The Red Sox come back to tie this one in the top of the 9th, but then give it away in the bottom of the 9th. Alex Cora made it 5 to 5 in the top of the 9th with a 2-run double following back-to-back singles by Coco Crisp and Jason Varitek. In the bottom of the inning, Vernon Wells met Brendan Donnelly with a ground ball that was misplayed by SS Julio Lugo, resulting in Wells reaching first. This was followed by a Troy Glaus single which moved Wells to third. Donnelly then struck out Frank Thomas, which brough up the lefty Lyle Overbay and brought lefty Hideki Okajima out of the Sox bullpen. Unfortunately, Overbay zipped one into right to score Wells with the game's winning run. The run is unearned, but Donnelly takes the loss.
