A typically tense game between the Sox and Yankees ends up going 12 innings before one team can get the winning run across. Fortunately, it was the Red Sox that did so!

The Yankees had gotten 2 runs off Sox starter Tim Wakefield, but the Sox came back with 2 in the bottom of the 6th when Yankees starter Chien Ming-Wang tired. Wang allowed a single to David Ortiz, followed by doubles to Manny and JD Drew. Drew's double scored both Papi and Manny to tie the game. Surprisingly, Torre goes to Mariano Rivera at this point with 2 out in the 6th. Rivera then retires the next 10 batters he faces for 3 1/3 perfect innings on just 31 pitches. The Sox impressive closer was on display as well, as Papelbon entered for the 9th and ended up pitching 2 innings while striking out 5.

Ron Villone got the ball in the 10th for the Yanks, but despite 2 walks the Sox couldn't score. The Sox would get 2 baserunners in the 11th as well off Villone, but couldn't score. Finally in the 12th, the Sox would get a one-out single from Dustin Pedroia, which would bring Scott Proctor out of the bullpen. Proctor would allow a single to Kevin Youkilis, walk Ortiz to load the bases, then Manny gets a single up the middle to score the winning run!

An interesting play in the 7th that doesn't show up in the box score - with one out, Bobby Abreu hits a triple off Tim Wakefield. Now you figure the Yanks can get a runner in from 3rd with one out. Instead, Josh Phelps lines the ball to Mike Lowell and he steps on third for the inning ending double play!
