The Nationals close out a terrible June with a win, which makes them 10-16 in the month. This one was 2-0 Nats for a while thanks to a couple early runs and a solid start by Jason Bergmann, then the Pirates pulled within a run in the 7th before the Nats busted it open in the top of the 8th with 3 runs on 5 hits, the big clout belonging to Dmitri Young with his 4th homer of the year. Still, it ended up being a harrowing experience as the Pirates rally in the bottom of the 8th and the Nats barely escape with the one run lead.

OK, so Rivera didn't have his best stuff. After allowing a bases-loaded single to Jason Bay, I bring in closer Chad Cordero to (hopefully) get the third out. Instead, Cordero uncorks a wild pitch to score another run. The next batter grounds to 2nd, but Ronnie Belliard commits an error and another run comes in! The next batter went to the catcher's x-chart, but thank god it wasn't a passed ball or error, it was just a foul pop for the 3rd out.

Oh and in case you were wondering how you hit a double and a triple in an inning, score no runs, and only send 3 batters to the plate, this is how:
[1]*** TOP OF INNING 2 ***
0 B.Schneider 5- 3 5 Double b-2
0 2 J.Bergmann 4 Pop Out Double Play 2-o b-0
2 N.Logan 2- 6 8 4 Triple b-0

The explanation: Schneider doubles, and I try to sacrifice with the pitcher Bergmann. Bergmann goes to 2 strikes but it is still a 56% chance, so I go for it. Instead he pops out to 2nd and the Pirates double off Schneider! Next Nook Logan hits a triple (his 2nd of the game), and is a 1-10 for an inside the park homer. Since there's 2 outs I try it, and sure enough he pulls a 12 and is out at the plate.

First baseman Dmitri Young slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Washington
Nationals topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 4 at PNC
Park.

Washington started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first scoring one runner utilizing 3 base hits. Nook Logan tripled.
Felipe Lopez stepped up next and he banged out a single scoring the run.
Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Jason Bergmann(2-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and
allowing 1 run. Chad Cordero recorded the save, his 15th. Tom
Gorzelanny(5-9) suffered the loss.
