A rare blown save from Jonathan Papelbon, but the Red Sox still prevail in extra innings. This one started out as a pitchers duel between Josh Beckett and Tim Hudson, with Hudson holding the upper hand with a 2-1 lead going into the 8th. It looked like Beckett might be dealt his first loss of the year, but instead the Sox got 2 in the top of the 8th on an Eric Hinske pinch hit single, a JD Drew triple, and a David Ortiz RBI groundout. Paps took the ball for the 9th with the 3-2 lead, but Scott Thorman tied it with a solo homer. The 3-3 tie would hold until the top of the 11th, when the Sox got an unlikely home run from Coco Crisp with Jason Varitek on base. Manny Delcarmen got the first out in the bottom of the 11th for the Sox, but then gave way to Hideki Okajima who got the last 2 outs for his first major league save.

Coco Crisp cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the strong Boston Red Sox defeated
the Atlanta Braves in 11 innings by a score of 5 to 3 at Turner Field.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Boston came out on top in the 11th

stroked a one-base hit. Crisp was next and he popped a two-run clout over
the fence (his 3rd of the season). Boston had a total of 8 hits for the
game.

The victory was credited to Manny Delcarmen(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Hideki Okajima got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher
was Rafael Soriano(5-3) in relief.
