debacle, I try Ray King in the 9th to get a lefty out with plans to go to Jon Rauch. It's not exactly clean, but in the end Rauch does the job and earns his 5th save. The Washington Nationals edged the Florida Marlins at Dolphins Stadium by the
score of 3 to 2.
Washington won the game with a rally in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 2
hits. Brian Schneider started the inning off right when he banged out a
single. D'Angelo Jimenez was the next batter, but he struck out. Ryan
Langerhans then cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 7th of the
season). Florida had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Matt Chico(7-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 1
run. Jon Rauch recorded his 5th save. Sergio Mitre(6-3) was the loser.
All-star Dustin McGowan takes his first loss on the season when the Red Sox bat around in a 4 run 4th inning. The first 5 hitters in the inning all reached base resulting in 2 runs, then after 2 outs Coco Crisp added 2 more with a double to the triangle in center. The 4 runs would be plenty for Daisuke Matsuzaka, who goes to double digits in wins with a 7 inning, 9 strikeout performance. The only blemish for Dice-K was a 5th inning 2-run homer by Red Sox nemesis Gregg Zaun. Jonathan Papelbon gets the save, his 26th.

In a close game the Boston Red Sox got by the Toronto Blue Jays by the score
of 4 to 2.
Daisuke Matsuzaka(10-5) gave a fine effort for Boston. He was reached for 5
hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Matsuzaka struckout 9 Toronto batters.
Boston and Toronto each finished the night with 5 hits.
Jonathan Papelbon earned the save, his 26th. Dustin McGowan(7-1) absorbed the
loss. He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits and 5 walks.
I was in the middle of blogging this game last night when the power went out! Looks like it saved ok and didn't screw anything else up, thank god. Jason Bergmann dominates for the 2nd straight start, going 8 and giving up just 4 hits while striking out 10. Unfortunately for him, Dontrelle Willis was matching him, allowing just 3 hits over the same 8 inning span. The Nats finally get to Willis in the 9th with a leadoff Ryan Zimmerman triple followed by a groundball from Dmitri Young where the throw to the plate was too late. Willis leaves the game and the Nats would score one more for the 2-0 lead. I go to Chad Cordero to close, but as it has many times before this season, that proves to be a mistake. Cordero allows 2 walks, 2 doubles, and 2 runs to tie the game. In the top of the 10th, D'Angelo Jimenez leads off with a single. Nook Logan strikes out, but a Felipe Lopez walk and Ryan Zimmerman single load the bases. The Marlins go to Renyel Pinto out of the bullpen, and the Nats pinch hit with Tony Batista. Batista strikes out, but Ronnie Belliard draws a walk to score the go-ahead run. Jon Rauch would get the Marlins 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning for his 4th save. Time to change closers, perhaps? From the "wins aren't always a good measure of success" department: Cordero gets the win, Bergmann gets a no-decision.

Jason Bergmann dominated striking out 10 Florida batters as the Washington
Nationals topped the Florida Marlins in 10 innings by a score of 3 to 2 at
Dolphins Stadium.
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Washington came out on
top in the 10th inning. D'Angelo Jimenez lashed a single. Nook Logan was a
strikeout victim, unable to help out. Felipe Lopez then drew a walk. Ryan
Zimmerman stepped in and he lined a single to load the bases. Robert Fick
got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Ronnie
Belliard joined his teammates in the uprising and drew a walk scoring the
run. Washington had a total of 7 hits for the game.
The win went to Chad Cordero(2-3) who allowed 2 runs in 1 inning. Cordero got
help from Jon Rauch who earned his 4th save. Lee Gardner(2-3) was tagged
with the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk in 1/3 of an
inning.
