| The Red Sox drop the rubber game of their 3 game series in the Bronx by a 5-4 score. The Sox outhit the Yankees in this one by a 12-8 margin, but the early Yankee attack off Sox starter Julian Tavarez held up for the win. The Sox looked poised for a comeback in the 9th when they started the inning with 4 straight singles off Mariano Rivera and the 3-4-5 hitters due up, but with the tying run on third Ortiz grounded out, Manny struck out, and Eric Hinske grounded out to end the game. |

WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Doug Mientkiewicz robbed Alex Cora of a base hit.
Johnny Damon had 3 base hits as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the Boston Red
Sox by a score of 5 to 4.
New York (AL) started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half
of the first as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. The key at-bat was by
Alex Rodriguez who made the New York (AL) fans a happy lot when he popped a
two-run clout over the fence (his 7th of the season). Boston threatened in
the 9th but New York (AL) was able to put down the rally.
Chien-Ming Wang(2-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Mariano
Rivera gained credit for his 4th save. Julian Tavarez(2-2) was given the
loss. He pitched 5 innings allowing 7 hits and 2 walks.
Terry Francona was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really
hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is
easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely
get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
