Finally, a game that's decided in 9 innings! The Nationals get another great pitching performance, this time from Jason Simontacchi who gives up just 4 hits and one run over 6 innings on his way to the win in a 5-1 final. The big inning for the Nats was the 5th when they got 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk. Tomorrow's game is the last before the all-star break, and the first game in 7 games in which the Nats do not face the NL Central leader - this loss drops the Brewers to 2nd, the Cubs annihilated the Pirates 22-1 to move back atop the division.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 5 to 1
at RFK STADIUM.

Jason Simontacchi(5-5) pitched a solid game. He surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk
in 6 innings. Washington ended up with 11 hits for the game while Milwaukee
had 5.

Jeff Suppan(4-8) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings and
surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk.

The Red Sox win their 9th straight game in a game with a bizarre line score - the Tigers get just one hit in the game but score 3 runs. That's because of the 9 walks issued by Sox pitchers, 7 from starter Kason Gabbard who walks in a run in the 6th and walks 2 before being pulled in the 7th. Those 2 runners would also score, but the Sox offense was putting up 8 runs behind 7 extra base hits, 3 being homers from Coco Crisp, David Ortiz and Jason Varitek. Varitek and Crisp both were one hit shy of the cycle - Crisp missed the double, while Tek more predictably missed the triple.

At Comerica Park the Detroit Tigers were battered 8 to 3 by the seemingly
unstoppable Boston Red Sox.

Kason Gabbard(3-0) pitched a solid game. He allowed 1 hit and 7 walks in 6
innings. Boston banged out 11 hits on the night.

Jeremy Bonderman(5-8) was charged with the loss. No one has been able to stop
Boston lately as they lengthened their winning streak to 9 games. Jim Leyland
was upset but philosophical about the loss. 'Sometimes you run into a team
that's on a roll. This was one of those times.'

The Nationals play their 4th straight extra inning game, this time falling to the Brewers by a 2-1 score. This also marks their 5th game against the AL Central leaders, since the Cubs dropped to 2nd right after losing the final game of a 4 game sweep. The Cubs won today also, but the Brewers win means that this odd occurrence will extend into tomorrow.

The Nats starting pitching was spot-on again, with Mike Bacsik throwing 8 shutout innings. Things looked to line up beautifully when the Nats scraped together a run in the bottom of the 8th on a pinch hit Nook Logan single, but closer Chad Cordero ruins that story by giving up a solo homer to Ryan Braun in the top of the 9th. The Nats fail to score in the bottom of the 9th and it's extra frames AGAIN. Chris Schroder enters in the 11th for the Nats and gets 2 outs before walking Prince Fielder. The next batter is Johnny Estrada, and he doubles to send Fielder home. The Nats go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning at the hands of Brewers closer Francisco Cordero. That means that a Cordero had a blown save and a save in this one!

Catcher Johnny Estrada had 4 hits as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Washington
Nationals in 11 innings by a score of 2 to 1.

Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. Milwaukee ended up
winning it in the 11th inning. After two were out Prince Fielder drew a
walk. Estrada stepped into the batter's box and he doubled scoring the run.
The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning.

Derrick Turnbow(4-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and
allowing no runs. Turnbow got help from Francisco Cordero who was credited
with his 21st save. Chris Schroder(1-1) was the loser in relief. He gave up
1 run and 1 hit in 1 inning.

I'm running out of superlatives to describe Julian Tavarez' season. He gets his 11th win in this one, which ties him with Johan Santana for 2nd in the AL behind teammate Josh Beckett's 14. This is his 6th straight start in which he has walked away with a win. He pitches shutout ball for 5 innings, then starts to tire in the 6th and gets pulled for Javier Lopez. No problem - Lopez goes 1 2/3, Okajima pitches the 8th, and Paps nails down the 9th for save #25. Could an all star game berth be in the cards for Tavarez? Possibly, although he's going to face tough competition just from his own teammates.

The red-hot Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 4 to 1 at
Comerica Park.

Detroit never recovered after Boston took the lead in the top of the 2nd
inning scoring one runner on 3 hits. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect
ninth and was credited with his 25th save.

The win was credited to Julian Tavarez(11-3) who went 5 and 1/3 innings
allowing 1 run. Andrew Miller(1-2) was given the loss. No one has been able
to stop Boston lately as they lengthened their winning streak to 8 games.
'We're on quite a roll lately' said Terry Francona. 'I just hope we can keep
it going.'

A remarkable series for the Nats ends in truly remarkable fashion, as Jason Bergmann no-hits the Cubs for 8 2/3 innings but the Nationals need 15 innings to finally push a run across and win the game. This is the 2nd game in the series to end 1-0 in extra innings. It is the 3rd straight game to go to extra innings, with the previous 2 games going 12 and 13 innings respectively. The win completes the series sweep of the Cubs, which has cost the Cubs first place in the NL Central.

The story starts with Bergmann, who was quite simply dominating the Cub hitters. Only 3 batters reached base in the first 8 innings - one by walk, 2 by error, and none by hit. In the 9th, Bergmann struck out Soriano (for the 4th time!) to start the inning, then got Mike Fontenot to fly out to center. That left old friend Daryle Ward between Bergmann and history, and wouldn't you know that he lines a ball down the right field line, fair. Bergmann struck out Aramis Ramirez for the 3rd out, his 10th K of the game.

