| A hell of a pitchers duel between veteran Greg Maddux and Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka, with Dice-K coming out on top with perhaps his best performance of his young career. Matsuzaka spreads 5 hits out over 9 innings and strikes out 10 batters on his way to the complete game shutout. He set the tone early, striking out the first 4 Padres he faced, then finished the same way by striking out the last 2 batters while the tying run sat at 3rd after an Adrian Gonzalez triple. The Sox' lone run was scored by Kevin Youkilis, who doubled to lead off the 5th, then advanced to 3rd and scored on consecutive ground outs by Varitek and Wily Mo Pena. |

Daisuke Matsuzaka dominated striking out 10 San Diego batters as the Boston
Red Sox defeated the San Diego Padres 1 to 0 at Petco Park.
Matsuzaka(9-3) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the San Diego offense.
He gave up just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.41 to
3.12. San Diego threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
The losing pitcher was Greg Maddux(7-5). He gave up just 1 run and 3 hits in
8 innings. 'Matsuzaka was the man tonight,' Terry Francona said. 'He had
just about every pitch working.'
