| This one looked like it was going to be an easy win for the Phillies, but instead turned into a 10-8 Nationals victory thanks to the Phillies' bullpen. After 6 innings, Phillies starter Cole Hamels was cruising, having allowed just 2 hits and no runs. Meanwhile, the Phillies had managed to score 5 runs off Nats starter Shawn Hill, the big blow being a 3 run Pat Burrell homer in the 5th. The Nats finally got on the board in the 7th with a solo shot from Austin Kearns. Then in the 8th, they finally got to Hamels for 3 straight singles from unlikely sources - Jesus Flores, Chris Snelling, and Josh Wilson. This brought in Fabio Castro from the Phillies bullpen, and Ron Belliard greeted him with a game-tying grand slam over the center field wall. Castro would then walk Ryan Zimmerman and allow a single to Dmitri Young before getting Kearns to fly out for the 2nd out of the inning, but would allow a single to Ryan Church which would load the bases for the 2nd time in the inning. With the light-hitting Mike Restovich up next, I went to the bench and pinch hit with Felipe Lopez, who was enjoying a day off from his usual leadoff role. The Phillies went to their bullpen and Antonio Alfonseca. Lopez hit a double that scored 2 runners to take a 7-5 lead, but Church got thrown out at home for the 3rd out. The Nats would continue the scoring in the 9th, starting out the inning with a Flores double and a Snelling triple. The Phils would go to the bullpen again for Geoff Geary, who would get 2 outs but then allow a 2-run home run to Ryan Zimmerman to make it 10-5, Nats. I decided to give Chad Cordero a 5 run lead to work with, and he allowed 3 runs before getting the 3 outs necessary to preserve the Nats win. |

In a thriller the Washington Nationals staged a dramatic comeback then held on
to win over the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 10 to 8 at Citizen's Bank
Park.
Ronnie Belliard had a good day at the plate. He stroked a single in the 4th
inning and cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 1st of the
season) in the 8th inning. Both teams finished the game with 12 hits.
Levale Speigner(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings.
Fabio Castro(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an
inning and surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks.
