Hell of a 2007 debut for Sox starter Kason Gabbard, who took a no-hitter into the 7th inning and ended up with a 3-hit, complete game shutout. Matt Diaz was the spoiler, hitting a single with 2 out in the 7th. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis proved to be a good combination at the top of the order, with Pedroia scoring 2 runs and Youk knocking 2 in.

Kason Gabbard took a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the Boston Red Sox
defeated the Atlanta Braves by a score of 4 to 0 at Fenway
Park.
Gabbard(1-0) escaped virtually unscathed against the Atlanta hitters. He
surrendered only 3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. The left-handed Gabbard
lost his chance for a no-hitter when Matt Diaz singled with two outs in the
7th inning. Boston had a total of 7 hits for the game.
Tim Hudson(6-3) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 7
innings.
The Braves earn a split on the day as they take game 2 of a doubleheader with the Red Sox. This one was all John Smoltz, as he goes 8 2/3 and allows just one run. The Red Sox use Devern Hansack for the fill-in start, and he allows 4 hits and 6 walks in 4 1/3. The 2-run homer was Hansack's nemesis today - he allowed one to Scott Thorman in the 4th, then another to Brian McCann in the 5th before being pulled. The Braves and Red Sox have some modern rivalry to go along with the historical rivarly of once playing in the same city; the Braves beat the Red Sox in my 2004 SOM World Series.

At Fenway Park the Atlanta Braves outscored the Boston Red Sox 4 to
1.
Atlanta took the lead for keeps in the top of the 4th inning scoring 2 runners
on 1 hit. The big moment was provided by Scott Thorman who helped quiet the
crowd when he cracked a two-run shot (his 5th of the season). Atlanta banged
out 7 hits on the night.
The win was credited to John Smoltz(5-3) who went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 1
run. Oscar Villarreal earned the save, his 2nd. Devern Hansack(0-1) was the
losing pitcher.
This one was basically 2 separate games. In the first four innings, the Orioles smacked around Nats starter Mike Bacsik, getting 4 runs off 7 hits. At the same time, O's starter Jeremy Guthrie was holding the Nats hitless. That all changed in the bottom of the 5th, when the Nats got 3 quick runs on an Austin Kearns homer, a Ryan Church double, and a Brian Schneider homer. Then in the 7th, those same 3 batters would get the rally started with a HBP, a single, and a double to be followed by a Nook Logan single and stolen base and a Ronnie Belliard pinch hit single that was misplayed by O's SS Miguel Tejada. That gave the Nats a 7-4 lead, and Jesus Colome and Chad Cordero would hold it for a hold and the save, respectively.

WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Brian Roberts robbed Ryan Zimmerman of a base hit.
Catcher Brian Schneider hit a homerun and had 3 RBI at RFK STADIUM where the
Washington Nationals beat the Baltimore Orioles 7 to 4.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Schneider. He lifted one out of the park for a two run home run
(his 4th of the season) in the 5th inning, doubled scoring a run in the 7th
inning and tripled in the 8th inning. Washington banged out 9 hits on the
night.
Winston Abreu(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Chad
Cordero got the save, his 10th. Danys Baez(2-2) absorbed the loss in relief.
The Washington ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 26-17. Dave
Trembley was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep
losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
The Red Sox start out interleague play with a 9th inning comeback and winning a game with some NL-style small ball. The Sox got into an early hole thanks to a very ineffective Daisuke Matsuzaka, who gave up 9 hits and 7 runs through 3 and 1/3, getting knocked out when Kelly Johnson and Chipper Jones both took him deep. Kyle Snyder entered with a 7-3 deficit and pitched 3 2/3 impressive innings of one hit ball, during which time the Red Sox made it 7-5 on a Mike Lowell double with 2 men on. JC Romero pitched a scoreless 8th and the Sox loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but JD Drew grounded to short to end the inning. Joel Pineiro gave the Sox a 1-2-3 9th and then the rally started. Lowell single, Varitek walk, Crisp fielder's choice followed by a steal, and then Julio Lugo comes through with a single to score 2 runs and tie the game! This was Lugo's first game in the 9 hole...I figured it didn't make sense for a .350+ hitter to be hitting 9th and a sub-.200 hitter to be hitting leadoff, so I swapped Lugo and Pedroia about a month earlier than the real 2007 Sox did. Of course, the real 2007 Dustin Pedroia started out much more slowly, hitting around .250 in mid-May. Back to the action...Lugo gets caught trying to steal 2nd for the 2nd out, but the aforementioned Pedroia walks. Youk gets an infield single which is misplayed to put runners on 2nd and 3rd for Big Papi, who is intentionally walked. That loads them for Manny, but he grounds out to send us to extra frames. Fast forward to the bottom of the 11th...Coco Crisp leads off with a walk, the 8th of the game for the Sox hitters. Julio Lugo again comes through, this time with a single to send Coco to 3rd. So with a good bunter up in Pedroia and a fast runner on third in Crisp, should I dare try the squeeze play? I do, and Pedroia lays it down to perfection to score Crisp with the game winner!