In a sense, it's probably better that Bergmann didn't get the no-hitter because the Nats didn't bother scoring any runs either. It would have been nice to win it in the bottom of the 9th, but they waste a Nook Logan leadoff single.

Instead, the bullpens take over and keep up the scoreless battle. The Cubs finally get their 2nd hit of the game in the 12th, a leadoff single by Fontenot, but he would be stranded at 2nd. The Cubs threaten in the 13th, loading the bases without benefit of a hit. They get a one out walk, followed by a Felipe Lopez error at short to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. I intentionally walk Ramirez with first open, and it works out as the next 2 batters foul out and fly out to end the threat.

Finally in the 15th, the Nats rally. Ryan Church gets a leadoff single. The pitcher's spot comes up, so I go to the last hitter on the bench, D'Angelo Jimenez. Jimenez rips a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Tony Batista grounds out and Jesus Flores flies out, but then Nook Logan walks to load the bases. The Cubs go to Scott Eyre out of the 'pen to face Felipe Lopez, but Lopez singles to score the winning run!

oh, and in a game that was bad for the Cubs offense, it doesn't get any worse than Alfonso Soriano. 0 for 6, 6 K's!

Felipe Lopez had 2 base hits and Jason Bergmann carried a no-hitter into the
9th inning at RFK STADIUM as the Washington Nationals beat the reeling
Chicago (NL) Cubs in 15 innings 1 to 0.

Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Washington ended up winning it
in the 15th inning. Ryan Church banged out a single. D'Angelo Jimenez next
to the plate and he doubled. Two outs later Nook Logan stepped up to the
plate and he drew a walk to load the bases. Lopez came up and he stroked a
base-hit making Washington victorious to the delight of the the home town
crowd. Washington finished with 10 hits while Chicago (NL) ended up with 2.

Saul Rivera(5-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. The
right-handed Bergmann lost his no-hit bid when Daryle Ward singled with two
outs in the 9th inning. The loss was charged to Sean Gallagher(0-1) in
relief. He gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 2 and 2/3 innings.

A downright filthy performance by Josh Beckett in this one. He allows a 2-run homer to Ty Wigginton in the 9th, but along the way strikes out 17 Rays hitters. The Red Sox beat up on Rays starter JP Howell, putting up 13 hits and 10 runs before Howell is mercifully yanked. I'm not sure why the Rays manager waited so long...personally, I would have pulled him after he gave up back-to-back bombs in the 4th (to Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz). Pedroia had 3 hits, as did Manny (all doubles!) and Coco Crisp (2 doubles and a single).

Josh Beckett racked up an impressive total of 17 strikeouts as the streaking
Boston Red Sox outscored the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10 to 2.

Beckett(14-0) escaped virtually unscathed against the Tampa Bay hitters. He
allowed just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Boston rapped out 16 hits for
the night.

J.P. Howell(2-3) absorbed the loss. He was touched for 13 hits and 3 walks in
4 and 1/3 innings. Beckett was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I
had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on.
The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can
only do that again in my next outing.'

From the "you couldn't script it any better" department, the Nationals win for the 2nd straight day on a Ronnie Belliard walk-off homer. Yesterday it was a 12th inning solo shot in a scoreless game, this time it was a 3-run shot in the 13th.

The real story though was how the game got to 5-5 in the first place. The Cubs broke a 1-1 tie in the 8th with a run, then took a 5-1 lead with 3 more in the 9th. The Cubs 9th:

As you can see, an error loaded the bases with 2 outs, then 3 straight batters knock in a single run with a one base advancement (walk, single, HBP). The Nats counter with this:

When Langerhans led off with the homer, I thought maybe they could get a rally going. Before you know it they get 4 straight hits and are down by just one run. A Brian Schneider walk loads the bases, Ryan Church pops out, but the Nats also take advantage of an error when Jesus Flores scores on Ryan Theriot's miscue. 4 innings later, the Nats get the winning hit from Belliard and now have a 3 game winning streak!

WEB GEMS- Bot 11th: Ryan Theriot robbed Ronnie Belliard of a base hit.

Ronnie Belliard went yard and had 3 RBI as the Washington Nationals defeated
the Chicago (NL) Cubs in 13 innings by the score of 8 to 5 at RFK
STADIUM.

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Washington
pulled the game out in the 13th inning. Ryan Zimmerman led off and keyed the
rally when he ripped a base-knock. Dmitri Young stepped up to the plate and
he stroked a base-hit. Belliard then clubbed a three-run home run (his 6th
of the season) making Washington the winners and sending the 21,023 fans home
happy. Washington had a total of 14 hits for the game.

The victory went to Chris Schroder(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
Billy Petrick(0-2) suffered the loss in relief. He was unable to retire a
batter giving up 3 hits and no walks.

