The Red Sox put an absolute shellacking on the Giants in game 2 of their interleague series. While the bats were putting up double digits in hits and runs scored, Daisuke Matsuzaka took a no-hitter into the 7th, when Bengie Molina singled with one out. That was followed by another single, but Dice-K would bear down and not allow another hit for the rest of the game, his 2nd shutout of the season. Kevin Youkilis was 2 for 5 with a homer and 4 RBI, Alex Cora was 3 for 4 with a triple, and even Big Papi had a triple!

Daisuke Matsuzaka carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning and Kevin Youkilis
slammed a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Boston Red Sox crushed the San
Francisco Giants 10 to 0.

The Boston fans enjoyed the offense provided by Youkilis. He belted a
three-run homer (his 10th of the season) in the 3rd inning and stroked a
one-base hit knocking in a run in the 7th inning. Boston dominated
offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Matsuzaka(8-3). The right-handed
Matsuzaka had his no-hit bid broken up by Bengie Molina who singled with one
out in the 7th inning. Matt Cain(4-8) was the loser. He was hit hard and
gave up 10 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Boston continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 50-17. They are 9-1 in their last ten games. With the loss, the San
Francisco ballclub's record is 26-41, worst in the division.

Even though they are now in their third season in Washington, the Nats still play a series every year against their former countrymen Blue Jays during interleague play. Roy Halladay dominated the Nats for the first 8 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 run on a Ryan Zimmerman homer. The Blue Jays bullpen needed just 3 outs to take away a 3-1 win, but instead they allow 12 men to come to the plate and allow the Nats to score 6 runs on 7 hits.

The Nats spread the offense around, as 8 batters got a hit and all 7 runs were scored by a different man. 6 different men had 1 RBI, the missing RBI was because a run scored on an error by Jays shortstop John McDonald.

In a dramatic ending the Washington Nationals staged a comeback and held on to
win over the Toronto Blue Jays by the count of 7 to 3.

Washington scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning scoring 6
runners on 7 hits. Washington finished with 10 hits in the victory.

The victory was credited to Chad Cordero(1-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. The losing pitcher was Jeremy Accardo(4-3) in relief.

After the game, it took a long while before John Gibbons emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the Washington locker room.'

The Red Sox welcome the San Francisco Giants to Fenway Park with a 13 hit attack that leads to an 11-5 victory. The Sox beat them down with extra base hits, 5 doubles and 2 homers. JD Drew had one of each and was a triple shy of the cycle in a 3 for 5, 4 RBI day. His 3 run homer in the 8th was the knockout punch. Manny contributed a 2 run shot, and Big Papi and Mike Lowell both had 2 doubles. Julian Tavarez continues to pitch well enough to win, 6 IP and 3 runs allowed this time out for his 7th win.

How did visitor Barry Bonds fare in his first visit to Fenway Park? 0 for 3 with a walk. He ended the game with a deep fly to center, unfortunately (for him) right to Coco Crisp.

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Dave Roberts robbed Kevin Youkilis of an extra base hit.

The Boston Red Sox had very little trouble at Fenway Park downing the San
Francisco Giants. The score was 11 to 5.

J.D. Drew made sure the Boston fans enjoyed themselves. He laced a base-hit
in the 1st inning, doubled plating a run in the 6th inning and belted a
three-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 8th inning. San Francisco was
out-hit by Boston, 13 hits to 9.

The win went to Julian Tavarez(7-3) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Barry
Zito(2-9) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving
up 8 runs in 7 innings.

The winning ways continue for Boston. They now have a record of 9-1 in recent
days. San Francisco has a record of 26-40, worst in the division after the
loss.

The final score is deceiving in this one, which was basically all Orioles. The O's batted around in both of the first 2 innings and had an early 9-0 lead. They hit 3 home runs in the 1st off Nats starter Jason Simontacchi. The Nats took advantage of some sloppy Orioles fielding in the late innings to score 3 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th, but could never get the tying run closer than the on deck circle.

Left fielder Jay Gibbons had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Camden Yards as the Baltimore
Orioles beat the Washington Nationals by the count of 10 to 7.

Baltimore drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
when they scored 5 runs on 5 hits. The key at-bat was by Aubrey Huff who
made the crowd happy when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 5th
of the season). For the game Baltimore out-hit Washington 17 to 7.

