Tim Wakefield is the hard luck loser as the Red Sox fall to the Twins by a 2-0 score. A 4th inning homer by Torii Hunter put both Twins runs on the board, and it would be all the scoring in the game thanks to the combined work of Carlos Silva and Matt Guerrier.

In a game for the baseball purist, Carlos Silva(4-2) and Tim Wakefield(4-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Minnesota Twins finally emerged
victorious over Boston Red Sox, 2 to 0.
In the 4th inning Minnesota scored 2 runs. Joe Mauer got things going when he
delivered a base-hit. Torii Hunter followed and he blasted a two-run home
run (his 7th of the season). After the 4th inning, neither team was able to
score.
Silva was helped out by Matt Guerrier who recorded his 2nd save. Minnesota now
has a record of 15-14. With the loss Boston now has a record of 21-7.
The Nationals get shut down by Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs. Zambrano allows just 3 hits on the day, including a 1st inning Ryan Zimmerman homer that accounts for the Nats only run. Jason Bergmann takes the loss for the Nats.

Carlos Zambrano pitched a 3 hitter as the Chicago (NL) Cubs defeated the
Washington Nationals by the score of 7 to 1 at Wrigley Field.
Chicago (NL) wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they
scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. The early run support proved sufficient for
Zambrano(5-0) and Chicago (NL). That was all the run support Zambrano
required. Chicago (NL) finished with 11 hits in the victory.
Jason Bergmann(0-3) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 7 hits and no walks in
6 innings.
Ichiro Suzuki got the better of his countryman Daisuke Matsuzaka, but in the end it was JD Drew and Chris Reitsma that decided this one in favor of the Red Sox. Ichiro led off the game with a single and would eventually come around to score, then would add a rare display of power with a 2-run homer in the 2nd to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead off Dice-K. The Sox would get 2 of their own in the bottom of the 2nd when Julio Lugo singled with runners on 1st and 2nd, and Mariners LF Raul Ibanez misplayed the ball to allow both runners to score. Then the Sox would take a 5-3 lead in the 3rd on 5 hits, including consecutive 2 out single RBI hits from Jason Varitek, Wily Mo Pena and Dustin Pedroia. The 5-3 lead would hold until the 5th, when Dice-K would load the bases on a single and 2 walks, then allowed a single to Jose Guillen to knock in 2 runs. The 5-5 tie would hold until the 8th when Brendan Donnelly would give up a run in relief on a Guillen single. The Sox would tie it right back in the bottom of the 8th when Coco Crisp singled, stole second, and was knocked in on a Manny Ramirez single. The Mariners would threaten off JC Romero in the 9th by leading off with an Ichiro double and an Adrian Beltre single, but Joel Pineiro would enter and induce a ground ball which would advance Beltre to 2nd, but get the out at 1st without the runner scoring from 3rd. The Sox then intentionally walked Ibanez to load the bases, which worked to perfection when Willie Bloomquist grounded into the 2nd to home to first double play. The Sox would load the bases in the 10th on 3 consecutive singles, but Chris Reitsma would enter with one out and get both Lowell and Varitek to fly out. Reitsma would be less fortunate in the 11th, when Alex Cora would lead off with a single then be advanced to 3rd on a Dustin Pedroia single. JD Drew would come up to the plate and lace a single into the outfield to score Cora and send the fans home happy!

Catcher Jason Varitek had 3 base hits as the Boston Red Sox topped the Seattle
Mariners in 11 innings by a score of 7 to 6 at Fenway Park.
The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Boston won it in the
11th inning. Alex Cora laced a one-base hit. Dustin Pedroia was next and he
doubled. J.D. Drew then banged out a single giving Boston the win much to
the delight of the home town crowd. Boston bats were hot in the 3rd inning
with 3 runs on 5 hits. Boston had 22 hits overall, while Seattle had 14.
The victory went to Joel Pineiro(1-0) who went 3 innings, allowing no runs.
Chris Reitsma(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.
Boston now has a record of a division leading 21-6. With the loss, the
Seattle ballclub's record is 8-15, worst in the division.
Matt Chico, Jon Rauch and Chad Cordero combine on the 4-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over the Padres. Chico's 5th win gives him sole possession of the league lead in that category. Cordero pitches a scoreless final inning for the 2nd straight day, this time earning his 7th save and lowering his ERA to a still horrible 11.57. Chico also helped win the game with his bat, knocking in the only 2 runs of the game with his 2nd inning bases-loaded single.

