The Red Sox are dealt their second loss of the year by their division rivals. This one was pretty much all Yankees and Andy Pettitte, but the Red Sox took advantage of consecutive Yankee errors in the 9th to get 2 runners on. Those runners would score on a 3 run Manny Ramirez homer, but Mariano Rivera would enter the game and get JD Drew to ground out for the 3rd out.

Johnny Damon hit 2 doubles and Andy Pettitte came through with a solid 8 and
two third innings as the New York (AL) Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox by
the score of 5 to 3 at Fenway Park.
Pettitte(4-0) dominated Boston hitters. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits
and 1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA to 1.93. New York (AL)
finished with 10 hits while Boston ended up with 4.
Mariano Rivera earned his 3rd save. Curt Schilling(1-2) was the loser. He
allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Best summary of this one comes from the in-game play by play, which said "Washington can't seem to do anything right!" during the 9th inning when Jesus Colome uncorked a wild pitch. The damage had been done long before that, mostly by Pat Burrell who had 3 homers on the day, although they were all solo shots. Crafty veteran Jamie Moyer pitched a hell of a game, going the distance and allowing just 4 hits and one run.

WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Jesus Colome robbed Aaron Rowand of a base hit.
Left fielder Pat Burrell ripped 3 homeruns and Jamie Moyer went 9 strong
innings as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Washington Nationals by a
score of 8 to 1 at RFK STADIUM.
Burrell had a big day at the plate. He delivered a solo blast in the 3rd
inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 7th inning and cracked a solo homerun
(his 4th of the season) in the 9th inning. Offensively, Philadelphia was a
juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Moyer(1-2) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. John Patterson(0-3)
took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 5
innings.
'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Burrell said. 'That's
it'
The Red Sox extend their winning streak to 8 games with a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays, which completes the sweep in Toronto. The Red Sox started the game off right, scoring twice in the first inning off Jays starter Roy Halladay. The Jays would also start the game out strong with a leadoff home run from Alexis Rios, but that would end up being the only run that Sox starter Julian Tavarez would allow over his 6 innings of work. The Sox would add 3 more runs to eventually take a 5-1 lead, and Joel Pineiro and Brendan Donnelly would hold down that lead for the win. Donnelly earns his first save of the season in place of Jonathan Papelbon, who has been overworked thanks to all the save opportunities so far this season. The Sox also continued their speedster ways, with 3 stolen bases in this game. Look at the box score to see who got in on the fun!

In a close game the sizzling Boston Red Sox got by the Toronto Blue Jays by
the score of 5 to 3.
Julian Tavarez(2-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Boston. He
allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings lowering his ERA to 3.75. Toronto
had 9 hits in the game while Boston had 6, but Boston had the more timely
hits.
Tavarez was helped out by Brendan Donnelly who recorded his 1st save. Roy
Halladay(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 8 innings giving up 6 hits
and 2 walks.
The Phillies come to town and take game 1 of a brief 2-game series with the Nationals. The Nationals came back twice in this game, once to tie it at 1 and then again to tie it at 3. They took a 4-3 lead after that on a Ryan Church solo homer, but Levale Speigner would load the bases in the top of the 7th and 2 runs would score when Felipe Lopez misplayed a ground ball that would have been the 3rd out. The Phillies would add one more in the 8th and would hold the 2-run lead for the win.

In a close game the Philadelphia Phillies got by the Washington Nationals by
the score of 6 to 4.
Philadelphia tallied 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning. Philadelphia banged
out 9 hits on the night. Adam Eaton(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 4
runs in 6 innings. Tom Gordon earned the save, his 1st. Levale Speigner(1-1)
was hit with the loss in relief. Philadelphia scored big getting 3 runs off
him in 2 innings.
The Philadelphia ballclub's record now stands at 6-7. Washington has a record
of 9-6 after the loss.
The Red Sox continue their winning ways, going to 12-1 on the season with a 6-3 win over Toronto. Julio Lugo finally showed why the Red Sox invested in him by reaching base 4 times, and Coco Crisp went 4 for 5. Perhaps most surprisingly for the Red Sox is that both of them had a stolen base! JC Romero entered the game in the 8th for the Sox, but his trademark wildness led to 3 walks, a double, and 2 runs. Brendan Donnelly got the last out in the 8th, then Dougie went deep to get 2 back and give Jonathan Papelbon a 3-run lead to preserve with his 9th save.

