| The Red Sox get a dominating pitching performance for the 2nd straight day in a win over the A's. This time it was Josh Beckett, who held the A's hitless through the first 3 innings before allowing a couple hits and a run in the 4th. That was the only blemish in his 7 innings of work, which is good enough for his 6th win of the year thanks to the 2 runs that the Sox scored in the bottom of the 5th when Julio Lugo doubled with Alex Cora on base. A's left fielder Shannon Stewart, who spoiled Curt Schilling's no-hit bid the day before, misplayed Lugo's double and the errant throw resulted in runs for both Cora and Lugo. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon held up the win for Beckett, with Paps scoring his 12th save. |

At Fenway Park, the Boston faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Josh Beckett(6-0) finally bested his Oakland counterpart, Chad
Gaudin(1-4), by the score of 2 to 1.
Boston scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Oakland made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 12th save. Gaudin took the loss. He was
pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 5 and 2/3
innings of work.
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Bob Geren
said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