The win went to Jeremy Guthrie(6-2) who allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Jamie Walker was credited with his 4th save. Jason Simontacchi(3-3) absorbed
the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 1 and 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox get a clutch homer from Mike Lowell in the 8th and hold on for the 7-5 comeback win over the Rockies. Josh Beckett started the game for the Sox and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits through 7 innings, the bulk of the damage coming when Matt Holliday hit one over the Green Monster with 2 men on in the 5th. Beckett was on the hook for what would be his first loss of the year, but the Sox rallied in the 8th with Lowell's homer being the capper. Hideki Okajima gets the win, deservedly so after entering with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 8th and then getting a strikeout and a popout to end the threat. Jonathan Papelbon gets the save, his 20th for the year.

In a tight game it was the Boston Red Sox 7, the Colorado Rockies 5 at Fenway
Park.

Boston came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
with 3 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Manny Ramirez started
the attack as he slapped a single. Kevin Youkilis was next and he drew a
walk. Mike Lowell then lofted a three-run bomb (his 9th of the season).
Boston had 8 hits for the night.

The victory was credited to Hideki Okajima(2-0) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 20th save. Manny Corpas(4-2)
was the losing pitcher in relief.

The Red Sox win behind 8 strong innings from Curt Schilling. Paps gets the save, despite giving up a leadoff homer to Todd Helton in the 9th. The Rockies allowed just 6 hits, but also issued 6 walks, including 3 to David Ortiz. One of those Ortiz walks was in the 4th, and was followed by a 2 run homer from Manny Ramirez. The Sox added 2 more in the 6th when they got a walk, a single, a walk, and a single to start off the inning.

Ortiz ends up with a strange line for the game: 1 AB, 2 R, 0 H, 0 RBI

In a tight game it was the dominant Boston Red Sox 4, the Colorado Rockies 2
at Fenway Park.

Curt Schilling(7-4) gave Boston a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just
5 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings lowering his ERA to 3.63. Both teams finished
the game with 6 hits.

Jonathan Papelbon earned his 19th save. The losing pitcher was Josh
Fogg(2-3). He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.

The Nationals play a wild one in Baltimore, where it takes 10 innings and 8 lead changes before the Nats come out victorious by an 11-6 score. How often do you see FIVE blown saves in a game???

The Nats started out slow, not scoring in the first 5 innings off O's starter Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera gets pulled in the 6th after a leadoff single by Ryan Zimmerman, then the Nats get 2 more singles off reliever John Parrish to load the bases. They would eventually get 2 runs in the inning to tie the game. The O's retake the lead in the bottom of the 6th, but the Nats come back to make it 4-3 off a Ryan Zimmerman 2 run homer in the 7th. The O's tie it again with a run in the 7th, then the Nats get it back in the top of the 8th when Ryan Church goes deep to lead off the inning.

In the bottom of the 8th, lefty Ray King gets the first out but then I go to Chad Cordero for the potential 5 out save. Jay Payton hits a ground ball to Zimmerman, but reaches on an error. Cordero uncorks a wild pitch and then gets taken deep by Melvin Mora to make it 6-5, Orioles. Cordero would get the 2nd out, then allow a double before giving way to Jon Rauch who gets Brian Roberts to ground out for the 3rd out.

In the top of the 9th, Cristian Guzman leads it off with a walk off O's closer Chris Ray. Ray strikes out Zimmerman and Dmitri Young and it looked bleak for the Nats, but Austin Kearns comes through with the clutch 2 out double which scores Guzman. Ryan Church is intentionally walked, but both runners are stranded when Brian Schneider strikes out. Rauch stays in the game and has an effortless 9th, sending us to extra innings. The Nats come out swinging, getting 5 straight hits to start it off and eventually scoring 5 runs, all off Ray. Jesus Colome comes in to get the O's in the bottom of the 10th, and the Nats win!

Here's the Nats 10th.

In a lop-sided win the Washington Nationals ripped the Baltimore Orioles by a
11 to 6 count.

The score was tied at 6 after nine. Finally, Washington pulled the game out
in the 10th inning. The highlight belonged to Ryan Zimmerman who deflated
the spirits of the home town crowd when he doubled clearing all three ducks
off the pond. It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 6
times.

The victory was credited to Jon Rauch(2-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Chris Ray(2-3) was hit with the loss in relief. He got hit
hard, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.

'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Zimmerman said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'

The Red Sox welcome the Colorado Rockies to Fenway Park, and the Rockies show their gratitude by taking Tim Wakfield deep twice, including a 3 run shot by Yorvit Torrealba that put the Rockies ahead for good in the 4th. Wakefield ends up going 6 runs but allowing 6 hits and 6 runs. The Sox did bat around in the 3rd and come up with 4 runs, but a 9th inning rally fell short when David Ortiz, representing the go-ahead run, walked to load the bases before Manny grounded out with the bases loaded to end the game.