Catcher Doug Mirabelli hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI at Rogers Centre
where the sizzling Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of
6 to 3.
Tim Wakefield(2-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 6 innings
surrendering 7 hits and 5 walks. Boston out-hit Toronto for the game, 14
hits to 9.
Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 9th save. Tomo Ohka(0-2) was given
the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 4 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Dice-K? More like Dice-10K, as Daisuke Matsuzaka dazzles while striking out 10 Blue Jay hitters over 7 innings. Actually, 10 is sort of a disappointment after Daisuke struck out 6 batters through 2 innings, AKA all of them. The Sox offense all came off the long ball from a couple unlikely sources: Coco Crisp with a 1st inning solo shot, and Dustin Pedroia with a grand slam in the 6th. Jonathan Papelbon struck out the side in the 9th for his 8th save.

Center fielder Coco Crisp hit a homerun and Daisuke Matsuzaka reeled off a
total of 10 strikeouts at Rogers Centre as the Boston Red Sox beat the
Toronto Blue Jays by the count of 5 to 2.
Matsuzaka(2-0) looked very much in control throughout the night. He
surrendered only 3 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings improving his ERA from 4.50
to 2.84. Overall Boston out-hit Toronto 9 to 3.
Jonathan Papelbon recorded the save, his 8th. Gustavo Chacin(1-2) was tagged
with the loss. Matsuzaka was humble when questioned about his performance,
'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I had great
support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely
well called game!'
It wasn't exactly pretty at the end, but the Nationals hold on to hand the Braves a 6-3 loss and break their 4 game losing streak. The Nationals got 3 hits in the 1st to put 2 runs on the board, and would hold on to the lead for the entire game. Austin Kearns was the offensive star of the game with a 3 for 4, 3 RBI performance that left him a triple short of the cycle. The Nats bullpen was once again a little shaky in this one. After 6 innings of solid work from Matt Chico, the Nats went to Ryan Wagner with the 3 run lead. Wagner allowed a leadoff single, then followed a strikeout with a HBP and another single. Yet with the bases loaded, he induced 2 fly ball outs to end the inning and went on to pitch a perfect 8th. Jesus Colome then started the 9th with a 5 run lead. He immediately allowed a solo homer to Brian McCann, which was followed by a single, popout, single, and wild pitch. With the tying runner on deck I brought in closer Chad Cordero, who allowed a single to let another runner across but then got the 2 needed outs to seal the win.

At RFK STADIUM the Washington Nationals outscored the Atlanta Braves 6 to
3.
Washington claimed the early lead in the first inning with 2 runs utilizing 3
base hits. After an out was recorded, Ronnie Belliard began the Washington
spurt when he doubled. Ryan Zimmerman followed and he banged out a single
which scored a run. Zimmerman took second on the throw. One out later,
Austin Kearns came up and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning.
Atlanta had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The victory went to Matt Chico(3-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Chico
got help from Chad Cordero who was credited with his 5th save. Chuck
James(1-1) was the loser.
'Some losses are harder to take than others' Bobby Cox lamented after the
game. 'This was one of them.'
The Red Sox are victorious over the Angels in their annual Patriots Day game. This one was all Josh Beckett, as he scatters 8 hits over 8 shutout innings. Brendan Donnelly pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the shutout. Big Papi provides the offensive pop for the Sox with his 4th homer of the season, a 3-run shot in the 3rd inning. The Sox would add 2 more in the 5th thanks to a bases loaded single from Jason Varitek.

Josh Beckett(3-0), with relief help from Brendan Donnelly, blanked Los
Angeles(AL) while the Boston Red Sox scored 5 runs in a day game at Fenway
Park.
Beckett gave a fine effort for Boston. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in 8
innings lowering his ERA to 1.17. Both teams totaled 8 hits on the
afternoon.
Ervin Santana(0-3) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 5 runs in 4 and 2/3
innings of work.
A day after a wild 17-14 Mets win, the Nats and Mets settle in for a good old fashioned pitcher's duel. Nats starter Shawn Hill pitches 6 shutout innings, but leaves the game in the 7th in favor of a pinch hitter when the Nats had runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs in a scoreless game. That pinch hitter (Robert Fick) would walk, but the Nats would fail to score and the Mets would get a run off a Ryan Zimmerman error in the bottom of the 7th. The Nats would strike back in the top of the 9th with a leadoff single from Ryan Church, a pinch hit double from Josh Wilson, and finally a wild pitch from Mets closer Billy Wagner. The teams would hold each other scoreless until the bottom of the 12th, when pinch hitter Damion Easley would greet Chad Cordero with a fences-clearing shot for the win.

