The Nationals fall to the Braves in a close one in DC. This game seemed to play fast, and the time on the box score seems to support that - a brisk 2:23. The Braves did all their damage in the 2nd, when Andruw Jones led off with a single and advanced to 2nd on an error by pitcher Jason Bergmann. He then advanced to 3rd on a ground out, scored on a Jeff Francoeur single, and Francoeur scored when Scott Thorman cleared the fences. The Nats would get 2 isolated runs in the 4th and 5th, but could never push that tying run across. In fact, the only Nats baserunner after the 5th would be Austin Kearns, who got on the painful way in the 9th when he was hit by a pitch. He was immediately erased on a Ryan Church GIDP that ended the game.

One run was the difference at RFK STADIUM as the Atlanta Braves defeated the
Washington Nationals 3 to 2.

Atlanta delivered all the runs required in the 2nd inning scoring 3 runs using
3 hits. Andruw Jones started the inning off right when he laced a one-base
hit, and an error was also committed. After an out was recorded, Jeff
Francoeur came up and he hit a single knocking in a run. Scott Thorman then
cracked a two-run shot (his 4th of the season). That early scoring held up.
Atlanta and Washington each finished the night with 6 hits.

John Smoltz(4-3) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Peter Moylan
got the save, his 2nd. The losing pitcher was Jason Bergmann(1-4). He
pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 walks.

Atlanta now has a record of 19-19. With the loss, the Washington ballclub's
record is 23-15.