The Red Sox celebrate America's birthday by handling the Devil Rays with ease. Tim Wakefield allows just 5 hits and 1 run over 8 innings, which earns him his 10th win and moves him to 2nd in the AL in ERA, behind teammate Josh Beckett. Eric Hinske was the big star on offense, going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI on 2 home runs.

Eric Hinske ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays by the score of 6 to 1 at Fenway Park.

Hinske had a big day at the plate. He delivered a base-hit in the 2nd inning,
lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 7th inning and lost the ball over the
fence for three runs (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th inning. Overall
Boston out-hit Tampa Bay 10 to 5.

Tim Wakefield(10-4) was the winner allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Edwin
Jackson(4-7) took the loss. It was another victory for Boston at Fenway
Park. Now their winning streak stands at 6 games.

A remarkable win for the Nats in a game that goes scoreless until the 12th inning. The Nats allowed just 5 hits over those 12 innings, as Tim Redding goes 7 scoreless in his Nats debut, followed by Chris Schroder who pitches 3 hitless innings to be followed by Jon Rauch who allows just 1 hit over 2 innings. Finally in the bottom of the 12th, Ronnie Belliard breaks the tie and ends the game by putting one in the seats off Cubs reliever Mike Wuertz.

This marks back-to-back wins for the Nats, something they hadn't done in 3 weeks.

Jon Rauch(4-0) mystified Chicago (NL) while the Washington Nationals managed
just one run in a 12 inning evening game at RFK STADIUM.

Neither team managed to score in the first nine innings. Washington won the
game in the 12th inning. Ronnie Belliard cracked a solo homerun (his 5th of
the season) resulting in an exciting win for Washington and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans. For the game Washington out-hit Chicago
(NL) 9 to 5.

Mike Wuertz(2-2) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2 hits in
1 and 1/3 innings.

Daisuke Matsuzaka was not sharp, but the Sox give him 4 runs and the bullpen holds the tie until the 11th, when Dustin Pedroia leads off with a double and is knocked in by Manny Ramirez' single. Walks are the problem for the Rays, with 8 over the 11 innings, 6 of which were in the 1st and 6th innings when the Red Sox got their first 4 runs.

David Ortiz had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays in 11 innings by a score of 5 to 4.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Boston won the hard fought contest in the
11th inning. Dustin Pedroia doubled. After an out was recorded, Manny
Ramirez stepped in and he laced a base-hit making Boston the victors to the
delight of the home town faithful. Boston rapped out 10 hits for the night.

The win went to Jonathan Papelbon(1-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. The
losing pitcher was Gary Glover(5-3) in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 2
walks in 1 and 2/3 innings.

The Nationals score just 2 runs and still win the game? I'm shocked! Jason Simontacchi has a rare good start, allowing just one run through 7. The Nats get their 2 runs in the 3rd on 4 hits, with Ronnie Belliard's single and Austin Kearns' double bringing in each run. The Cubs threaten in the 8th by loading the bases off Luis Ayala, but Jon Rauch gets pinch hitter Jacque Jones to fly out to end the threat. Chad Cordero pitches a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Jason Simontacchi(4-5) and Ted Lilly(8-4) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Simontacchi and the Washington Nationals coming out on top of the
Chicago (NL) Cubs 2 to 1.

Simontacchi gave a fine effort for Washington. He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks
in 6 and 1/3 innings. Simontacchi struckout 7 Chicago (NL) batters. After
the 3rd inning, neither team was able to score.

Simontacchi got help from Chad Cordero who was credited with his 16th save.

The Red Sox are on a remarkable 124 win pace. The major league record for wins in a season is 116, held by the 1906 Cubs and the 2001 Mariners. Neither of those teams won the World Series.

Our hitters look to be pretty similar, but the pitching is where my Sox really excel. 2,88 team ERA to your 4.05. Beckett, Wakefield and Tavarez all seem to be underperforming for you and overperforming for me. In fact, Red Sox starters are a dominating 51-16 with a 2.79 ERA.

The Red Sox complete the 4 game sweep with a 10-0 drubbing of the Rangers. The Sox get 4 runs on 4 hits in the 1st and never look back. They add 6 more when they bat around in the 4th. Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Mike Lowell, Jason Varitek and Jacoby Ellsbury all had 2 hit days. Both of Lowell's hits were RBI doubles, while one of Tek's was an inside-the-park home run.

Kason Gabbard almost goes the distance for the shutout, but gives way to Mike Timlin in the 9th with one out and the bases loaded. Timlin preserves the shutout by getting Victor Diaz to ground into a double play to end the game.

The indomitable Boston Red Sox enjoyed a blow-out, pounding the Texas Rangers
pitchers for 10 while Kason Gabbard(2-0), with relief help from Mike Timlin,
blanked Texas.

Gabbard looked very much in control throughout the night. He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Gabbard
recorded 9 strikeouts seeing his ERA drop from 1.17 to 0.76. The pitchers
took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.

Brandon McCarthy(3-5) took the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 3
hits and 1 walk.

The light-hitting, mediocre pitching Washington Nationals after 81 games. They sit at 40-41. The 4.19 ERA is almost a run better than they are doing in your replay. The starting pitching has been the real weakness - 18-31 with a 4.72 ERA.
