The Nationals offense starts firing in the late innings, turning a 3-1 deficit into a 7-3 win. Nats starter Micah Bowie allowed 3 runs in the Dodger 4th, but partially has the Nats' defense to blame as both Brian Schneider and Ryan Zimmerman make errors. Ryan Church eventually gets the Nats back in the game with a game-tying 2 run homer in the 7th following an Austin Kearns single, then the Nats break it open with 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk in the 8th. Zimmerman led off with a double, then was knocked in by Dmitri Young's single. After 2 strikeouts, Schneider walked and Nook Logan singled to knock in another run. Ronnie Belliard pinch hit for the pitcher and contributed a 2-run single. Chad Cordero allowed 2 singles to start off the 9th, but then got a Nomar Garciaparra fly out and a Jeff Kent GIDP to end the game.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers by a score of 7
to 3 at RFK STADIUM.
Washington had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning when
they tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Ronnie Belliard who
made the crowd come alive when he laced a single plating two runs.
Washington had a total of 8 hits for the game.
Saul Rivera(2-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Chad
Billingsley(1-1) was given the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 runs and 4
hits in 1 inning.
This one was ugly. The Dodgers pile on 10 runs and 13 hits off the Nationals. Derek Lowe goes the distance for LA, allowing just 5 hits and 1 run. The one Nationals run was the lone bright spot for the game, an exciting inside the park home run by Cristian Guzman. The Dodgers #3 and 4 hitters did most of the damage - Nomar was 3 for 5 with a double and 4 RBI, and Jeff Kent was 4 for 5 with 2 HR and 4 RBI.

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Andre Ethier robbed Ryan Langerhans of a Homerun!
Jeff Kent smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Derek Lowe delivered 9 solid
innings as the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers defeated the Washington Nationals by
the score of 10 to 1 at RFK STADIUM.
Kent enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He blasted a solo shot in the 4th
inning, lined a base-hit in the 5th inning, popped a two-run clout over the
fence (his 6th of the season) in the 7th inning and delivered a single
plating a run in the 8th inning. Los Angeles(NL) managed 13 hits in their
victory.
Lowe(3-5) allowed 1 run on the game. Mike Bacsik(0-1) absorbed the loss. By
surrending 4 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings his ERA jumped from 5.56 to 6.32.
Kent was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball
real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off.
That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'
The Indians eke out a win to prevent the sweep in the third and final game of a 3 game series in Boston. Despite outhitting the Indians by an 11-9 margin, the Sox couldn't push across any more runs after the Indians took the lead in the 7th on a Kelly Shoppach double. The teams were tied at 3 before that tiebreaker thanks to 3 run homers on both sides - Jhonny Peralta in the 2nd for the Tribe, and Manny Ramirez for the Sox in the 3rd.

Jhonny Peralta hit a homerun and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the Cleveland
Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 4 to 3.
Cleveland went ahead for good in the 7th inning scoring a single run on 2
hits. Boston threatened in the 9th but Cleveland was able to put down the
rally.
Paul Byrd(3-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Byrd got help from Joe Borowski who was credited with his
7th save. Daisuke Matsuzaka(5-3) suffered the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 8
hits in 7 innings.
'After the stretch we have been through lately, this victory is especially
sweet' offered Eric Wedge. Now, we just have to make this the norm - not the
exception!'
The Nationals must like the home cooking, as they take game 1 of a 9 game homestand to get back on the winning track after a 2-5 road trip through Cincy and St. Louis. The Nats spread out the offense, scoring a single run in 5 separate innings, each one scored by a different player and each one knocked in by a different player! Jason Simontacchi allowed 10 hits to the Dodgers, but he spread them out well enough over his 6 innings of work to result in just 2 runs. He gets his 2nd win of the season, while Chad Cordero gets his 12th save. This is Cordero's 9th straight appearance without allowing a run, so maybe he is fully cured from whatever caused him to allow 13 runs over 5 appearances in late April.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers by a score of 5
to 2 at RFK STADIUM.
Jason Simontacchi(2-1) was solid if not spectacular. He allowed 10 hits and no
walks in 6 innings. Washington rapped out 10 hits for the night.
Chad Cordero recorded the save, his 12th. Brad Penny(4-4) was hit with the
loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 3 walks.
The Red Sox were swinging for the fences in this one while the Indians were swinging at air. Josh Beckett returns from a DL stint with another stellar performance, striking out 14 Indians. Beckett has made 9 starts this season, and today earned his 9th win. The Sox were powered by 2 home runs by Jason Varitek, another one from Kevin Youkilis, a 2-RBI triple from JD Drew, and good days from the table setters (Pedroia and Crisp) at the top of the order. Old friend Trot Nixon went 3 for 4 with a triple for the Indians in the loss.