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Kyle Snyder robbed Yorvit Torrealba of a base hit.

In a good matchup it was the Colorado Rockies 6, the Boston Red Sox 4 at
Fenway Park.

Colorado scored 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning. After an out was
recorded, Ryan Spilborghs got things going when he slapped a single. Troy
Tulowitzki came to the plate and drew a walk. Yorvit Torrealba then rifled a
three-run blast (his 3rd of the season). Both teams ended up with 9 hits on
the night.

The win went to Aaron Cook(8-5) who allowed 4 runs in 8 innings. Cook got
relief help from Manny Corpas who gained credit for his 7th save. The loss
was charged to Tim Wakefield(7-3).

'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Cook said.

Despite just 5 hits in the game, the Nationals come away with a 2-1 victory to salvage the final game of a 3 game series in Minnesota. Juan Rincon was the goat in this game for the Twins, entering the game with the bases loaded in the 6th and walking pinch hitter Nook Logan to tie the game. Then in the 7th, Rincon grooved one to Ryan Langerhans, which broke the tie when it cleared the baggie in right center. Rincon can partially blame starter Boof Bonser, who walked Felipe Lopez to start the 6th, and reliever Carmen Cali who walked Dmitri Young and allowed a single to Austin Kearns to set the table for Logan's walk and RBI.

Starter Mike Bacsik pitched well enough to win, but reliever Saul Rivera walks away with the W after 2 1/3 IP and just one hit allowed. Chad Cordero got the save with an effortless 9th.

Fun fact: The Nats scored 2 runs in all 3 games against the Twins.

The Washington Nationals edged the Minnesota Twins at Metrodome by the score
of 2 to 1.

Washington tallied 1 run in the top of the 7th inning. Chad Cordero earned
the save with a perfect ninth, his 13th save.

Saul Rivera(3-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Juan
Rincon(1-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 1 hit
in 2/3 of an inning.

With this win, Washington has a 34-29 record. They have been 5-5 lately.
With this loss, Minnesota has a 5-5 record of late, 31-30 overall.

The Red Sox have an easy time of it again, completing the series sweep of the Diamondbacks with an 8-2 win. This one could have been a pitcher's duel between Daisuke Matsuzaka and Randy Johnson; instead, Johnson allows 6 hits and 5 walks and is out of the game with just one out in the 2nd. He would end up being charged with 7 runs. Matsuzaka would allow 2 1st inning runs, but would end up going 6 before getting into pitch count trouble, mostly due to 6 walks.

The Diamondbacks had just 3 hits in the game. They got a one out homer in the first from Chris Young and an RBI single from Stephen Drew, then did not get another hit until the 9th when pinch hitter Miguel Montero got a single with one out off Hideki Okajima.

The Red Sox tablesetters did a good job getting on - Dustin Pedroia (2 hits, 1 BB), Coco Crisp (2 hits, 1 BB) and Kevin Youkilis (1 hit, 2 BB).

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Daisuke Matsuzaka robbed Stephen Drew of a base hit.

Dustin Pedroia had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox beat the Arizona
Diamondbacks by a score of 8 to 2.

Daisuke Matsuzaka(7-3) delivered a fine performance for Boston. He went 6
innings surrendering 2 hits and 6 walks. Matsuzaka chalked up 7 strikeouts.
Arizona was out-hit by Boston, 10 hits to 3.

Randy Johnson(2-4) was the losing pitcher. By surrending 7 runs in 1 and 1/3
innings his ERA jumped from 3.14 to 4.25. Boston extended their winning
streak to 6 games. 'We're running on all cylinders now', said Terry Francona.
'I probably shouldn't change a thing and let the guys continue to put up the
wins.'

I feel fortunate that the Nats even got 2 runs off Johan Santana, who gets his 8th win of the year. After allowing 2 runs in the 7th, Santana retired the last 10 men he faced, including 5 consecutive strikeouts to end the game and bring his total to 10 for the day. Levale Speigner held his own by allowing just 3 hits in his 6 innings of work, but unfortunately for him the 3 hits were in a row and the third one cleared the fence off Joe Mauer's bat.

Johan Santana whiffed 10 batters as the Minnesota Twins defeated the
Washington Nationals by the score of 4 to 2 at Metrodome.

