| The Red Sox put a whuppin' on the D-Backs, but the real story of the game is David Ortiz, who becomes the 6th man in AL history and the 16th man in major league history to hit 4 home runs in a game. Ortiz hit home runs on his first 4 trips to the plate, in the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th innings. All but the one in the 6th inning were solo shots. Ortiz walked when he got to the plate in the 8th, at which time I lifted him for a pinch runner and an eventual defensive replacement at 1st, where he was playing because the game was in an NL park. I figured that it would be his last at bat of the day, but the Sox sent 8 men to the plate in the inning and what was his spot actually came up again in the 9th! The Sox ended up with 7 home runs altogether on the day, including 2 by JD Drew, who had none this season before today. Perhaps Drew wanted to show up his brother Stephen, who plays for Arizona? Mike Lowell also went deep in the game. The 7 home runs does not come close to the league record (10, Toronto, 1987) and is one shy of the Red Sox single game record (8, 1977). The Red Sox do tie an odd record, most home runs by the infielders in a game. This is the 5th time that had been accomplished in the AL, and the Red Sox were the last team to do it (in 1950!) The major league record for infielders is 6, done by both the 1954 Milwaukee Braves and the 1978 Montreal Expos. The offense wasn't the whole story though, as Josh Beckett allows just 2 hits through 7 innings to run his record to 11-0. Mike Timlin returns from the DL and contributes a 9-pitch, 2 strikeout inning, but then Kyle Snyder ruins the fun by giving up 3 runs in the 9th. Still, an impressive day all around for the Sox. |

First baseman David Ortiz blasted 4 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Josh Beckett
went 7 strong innings at Chase Field as the impressive Boston Red Sox
embarrassed the Arizona Diamondbacks by the lopsided score of 15 to 3.
Ortiz was a one-man wrecking crew. He delivered a solo blast in the 1st
inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 3rd inning, delivered a
solo blast in the 5th inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 15th of the
season) in the 6th inning. Boston lit up the scoreboard in the 6th inning
when they had 7 runs on 5 hits. For the game Boston out-hit Arizona 16 to 6.
The win was credited to Beckett(11-0) who went 7 innings allowing no runs.
Doug Davis(6-6) was the loser. He allowed 4 homeruns in 5 innings of work.
'Actually, I didn't feel that comfortable at the plate today' Ortiz said after
the game. 'Despite that, I'm happy with the results!