Josh Beckett reeled off a total of 14 strikeouts and catcher Jason Varitek
blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox beat
the Cleveland Indians by the count of 8 to 2.
Varitek enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' in the 2nd inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 6th of the
season) in the 3rd inning. Boston ended up with 12 hits for the game while
Cleveland had 7.
Beckett(9-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 2
runs. Jeremy Sowers(3-6) was the loser. He served up 3 gopher balls in 5 and
2/3 innings.
'Everything felt great' Beckett said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody tonight.'
Hideki Okajima played the role of "win burglar" in this eventual 2-1 win over the Indians. Curt Schilling allowed just 2 hits through the first 7 innings, but was already over 100 pitches when he started the 8th by allowing a double to Ryan Garko. Okajima enters with the 1-0 lead and quicky induces a ground out for the first out of the inning, but then hits Grady Sizemore to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Casey Blake can't come through and pops out, but Travis Hafner gets the RBI single to tie the game. Victor Martinez grounds out with runners on 2nd and 3rd to end the inning. In the bottom of the 8th, Coco Crisp leads off by striking out before Kevin Youkilis reaches 1st on an error by Blake. A Manny walk sends Youk to 2nd, and JD Drew comes through with a rare clutch hit to score Youk with the go-ahead run. Mike Lowell is up next, but he can't continue the rally and grounds into a double play. After re-establishing the one run lead, the Sox bring in Paps for the 9th and it's academic at that point as he earns his 16th save.

Right fielder J.D. Drew had 3 base hits as the Boston Red Sox outscored the
Cleveland Indians 2 to 1.
The game was won by Boston with a run in the 8th inning. After an out was
recorded, Kevin Youkilis reached on an error. Manny Ramirez stepped up next
and he drew a walk. Drew then lined a base-hit scoring the run. Jonathan
Papelbon relieved and was untouched by Cleveland as he recorded the save, his
16th.
Hideki Okajima(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Aaron
Fultz(2-2) was hit with the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he
did not allow an earned run in his 2 and 1/3 innings of work.
The Cardinals take the Nationals for the third straight game, completing the series sweep. The Cards took the lead in the 2nd when starter Adam Wainwright helped his cause with an RBI single, then added 3 more in the 6th when Albert Pujols went deep off Jesus Colome. The Nats would get isolated runs in the 7th and 8th, but it wasn't enough.

Adam Wainwright had 3 base hits as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the
Washington Nationals by a score of 8 to 3 at Busch Stadium.
Wainwright(3-5) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 6
and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 4.83 to 4.60. Overall St. Louis
out-hit Washington 14 to 7.
Wainwright was helped out by Jason Isringhausen who recorded his 12th save.
Matt Chico(6-3) took the loss. He pitched 5 innings giving up 7 hits and 3
walks.
The Red Sox take the rubber game from the Rangers by a 9-5 score. The Sox slugged away, even without David Ortiz, who had a day off. They had 5 doubles, a triple, and a homer. New leadoff hitter Dustin Pedroia proved that he belongs in that spot with a 4 for 5 day with 2 doubles, while Coco Crisp singled and walked twice from the 2nd spot in the order. Combine that with Youk's 3 RBI in the 3 hole and Manny's homer from the cleanup position, and it's easy to pile up the runs. It got closer late when JC Romero and Brendan Donnelly tried to give it away, but the Sox big guns (Oki and Paps) take the 8th and 9th to nail down the win. Julian Tavarez doesn't get out of the 6th, but pitched well enough to earn the win.

The Texas Rangers put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning and easily
topped the Boston Red Sox; the final score was 10 to 4.
Brandon McCarthy(3-4) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 5 hits and 2
walks in 8 innings reducing his ERA from 4.87 to 4.30. Texas banged out 10
hits on the night.
The losing pitcher was Daisuke Matsuzaka(5-2). He was knocked around,
surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings.
What a wild ninth inning in this one! The Nats staked a 2-0 early lead that was erased by a Brandon Phillips 2-run homer in the 4th, then the Reds took the lead on a Ken Griffey Jr. homer in the 6th and added to their lead with an Adam Dunn solo shot in the 8th. That brings us to the 9th, which the Nats entered down by a 4-2 score. Former Nat Mike Stanton was on the mound. He entered in the 8th to face lefty Robert Fick when the Nats had runners on 1st and 2nd, and got the out. The pitcher was due up first, so I pinch hit with Ronnie Belliard, but he grounded out. Felipe Lopez was up next and he doubled. Cristian Guzman singled to score Lopez, which made it a one-run deficit and brought Jared Burton from the 'pen. Ryan Zimmerman lined out to 2nd, and the Nats are down to their last out. Ryan Langerhans extends the rally by hitting a single and moving Guzman to 2nd. Former Red Austin Kearns was up next, and he singled in the tying run! Ryan Church was intentionally walked to load the bases, and the Reds went to the bullpen again for Brad Salmon to face Brian Schneider. Salmon uncorks a wild pitch, scoring the go-ahead run! Schneider is then intentionally walked to re-load the bases, but Fick grounds out to end the Nats half of the inning. Not to be outdone, the Reds rally in the bottom of the inning off closer Chad Cordero. Ryan Freel walks to lead things off, then Juan Castro bunts to advance Freel to 2nd. With 1st open, I intentionally walk Griffey Jr. Cordero then walks Brandon Phillips as well to load the bases for Jeff Conine with just one out. Conine grounds to short, and Lopez fires the ball home for the 2nd out and then Schneider throws to 1st for the game ending double play! The Nats salvage a series split with the Reds and maintain a 1st place tie in the NL East with the Mets. Jesus Colome gets the win, while Cordero gets his 11th save despite the 3 walks in the inning.