37,791 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox
topped the Atlanta Braves by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.
The score was tied at 7 after nine. Boston came out on top in the 11th
inning. Coco Crisp drew a walk. Julio Lugo followed and he stroked a
single. Lugo took second on the throw. Dustin Pedroia then worked the
squeeze play to perfection making Boston victorious to the delight of the the
home town crowd. Boston out-hit Atlanta for the game, 16 hits to 11.
Joel Pineiro(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing
no runs. Bob Wickman(0-3) was given the loss in relief.
The Nationals start off the interleague play schedule with their 2nd straight walk-off win, both wins coming off the bat of Ryan Zimmerman. This time, it was deadlocked at 3 when Cristian Guzman walked with one out in the 9th. Zimmerman was up next and he hit a double to left which would be enough to score Guzman, who also scored the winning run a day earlier against the Braves!

Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had 3 base hits as the Washington Nationals won a
dandy at RFK STADIUM over the Baltimore Orioles, 4 to 3.
Washington scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an
out was recorded, Cristian Guzman drew a walk. Zimmerman followed and he
doubled resulting in an exciting win for Washington and a raucous post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Baltimore had 8 hits in the game while
Washington had 5, but Washington had the more timely hits.
Jon Rauch(1-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Scott
Williamson(1-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and 1 walk
in 1 and 1/3 innings.
The Sox complete the doubleheader sweep of the Tigers by taking the nightcap, 7-3. The Tigers simply gave up too many baserunners, issuing 10 walks and committing 3 errors in addition to the 11 Boston hits. The Sox pitchers were much more efficient, allowing 7 hits but no walks and 10 strikeouts. Curt Schilling gets his 5th win on the year with 7 strong innings. Kevin Youkilis had 3 hits and reached base 5 times while filling in at the 3 hole for David Ortiz, who was given a day off. Youk also showed some power with a 2-run 1st inning homer. Coco Crisp also reached base 5 times - 3 walks, a double and a single. Game 1 hero Eric Hinske got the start on both ends of the doubleheader, but went 0 for 5 in game 2.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Mike Lowell robbed Placido Polanco of a base hit.
Kevin Youkilis touched them all and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox outscored
the Detroit Tigers 7 to 3.
Youkilis helped send the fans home happy. He bombed a two-run dinger (his 4th
of the season) in the 1st inning, smacked a single which plated a run in the
6th inning and slapped a base-hit in the 7th inning. Boston out-hit Detroit
for the game, 11 hits to 7.
The victory went to Curt Schilling(5-2) who went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Chad Durbin(0-4) absorbed the loss. The winning ways continue for Boston.
They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. Detroit has a record of 17-23
after the loss.
It takes a 9th inning comeback, but the Nats prevent the sweep in the final game of a 4 game set with the Braves. This one was knotted at 1 for most of the game until the Braves pushed across a run in the 8th on 3 singles. The Nats would fail to score in the 8th, but would rally in the bottom of the 9th. Tony Batista led off the inning by grounding out, but pinch hittter Dmitri Young got the rally started with a single to right. Since Young is a fat load, I brought in Ryan Langerhans to pinch run. Nook Logan was up next and he would single to move Langerhans to 3rd (and Logan would move to 2nd on the throw to 3rd). Cristian Guzman would pinch hit in the pitchers spot, but would be intentionally walked to load the bases. Felipe Lopez would ground to the pitcher Tyler Yates, and he would rifle a throw home to get to lead runner for the 2nd out. That leaves it up to Ronnie Belliard, but Yates takes the pressure off him by uncorking a wild pitch, allowing the tying run to score. Belliard would then be intentionally walked since first is open, but Ryan Zimmerman would make the Braves pay with a single to score Guzman with the winning run!

