| The Red Sox win another close one that started out as a pitchers duel. Kason Gabbard, whose first start on the year was a complete game shutout, gets the call against hard throwing righty "King" Felix Hernandez of the Mariners. Gabbard and Hernandez both pitch scoreless ball through 5, but the Sox break through first against a tired Hernandez when they load the bases with just one out in the 6th. The Mariners go to Ryan Rowland-Smith out of the 'pen, and he gets Alex Cora to ground into a fielder's choice where they throw out the runner at home, but then walks Coco Crisp to push in the first run of the game. The Sox get another one in the 7th when Kevin Youkilis singles and is followed by a JD Drew triple, but the Mariners come right back with 2 in the bottom of the inning when Gabbard tires and gives up a single, a walk, and a 2-RBI double to Adrian Beltre. Manny Delcarment gets the last 2 outs of the inning and stays in for an impressive 8th in which he struck out the top third of the Mariners order. The Sox would get a leadoff double in the 9th from Dustin Pedroia, who would go to third on an Ortiz ground out. That brings in the Mariners closer JJ Putz, but one deep fly ball from Youk is enough to score Pedroia with the go-ahead run. Papelbon comes in and it's academic, 1-2-3 for his 23rd save. Delcarmen gets the win. |