Matt Chico(5-0) and Clay Hensley(1-3) treated the San Diego fans to a fine
pitching duel at Petco Park. The Washington Nationals eventually emerged as
victors over the San Diego Padres by the score of 2 to 0.
Chico gave a fine effort for Washington. He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks in 7
innings reducing his ERA from 3.54 to 2.83. Neither team managed to score
after the 2nd inning.
Chico got help from Chad Cordero who was credited with his 7th save.
The Red Sox get a dominating pitching performance for the 2nd straight day in a win over the A's. This time it was Josh Beckett, who held the A's hitless through the first 3 innings before allowing a couple hits and a run in the 4th. That was the only blemish in his 7 innings of work, which is good enough for his 6th win of the year thanks to the 2 runs that the Sox scored in the bottom of the 5th when Julio Lugo doubled with Alex Cora on base. A's left fielder Shannon Stewart, who spoiled Curt Schilling's no-hit bid the day before, misplayed Lugo's double and the errant throw resulted in runs for both Cora and Lugo. Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon held up the win for Beckett, with Paps scoring his 12th save.

At Fenway Park, the Boston faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Josh Beckett(6-0) finally bested his Oakland counterpart, Chad
Gaudin(1-4), by the score of 2 to 1.
Boston scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Oakland made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 12th save. Gaudin took the loss. He was
pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 5 and 2/3
innings of work.
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Bob Geren
said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
The Nationals outlast the Padres, 8-4, in a marathon 18 inning affair at Petco Park. The Nats fought back twice in this one to tie the game, then both teams pitched scoreless ball from the 8th inning all the way until the 18th, when the Nats exploded for 4 runs off Royce Ring. In fact, the Nats pitched 14 scoreless innings to end the ballgame - 2 from starter Shawn Hill after giving up 4 runs in the first 4 innings, 1 inning each from lefties Micah Bowie and Ray King, 3 big innings from Saul Rivera, 4 perfect innings from Ryan Wagner, 2 innings from Jesus Colome, and perhaps most surprising, a 1-2-3 final inning from the beleagured Chad Cordero. The walk was the downfall of Ring and the Padres in the 18th. Walks to Ryan Church and Chris Snelling sandwiched a Jesus Colome hit and run single to load the bases. Robert Fick then singled to advance the runners a base and push in the go-ahead run, Felipe Lopez was walked to push in run #6, Ronnie Belliard singled to knock in #7, then after a Ryan Zimmerman strikeout, Jesus Flores was walked to push in another runner. Austin Kearns grounded out to end the inning, but the 4 run lead was plenty for Cordero.

Ryan Wagner came through with a solid 4 innings and first baseman Dmitri Young
collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the Washington Nationals beat
the San Diego Padres in 18 innings by a score of 8 to 4.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Washington came out the victor in the
18th inning. Despite losing, San Diego out-hit Washington 16 to 12.
The victory was credited to Jesus Colome(1-3) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Royce Ring(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.
Curt Schilling takes a no-hitter into the 9th, but ends up allowing a Shannon Stewart double with one out and then walks Mark Ellis before giving way to Jonathan Papelbon. Paps would strike out Eric Chavez for the 2nd out, but then would allow a double to Mike Piazza which would score both runners. Dan Johnson would ground out to end the game. Schilling ends up allowing 2 runs on just one hit and 2 walks. He was perfect until a walk issued to Johnson in the 5th. The Red Sox were fortunate to get 2 insurance runs in the 8th or else this one would have gone down as a loss. In a testament to the realism of Strat, Curt Schilling took a no-hitter into the 9th during the real 2007 season. It was against the A's, and the no-no was broken up by Shannon Stewart. The differences are that there were 2 out when Stewart got the hit, the game was in Oakland, and Schilling would go on to throw the complete game one hitter. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/OAK/OAK200706070.shtml

Coco Crisp had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Curt Schilling took a no-hitter into
the 9th inning as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics 3 to 2 at
Fenway Park.
Schilling(2-2) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 1 hit
and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. The right-handed Schilling had his no-hit
bid broken up by Shannon Stewart who doubled with one out in the 9th inning.
Oakland had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 11th. Joe Blanton(3-2) was the losing
pitcher. He surrendered 8 hits and no walks in 7 innings.
League standings as of the end of April. Including leaders, there are 17 teams within 2.5 games of their respective division lead. There are ties atop the AL East, AL Central, and NL East while both the AL West and NL East have a team just a half game back. I continue to lack any explanation whatsoever for the Orioles hot start.