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,
Washington Nationals rallied to top Atlanta Braves by the score of 3 to
2.
Washington scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing
3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Dmitri Young began the rally when he
lashed a single. Nook Logan was next and he smacked a single. Logan took
second on the throw. Cristian Guzman then was walked intentionally to load
the bases. One out later, Tyler Yates came up and he let a pitch get away
from him knocking in a run. Ronnie Belliard stepped into the box and was
walked intentionally to load the bases. Ryan Zimmerman added to the outburst
and delivered a one-base hit giving Washington the win and sending the home
town fans into a frenzy. Washington finished with 8 hits in the victory.
Jesus Colome(3-3) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Yates(0-1)
was the loser in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,'
Zimmerman noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just
kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great to see
the crowd go crazy there at the end!'
The Red Sox put up double digits in runs on the Tigers for the 2nd time in this series, this time in game 1 of a doubleheader. Julian Tavarez contributes another solid start for the win - 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K. One run was an Ivan Rodriguez home run to lead off the 7th, a sign that 6 IP was enough for Julian. The Sox had a strange distribution of offense in this one - the top 4 hitters in the order were a combined 0 for 13, while the 5 through 9 hitters were 11 for 20. Eric Hinske was a home run shy of the cycle in a 4 for 4, 3 RBI day; Mike Lowell was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI; and Dougie went deep with a 3 run homer in the 7th. Even with 0-fer days, the big hitters contributed, as Papi and Manny both scored 2 runs. Papi reached on a walk and an error and scored both times, while Manny did it on a walk and an HBP. Kevin Youkilis could have had 4 runs scored in this one and added another 2 to Lowell's RBI total, but he was thrown out twice at home - once from third on what would have been a sac fly, once on a Lowell double where Youk tried to score all the way from first.

Eric Hinske had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit
Tigers by the score of 10 to 5 at Fenway Park.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Hinske. He tripled bringing in two baserunners in the 1st
inning, smacked a single in the 3rd inning, doubled in the 5th inning and
doubled which plated a run in the 8th inning. Boston banged out 11 hits on
the afternoon.
Julian Tavarez(4-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and
allowing 2 runs. Zach Miner(0-1) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 7 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
For the third straight day, the Nats manage just 2 runs in a loss to the Braves. The Braves struck early and often against Levale Speigner, who was making his first start of the year. The Nationals committed 4 errors in this one, 2 by SS Cristian "Bob" Guzman and 2 by 1B Robert Fick.