Santana(8-2) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Washington
hitters. He allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Washington went
down without a fight in the 9th.

Levale Speigner(2-5) was the losing pitcher. Santana was obviously very
pleased with his performance in the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one
of those games where everything worked. My arm felt great, heck, I could
have pitched another two or three innings. I only hope that I can do it
again next time out!'

No four homer game this time, in fact no Red Sox homers, but a 4 run 6th inning is enough to carry the Sox to a 6-2 win in Arizona. Former Red Sox pitcher Brandon Lyon was the catalyst, entering the game with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out then allowing a single to load the bases and a Coco Crisp double to score 2 runs to break the 2-2 tie. He would then commit a balk which would score another runner, and Big Papi would hit a sac fly to score the 6th run.

Julian Tavarez once again pitches well enough to win and is proving to be a valuable member of the starting rotation. His 6 wins equal the total of teammates Curt Schilling and Daisuke Matsuzaka, who both make a LOT more money than Julian.

Oh and check out who hit a homer for the DBacks, his 5th of the year...Micah Owings!

Matt Guerrier pitched 4 strong innings at Metrodome as the Minnesota Twins
belted the Washington Nationals by the count of 13 to 2.

Joe Mauer provided much of the offense. He cracked a solo homerun (his 2nd of
the season) in the 5th inning, ripped a base-knock bringing in a run in the
7th inning and singled which was good for two runs in the 7th inning. For
the game Minnesota out-hit Washington 18 to 5.

The win went to Carlos Silva(8-3) who allowed 2 runs in 5 innings. Guerrier
earned his 3rd save. Jason Simontacchi(3-2) was hit with the loss.

The Red Sox put a whuppin' on the D-Backs, but the real story of the game is David Ortiz, who becomes the 6th man in AL history and the 16th man in major league history to hit 4 home runs in a game. Ortiz hit home runs on his first 4 trips to the plate, in the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th innings. All but the one in the 6th inning were solo shots. Ortiz walked when he got to the plate in the 8th, at which time I lifted him for a pinch runner and an eventual defensive replacement at 1st, where he was playing because the game was in an NL park. I figured that it would be his last at bat of the day, but the Sox sent 8 men to the plate in the inning and what was his spot actually came up again in the 9th!

The Sox ended up with 7 home runs altogether on the day, including 2 by JD Drew, who had none this season before today. Perhaps Drew wanted to show up his brother Stephen, who plays for Arizona? Mike Lowell also went deep in the game. The 7 home runs does not come close to the league record (10, Toronto, 1987) and is one shy of the Red Sox single game record (8, 1977). The Red Sox do tie an odd record, most home runs by the infielders in a game. This is the 5th time that had been accomplished in the AL, and the Red Sox were the last team to do it (in 1950!) The major league record for infielders is 6, done by both the 1954 Milwaukee Braves and the 1978 Montreal Expos.

The offense wasn't the whole story though, as Josh Beckett allows just 2 hits through 7 innings to run his record to 11-0. Mike Timlin returns from the DL and contributes a 9-pitch, 2 strikeout inning, but then Kyle Snyder ruins the fun by giving up 3 runs in the 9th. Still, an impressive day all around for the Sox.

First baseman David Ortiz blasted 4 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Josh Beckett
went 7 strong innings at Chase Field as the impressive Boston Red Sox
embarrassed the Arizona Diamondbacks by the lopsided score of 15 to 3.

Ortiz was a one-man wrecking crew. He delivered a solo blast in the 1st
inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 3rd inning, delivered a
solo blast in the 5th inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 15th of the
season) in the 6th inning. Boston lit up the scoreboard in the 6th inning
when they had 7 runs on 5 hits. For the game Boston out-hit Arizona 16 to 6.

The win was credited to Beckett(11-0) who went 7 innings allowing no runs.
Doug Davis(6-6) was the loser. He allowed 4 homeruns in 5 innings of work.

'Actually, I didn't feel that comfortable at the plate today' Ortiz said after
the game. 'Despite that, I'm happy with the results!

The Red Sox take 3 out of 4 from the A's as they win the getaway game, 4-2. Curt Schilling wasn't particularly sharp, but pitched well enough to walk away with the win. Brendan Donnelly and Jonathan Papelbon pitch stellar relief to get the last nine outs.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Sox spread it out with 10 hits over 7 innings off A's starter Joe Blanton, and scored their 4 runs in 4 separate innings. Mike Lowell had 2 hits and 2 runs scored, while Alex Cora also had 2 hits in a rare start.