56,388 fans were treated to a fine game at Shea Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The New York (NL) Mets won by the
slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. New York (NL) won it in
the 12th inning. Damion Easley lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 1st of
the season) making New York (NL) the winners and sending the 56,388 fans home
happy. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
Ambiorix Burgos(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and
allowing no runs. Chad Cordero(0-1) took the loss in relief.
The Red Sox bullpen proves to be an adventure once again, but the Sox still come away with the 6-5 win over the Angels. It takes 4 men to get 3 outs in the 8th, and they allow 4 runs and allow the tying run to get to 3rd in the process. Curt Schilling started the inning by striking out Macier Izturis, but then allowed a home run to Gary Matthews Jr. to make it a 6-2 game. With 2 big right handed hitters due up in Orlando Cabrera and Vlad Guerrero, I went to the bullpen and Kyle Snyder. Snyder allowed singles to both of them, followed by a walk to load the bases. Enter Joel Pineiro, who induced a ground ball for a fielder's choice out with an RBI, but then he allowed a triple to Casey Kotchman to make it a one run game. Enter Mike Timlin, who finally got the third out and then gave way to Jonathan Papelbon for the 9th, who earned his 7th save on the season. How did the Red Sox score their 6 runs, you might ask? They got a Dustin Pedroia solo homer in the 3rd, then Pedroia started off a 5 run attack in the 5th with a single. That was followed by a Julio Lugo single, an Eric Hinske RBI double, a 2 RBI David Ortiz single and finally a 2-run Manny Ramirez homer.

WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: Jose Molina blocked the plate, saving a run!
36,840 fans watched an exciting game at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox
scored 5 runs in the 5th inning and topped the Los Angeles(AL) Angels by the
slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
Los Angeles(AL) was unable to claim the lead after Boston went ahead in the
3rd inning plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. Los Angeles(AL)
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.
Curt Schilling(1-1) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 7th save. Hector Carrasco(0-1) ended
up with the loss. He pitched 4 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits and 3
walks.
...not exactly a pitcher's duel in this one. John Patterson and Mike Pelfrey lock up in a battle to see who can suck more. Patterson is the "winner" of that battle, since he was knocked out of the game before the 2nd inning is over and was charged with 9 runs, 6 earned. Pelfrey lasted longer, but allowed 9 runs (all earned) off 10 hits and 7 walks. So, to tally: 31 total runs 36 total hits 14 walks 5 errors The lone bright spot for the Nats is that they lost by only 3 runs after being down 15-6 after just 3 innings. Jesus Colome also was a highlight, entering the game with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 7th with just one out and getting both outs as well as 3 more in the 8th without allowing a baserunner. Saul Rivera was terrible in his 2007 debut - he allowed 3 hits and 2 walks without retiring a batter, and all 5 runs went on to score.

WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Carlos Beltran robbed Austin Kearns of a Homerun!
Left fielder Moises Alou had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the New York (NL) Mets
defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 17 to 14 at Shea
Stadium.
The New York (NL) fans enjoyed the offense provided by Alou. He smacked a
three-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the 1st inning, doubled scoring
two baserunners in the 3rd inning, hit a single in the 5th inning and smacked
a one-base hit in the 7th inning. New York (NL) bats were hot in the 1st
inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 4 hits and the 3rd inning with 6 runs
on 4 hits. Washington scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky
pitching kept them from victory.
Mike Pelfrey(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing
9 runs. John Patterson(0-2) was the losing pitcher.
A couple of weird pitching lines in this one. Angels starter John Lackey takes the complete game loss, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk, but also allowing 4 runs with none of them earned. Fielding miscues were the downfall of the Angels in this one - the Red Sox had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out in the 2nd when consecutive errors by Lackey and by RF Vlad Guerrero allowed 2 runs to score. In the 8th, a 2-out error by old friend Orlando Cabrera allowed David Ortiz to reach base, and Manny made it count with a 2-run blast to put the Sox ahead. For the Red Sox, Tim Wakefield pitched 7 shutout innings but allowed 8 hits over those 7 innings. He started the 8th but allowed 2 singles without recording an out, which brought in JC Romero for one out and then Brendan Donnelly for 2 more. Unfortunately, Doug Mirabelli would make a throwing error on a steal of 3rd which allowed one run to score, then Donnelly would uncork a wild pitch to allow a 2nd run to score. Both runs would be charged to Wake and cost him the win, which Donnelly would get credit for after Manny's homer. Papelbon allowed a lone double amongst 3 K's to get his 6th save.