A surprise pitchers duel goes scoreless until the 9th, when the Nationals manage to push a run across that would prove to be enough for the win. The surprise was not Jake Peavy, who is one of the best pitchers in the NL, but Nats starter John Patterson who has been downright terrible at times this year. Patterson held the Padres hitless until Brian Giles led off the 6th with a single. Meanwhile, a 2nd inning Dmitri Young single was the Nats' only hit off Peavy until the 8th. Both teams were still getting on base, as each starter issued 5 walks over the first 7 innings. Termel Sledge would lead off the 8th with a single, but get picked off before Patterson issued his 6th walk of the game, to Brian Giles. With Patterson well over 100 pitches and a lefty due up, I went to Ray King out of the bullpen. Giles would be caught stealing, then King would get Adrian Gonzalez to line out to end the inning. In the 9th, Dmitri Young would lead off with a walk off Peavy. Now Young is fat and slow, so I bring in Josh Wilson to pinch run. Austin Kearns singles to send Wilson to 3rd. With Peavy at 136 pitches, the Padres go to the bullpen and Doug Brocial. Brocail induces a fly out from Ryan Church, and maybe it's deep enough to score the runner. Wilson tries to score but gets thrown out at home! So now it's 2 out with Kearns on 2nd. The Padres intentionally walk Brian Schneider, which brings up Kory Casto. Now Casto has 32 AB so far this season and has yet to get a hit. Still, he's left handed and my bench is terrible, so I play the matchups. Casto hits a deep ground ball to the left side of the infield and SS Khalil Green cannot make the throw in time...it's an infield single and the bases are now loaded! I pinch hit for the pitcher's spot with Chris Snelling, and he singles to push Kearns in with the go-ahead run. Felipe Lopez would pop out to end the inning, but Jon Rauch would come in to pitch the 9th and get the 3 outs and the save.

John Patterson carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Petco Park as the
Washington Nationals beat the San Diego Padres by the count of 1 to
0.
Washington won the game with a run in the top of the 9th inning. Dmitri Young
drew a walk. Austin Kearns stepped up to the plate and he delivered a
one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Brian Schneider came up and he was
walked intentionally. Kory Casto came up and he lashed a single to load the
bases. Chris Snelling stepped into the box and banged out a base-hit scoring
the run. Washington had only 5 hits for the game.
The win went to Ray King(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning. The
right-handed Patterson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Brian Giles
singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Jon Rauch recorded the save, his
2nd. Jake Peavy(4-2) absorbed the loss.
The Mets win the finale of a 3 game series to prevent a sweep at the hands of the Nationals. Mets starter John Maine was shaky early in this one, but went on to strike out 12 over his 7 innings of work. The first inning was the only one in which the Nats could score on him, tallying 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk that were interspersed with Maine striking out 3. In fact, the first 7 outs that Maine recorded were strikeouts! Meanwhile the Mets scored 6 runs in 4 separate innings off Nats starter Jason Bergmann. The Nats scored in the 8th and 9th to pull within a run and even got the tying run to 3rd thanks to a Ryan Church single, but Chris Snelling grounded out to end the game. I wish I had a decent right handed bat on the bench! Kudos to Nats reliever Levale Speigner, who entered the game in the 5th and went on to pitch 3 1/2 innings of shutout ball.

John Maine dominated striking out 12 Washington batters and Shawn Green hit a
homerun at RFK STADIUM as the New York (NL) Mets beat the Washington
Nationals by the count of 6 to 5.
Maine(4-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for New York (NL). He went
7 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 walks. Washington threatened in the 9th but
New York (NL) was able to put down the rally.
Maine was helped out by Billy Wagner who recorded his 8th save. Jason
Bergmann(0-2) suffered the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs
in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Maine, when asked about his 12 strikeout performance noted, 'The important
thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team?
But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'