Curtis Granderson collected 2 extra-base hits and Justin Verlander tossed a
complete game as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score
of 6 to 1 at Fenway Park.
Detroit tallied 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits.

hits in their victory.
The win was credited to Verlander(4-3) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Tim Wakefield(4-2) was charged with the loss.
The Nationals fall to the Braves in a close one in DC. This game seemed to play fast, and the time on the box score seems to support that - a brisk 2:23. The Braves did all their damage in the 2nd, when Andruw Jones led off with a single and advanced to 2nd on an error by pitcher Jason Bergmann. He then advanced to 3rd on a ground out, scored on a Jeff Francoeur single, and Francoeur scored when Scott Thorman cleared the fences. The Nats would get 2 isolated runs in the 4th and 5th, but could never push that tying run across. In fact, the only Nats baserunner after the 5th would be Austin Kearns, who got on the painful way in the 9th when he was hit by a pitch. He was immediately erased on a Ryan Church GIDP that ended the game.

One run was the difference at RFK STADIUM as the Atlanta Braves defeated the
Washington Nationals 3 to 2.
Atlanta delivered all the runs required in the 2nd inning scoring 3 runs using
3 hits. Andruw Jones started the inning off right when he laced a one-base
hit, and an error was also committed. After an out was recorded, Jeff
Francoeur came up and he hit a single knocking in a run. Scott Thorman then
cracked a two-run shot (his 4th of the season). That early scoring held up.
Atlanta and Washington each finished the night with 6 hits.
John Smoltz(4-3) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Peter Moylan
got the save, his 2nd. The losing pitcher was Jason Bergmann(1-4). He
pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 walks.
Atlanta now has a record of 19-19. With the loss, the Washington ballclub's
record is 23-15.
| The Red Sox shellack the Tigers, getting a combined shutout from their pair of Japanese imports. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitches 8 innings of shutout ball, but a high pitch count prevents him from finishing it out. The Red Sox offense was also firing away, with 5 guys with 2 hits or more. The big sluggers came through in the 5th, when the Sox opened up a 1-0 game with a David Ortiz bases loaded sac fly and a Manny Ramirez 3 run homer. Then in the 8th, the Sox hitters piled on 6 more runs off a pathetic Tigers pitching staff. In a one-sided affair the Boston Red Sox batters pounded the Detroit Tigers
pitchers for 11 runs while Daisuke Matsuzaka(5-1), with relief help from
Hideki Okajima, blanked Detroit.
Boston set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run.
That was all Matsuzaka needed. Overall Boston out-hit Detroit 12 to 6.
Nate Robertson(2-3) took the loss. He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings and
surrendered 9 hits and 5 walks.
The Nationals take the rubber game of their 3 game series with the Marlins, earning Jason Simontacchi his first win of the season in the process. Simontacchi did not exactly pitch well, giving up 9 hits and 3 runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Fortunately, the Nats bats were alive to back him up - every starter except for CF Nook Logan got at least one hit, with 15 total for the team. Felipe Lopez went 4 for 5, Christian Guzman went 2 for 4, and Ryan Church went 3 for 5 with a homer.

Left fielder Ryan Church left the yard and had 3 RBI as the Washington
Nationals defeated the Florida Marlins 7 to 3 at RFK STADIUM.
Jason Simontacchi(1-1) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 5 and 2/3
innings surrendering 9 hits and 1 walk. Simontacchi chalked up 7 strikeouts.
Washington had 15 hits overall, while Florida had 11.
Wes Obermueller(1-2) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 5 walks
in 4 and 2/3 innings. With this win, Washington has a division leading 23-14
record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss, the Florida ballclub's
record is 18-19.
The Red Sox sweep the Orioles behind Josh Beckett, who gets his league leading 8th win. This one ended up being a pitching duel of sorts between Beckett and Jason Guthrie, as both pitchers allow just 4 hits over 7 innings a piece. The difference comes in when those hits came - for Guthrie, too many of them came in the 7th inning when the Sox scored 3 runs on 2 walks, a HBP, and 2 singles. Beckett allowed just 1 run over his 7 innings of work.

neither team was able to score again.
Kevin Gregg earned his 3rd save. Matt Chico(6-1) was given the loss. With
this win, Florida has a 18-18 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With this