In a tight game it was the Boston Red Sox 4, the Los Angeles(AL) Angels 2 at
Fenway Park.
Brendan Donnelly(1-0) pitched in relief and was credited with the victory. He
went 2/3 of an inning allowing 1 hit and no walks improving his ERA from 3.00
to 2.45. Despite losing, Los Angeles(AL) out-hit Boston 12 to 4.
Jonathan Papelbon got the save, his 6th. John Lackey(2-1) was charged with
the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in
his 8 innings of work.
The Braves break the Nats' 7-game winning streak in a 16-inning game that never should have been close. The Nationals got 3 runs in the first and held on to that lead as the Braves chipped away with a run in the 5th and 6th and finally tied it in the bottom of the 9th. The Nationals were lucky that they only gave up 3 runs through 9, since during that span they walked 10, had a balk, a wild pitch, and hit a batter. The Braves left 15 batters on during the first 9 innings! The Nats bullpen held the lead until the 15th when the Nats bats finally struck for 2 runs on a single by pitcher Jesus Colome. The game was left in Colome's hands since he was the last man standing in the bullpen, and he allowed the Braves to get 2 right back off 4 hits in the bottom of the 15th and allowed 3 hits without recording an out in the bottom of the 16th for the mercy killing. An interesting note - although the Braves got a run in the 5th and the 6th, they still had rallies killed in both innings by fly balls caught against the wall by Nats left fielder Kory Casto. It's a good thing Casto is good with the glove, because his 0 for 6 performance with the bat makes him 0 for 26 on the season. He has one walk for an anemic .037 OBP.

WEB GEMS- Bot 15th: Jesus Flores blocked the plate, saving a run!
46,846 fans were treated to a fine game at Turner Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Atlanta Braves won by the
slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Atlanta was victorious in the 16th
inning. Ryan Langerhans delivered a one-base hit. Kyle Davies next to the
plate and he lined a base-hit. Kelly Johnson then hit a single making
Atlanta the winners and sending the 46,846 fans home happy. Atlanta provided
plenty of action in the 15th inning which saw them plate 2 runs on 4 hits.
Washington was out-hit by Atlanta, 20 hits to 15.
The winning pitcher was Rafael Soriano(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Jesus Colome(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs in
2 innings of work.
The Red Sox are the comeback kids in this one, coming back first from a 3-0 deficit and then winning the game in the bottom of the 9th after being down by a run. Daisuke Matsuzaka was ok in his first home start, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs. In the battle of Japanese superstars, Ichiro went 0 for 3 against Dice-K, although he did reach base in the 6th on a fielders choice. He was erased from the basepaths when he was caught stealing. The Mariners broke a 3-3 tie in the 8th with a Jose Guillen triple and a Kenji Johjima sac fly off Brendan Donnelly. The Sox failed to score in the bottom of the 8th but got a leadoff single in the 9th from Wily Mo Pena. Mike Lowell hit a deep fly to left that was caught, but then Jason Varitek hit a fly so deep that only a fan would be able to catch it. It is Varitek's 3rd homer of the season so far. The Mariners are the only winless team in the majors at 0-5, although they (and the Indians) have played 3 less games than everyone else due to a series that was wiped out by snow in Cleveland.

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,
Boston Red Sox rallied to top Seattle Mariners by the score of 5 to
4.
Boston won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs utilizing 2 base hits. Wily Mo Pena got things going when he lined a
base-hit. After an out was recorded, Jason Varitek stepped up to the plate
and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 3rd of the season) making Boston
victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Boston won despite
being out-hit by Seattle 11 hits to 8.
Mike Timlin(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. J.J.
Putz(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'What a win!', Timlin said.
'These are the kind of games that stand out in your mind at the end of a
season.'