In a dramatic ending the Washington Nationals staged a comeback and held on to
win over the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 5 to 4.
Washington had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 4
hits. After an out was recorded, Felipe Lopez got things rolling when he
doubled. Cristian Guzman was next and he lined a one-base hit resulting in a
run. One out later, Ryan Langerhans stepped in and he smacked a single.
Austin Kearns was up next and he stroked a single plating another run.
Kearns took second on the throw. Ryan Church stepped into the box and was
walked intentionally to load the bases. Brad Salmon then unleashed a wild
pitch scoring the final run of the inning. Washington ended up with 14 hits
for the game while Cincinnati had 11.
The win went to Jesus Colome(4-3) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings. Chad
Cordero earned his 11th save. Jared Burton(0-2) was charged with the loss in
relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Pete Mackanin was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in
the mood for questions, but I'm sure Manny Acta will be glad to talk about
the game as long as you have questions to ask.'
The Nationals lose a close one in Cincinnati when the Reds get 2 runs off Saul Rivera in the 8th. This one looked like it was going to be all Reds early, as they get 5 runs in the 3rd off Nats starter Jason Simontacchi. Instead, the Nats claw back with 2 runs in the 4th, 1 in the 5th, and 2 in the 6th. The longball was a big part of this game as the Reds get a 3 run shot from Scott Hatteberg and a 2 run shot from Adam Dunn in their 5 run innings, while the Nats got solo shots from Ryan Zimmerman and Austin Kearns in the 4th and a 2 run shot from Ryan Church in the 6th. Rivera hit Ryan Freel and walked Hatteberg with 2 outs in the 8th, then allowed a single to Ken Griffey Jr. to break the tie and a double to Brandon Phillips to make it 7-5 Reds. The Nats would get one back in the 9th, but Ryan Church would line out with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the game.

16,529 fans were treated to a fine game at Great American Bpk as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds won by the
slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.
Cincinnati had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2
runs on 2 hits. After two were out Ryan Freel started the attack as he was
hit by a pitch. Scott Hatteberg came next and he drew a walk. Ken Griffey
Jr then banged out a single bringing in a run. Brandon Phillips followed and
he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Washington threatened in the
9th but Cincinnati was able to put down the rally.
Todd Coffey(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 inning. David
Weathers earned his 8th save. Saul Rivera(1-1) suffered the loss in relief.
He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.
The Red Sox suffer an ugly loss in the Bronx at the hands of the Yankees. This one was out of hand early, as the Yankees had 3 home runs off Curt Schilling before there was an out in the 2nd. In fact, if not for a great catch by Coco Crisp off a Matsui blast, it would have been 4 homers! Schilling settles down a bit, but ends up allowing 6 runs over his 5 innings of work. JC Romero and Kyle Snyder are little relief, but it doesn't matter as Andy Pettitte was dealing a 4 hit shutout.

WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Coco Crisp robbed Hideki Matsui of a Homerun!
Jorge Posada blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI and Andy Pettitte went 9 strong
innings at Yankee Stadium as the New York (AL) Yankees, running on all
cylinders, ripped the Boston Red Sox by a large 10 to 0 margin.
New York (AL) took the lead off Curt Schilling in the first inning as they
scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. That was all Pettitte(7-1) needed. New York
(AL) had 15 hits for the night.
The loss was charged to Schilling(5-3). He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of
work.
The Nats can't capture that recent comeback magic in this one, and instead fall to the Reds by a 2-1 score. They loaded the bases in the 9th for recent hero Ryan Zimmerman, but he hit a fly ball to center field to end the game. The deciding run for the Reds ends up being a 6th inning home run by Ken Griffey off Nats starter Matt Chico, who took the loss.
