The Nationals outlast the Padres, 8-4, in a marathon 18 inning affair at Petco Park. The Nats fought back twice in this one to tie the game, then both teams pitched scoreless ball from the 8th inning all the way until the 18th, when the Nats exploded for 4 runs off Royce Ring. In fact, the Nats pitched 14 scoreless innings to end the ballgame - 2 from starter Shawn Hill after giving up 4 runs in the first 4 innings, 1 inning each from lefties Micah Bowie and Ray King, 3 big innings from Saul Rivera, 4 perfect innings from Ryan Wagner, 2 innings from Jesus Colome, and perhaps most surprising, a 1-2-3 final inning from the beleagured Chad Cordero.

The walk was the downfall of Ring and the Padres in the 18th. Walks to Ryan Church and Chris Snelling sandwiched a Jesus Colome hit and run single to load the bases. Robert Fick then singled to advance the runners a base and push in the go-ahead run, Felipe Lopez was walked to push in run #6, Ronnie Belliard singled to knock in #7, then after a Ryan Zimmerman strikeout, Jesus Flores was walked to push in another runner. Austin Kearns grounded out to end the inning, but the 4 run lead was plenty for Cordero.
