You might have expected a pitcher's duel between veterans Curt Schilling and Mike Mussina. You would have been wrong. Instead, both starters are gone by the 4th, both teams get into double digits in runs, and it comes down to the last out with the tying runner on 3rd.

After the 1st, I had a good feeling about this game. Schilling put the Yanks down 1-2-3, while the Sox scored 3 runs off a Manny homer. Instead, the Yankees tear apart Schilling for 6 runs in the 2nd. The Sox would get runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out in the bottom of the inning and fail to score, then the Yanks would add on 2 more in the 3rd for the 5 run lead. Instead, Mussina allows 2 singles and a walk to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the 3rd, then the Sox get 4 straight run-scoring plays in which the runners advance one base and the bases remain loaded. (Varitek single, Pena HBP, Crisp single, Lugo walk). With just a one run deficit and Kyle Snyder in the game for the Sox, A-Rod extends his hitting streak to 21 games with a 2 run A-Bomb in the top of the 4th. The Sox pull within 2 with a Youk homer in the bottom of the inning.

The 10-8 score holds until the 7th, when Bobby Abreu strikes what seemed like the death blow off Joel Pineiro with a 2-run homer to make it 12-8. Fast forward to the bottom of the 9th, Scott Proctor on the hill. The Sox get a leadoff single from Manny, Youk strikes out, then Mike Lowell singles to put the tying run in the on deck circle. That's a save situation, and that means Mariano Rivera out of the pen. After 3+ innings the day before, the hope is that Rivera will be worn out, but he starts out with a strikeout of Jason Varitek to bring the Sox to their last out. Eric Hinske singles to score a run, then Coco Crisp comes through with a triple to make it a one run game with the tying run on third! I pinch hit for the awful Julio Lugo with JD Drew, Drew walks but then Dustin Pedroia ends it with a ground ball to the 2nd baseman that ends up being a force play at 2nd.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Coco Crisp robbed Hideki Matsui of a Homerun!

Bobby Abreu cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New York (AL) Yankees
defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 12 to 11 at Fenway Park.

Abreu enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd
inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 11th of the season) in the 7th
inning. Boston made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

The winning pitcher was Kyle Farnsworth(2-0) who allowed 1 run in 3 and 2/3
innings. Mariano Rivera gained credit for his 9th save. Curt Schilling(5-4)
ended up with the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings.
