| It takes 12 innings, but the 2007 Red Sox start out on a winning note with a 4-3 win in Kansas City. The Royals had a 3-0 lead after 6, scoring 3 runs off Curt Schilling including 2 off solo homers. Meanwhile, Royals starter Gil Meche was handling the Sox pretty easily, striking out 6 through 6. In the 7th the Sox got 2 hits off Meche with none out, which made the Royals go to Joakim Soira out of the bullpen. Soira would allow a run to score on a Youkilis sac fly, then would walk both Papi and Manny but would get JD Drew to pop out to end the inning. In the 8th, Soira would walk Jason Varitek with one out and give way to Jimmy Gobble. Gobble would allow a double to Coco Crisp and commit a wild pitch to allow a run to score, which would bring Octavio Dotel out of the Royals bullpen. Dotel would uncork a wild pitch as well and allow the Sox to tie the game. The 3-3 tie would hold until the 12th, when 3 walks and an error by catcher John Buck would allow the Sox to score the go-ahead run without the benefit of a hit. Enter Jonathan Papelbon, and it's good night Royals. |
